Math
Our classroom just wrapped up Unit 9 this week. This unit focusd on the links among fractions, decimals and percents for numbers. We began by practicing how to convert a fraction to a decimal and then to a percent. Some common fractions were memorized (for example is 0.5 or 50%.) Finally we introduced multiplication and division of decimals for the last few lessons of Unit 9. As we are entering the last full month of school, it is really important to keep practicing your childs math facts. We will be doing timings until the end of the month!
Science
In science, our class started a unit called Organisms in the Environment. We started out by building a terrarium with dirt, grass, moss, and a fern. The students then added small critters they found on the playground during recess time. We are calling this our Schoolyard Habitat. We have worms, flies, beetles and other lovely creatures. We are starting to observe this habitat every day and collect data about the water, temperature, soil and sun conditions. We also have an aquarium tank and welcomed guppies, African Dwarf Frogs, and snails to the tank. We will be learning more about these animals next week. We will also be attending an IMAX movie called Born to Be Wild which will be supporting our science unit. Stop by and see our new friends!
Mystery Unit
In reading, our class has begun a mystery unit. We have discussed different vocabulary words related to mysteries including my favorite vocabulary word, red herring. Red herrings in a mystery is a tool an author uses to distract and mislead the reader. We have read some short mysteries and practiced some important reading skills. We practiced inferring when we read A Viking in the Basement. We also worked on questioning when reading a Mystery from History book called The Mary Celeste by Jane Yolen. We also practiced finding a literary device called allusions when we read Tough Cookie by David Wisniewski. The class loved hunting for the different allusions in the text!
