Teaching Experience
Internship #2 (March April 2015): Harkins Middle School
During my second internship, I did my practice teaching at Harkins Middle
School in Miramichi, New Brunswick. The grades that I had the pleasure of teaching
were grades 7 and 8 Language Arts. With my grade 7 classes, we conducted a unit
on Poetry, and for many of these students, it was their first foray into writing
poetry, which I found rather fascinating. We also did a discussion based novel
study, which enhanced their critical thinking skills. With my grade 8 classes, we did
a unit on Short Stories, as well as a discussion based novel study. All of my classes
were based upon the reading and writing workshop models, which allowed me to
help many students on a one on one basis. I also had the privilege to work with
several EAs and an Intervention Worker, as we had many students in the class on
modified plans giving me a great chance to work with students who had
exceptionalities. During this internship, I also attended the Anglophone North
Branch meeting, and two personal development sessions dealing with the school
mission and vision plan and addiction awareness. As far as extra-curricular
activities, I was able to be a judge for two students attending a poetry competition,
and I attended a few CHAT meetings.
