Dear Parents,

Its hard to believe that summer is over and we are ready to begin our 2015-2016
school year. There are many exciting & important things happening at Parkwood,
and we both know how much you want to know about them. We have seven (7)
things we would like to communicate to you before we begin.
First, we are going to have our regular Meet and Greet for you and your child(ren)
to drop off their school supplies and meet the teacher next week. Please notice the
different days to meet the teachers.

Primary Grades K-3 may come on Thursday, August 13th from 3:30-5:30.
Intermediate Grades 4-6 may come on Friday, August 14th, from 3:30-5:30.

Second, because research shows that the school-parent communication is essential

for academic success, we are inviting you to attend a MANDATORY Curriculum
Night and Open House on Wednesday, August 26th. This will be different from all
of the opening nights that weve had in the past. There will be Community Partners
in the cafeteria during the evening to share their business samples with you. There
will be free childcare while you attend both the meeting with the principal and your
classroom teachers presentations. You will be learning vital information that
concerns both you and your student at the meetings. Mrs. Arroyo, our principal, will
be repeating the information three different times. The teachers will also repeat
their information three different times. Please choose which times will work the best
for you and your family. You MUST attend at least 1 of each session. There will also
be raffle tickets given for each session that you attend. When the two (or three)
tickets are turned in, your family will be registered to win the raffle prize. The raffle
tickets will be chosen Thursday morning during school, and the prize will be sent
home with the winning family that day. The schedule for Wednesday Night the 26 th
will be:

Third, You will be hearing a lot about GRIT this year from the students. GRIT is an
acronym that means:
G Give It Your All, R Redo If Necessary, I Ignore Giving Up, T Take Time to Do
It Right
This will be our academic and social focus this year. To help us with this, Hanover
Township and Crossroads are going to work together with our community and offer a
program to 60 of our students in Grades 4-6. This program will be offered each
Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoon from
2:30 6:00 p.m. for the entire year. The program will be student driven and will
include Homework Support, STEM Discovery, Restorative Justice strategies,
Technology training, Field Trips and will also partner with Poplar Creek Library; all to
help our students become more successful in school and in life. There will be an
application process which will require strict attendance policies for both students
and sometimes parents. This information will be sent home as soon as possible.
Fourth, Did you know that if youre a parent, youre already a member of our
Parkwood PTO?
PTO stands for Parent Teacher Organization. Currently, we
are looking for interested and excited parents to become a part of our Parkwood
PTO team. There are board members needed to create the team for this year. The
goals/purposes of our PTO are to: bring into closer relations the home and the
school so that parents and teachers may cooperate in the education of the child
and assist Parkwood Elementary School in organizing and maintaining practical
programs to enrich our childrens learning process. PTO is largely responsible for
communication and support that we all need between the parents and staff of our
school. PTO organizes fund-raising, keeps financial records for District auditing,
plans programs to enrich student learning and experience, and collaborates with
teachers. Please consider becoming a part of this extremely important and
necessary team of our school. You can let Mrs. Arroyo know, as soon as possible,
that you are willing to help in some way with your schools PTO.
Fifth, HOMEWORK is always a concern each year. Please check the Parent
Handbook for our Parkwood Homework Expectations. Every student K-6 is expected
to have and complete homework every day.
Sixth, Parent Teacher Conferences will be held at the beginning of Thanksgiving
week this year. The expectation is that EVERY STUDENT will have a conference at
that time. These conferences will be led by the students. They will be sharing their
ideas, their daily work, special projects, and academic goals for the year. Please
plan to attend and be ready to be impressed by how well your child is doing in
school.
Seventh, PICK-UP and DROP-OFF this year will look a lot like last year. CARS ARE
ALWAYS TO DRIVE TO THE FRONT DOOR #1 TO DROP OFF STUDENTS, while those

who walk may come in Door #1 or Door #7. PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE
INTO THE BACK PARKING LOT. This is for the safety of the children and for your
convenience. Please always park and/or drop off in the front of the building.
We are excited and anticipating our best year ever. We are looking forward to
partnering with you and with our community in many ways to help our students be
even more successful than ever before. Thank you for your trust and help to make
Parkwood a school where the students, staff, parents and community truly care for
one another.
