OTSEGO ELEMENTARY EXTRA

September 4, 2015
Our Students, Our Community, Our Success
D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)
Program Begins
4 DAY ROTATION SCHEDULE
We have Black, Orange, White and Gray days at
Otsego Elementary. No, its not the weather or the
mood of the principal, but our rotating schedule.
Due to the success of the 4 Day Rotation Schedule
last year, we are continuing the format this year.
Rotating the schedule allows us consistent
intervention/enrichment time with students as well
as teacher team collaboration. If this is new to you,
be assured that the kids tend to remember the
schedule better than the adults! Additionally, the
year long rotation schedule is available on the
website and attached with this newsletter. If you
would like your child to keep an extra pair of tennis
shoes at school, that is perfectly fine as K-2 students
each have a cubbie in their class and 3-5 students
have a locker for storage.

STANDARDS BASED
GRADING
As your child begins to bring home graded papers
you will see a numbered marking system used in
grades K-5. Students are marked on how well they
are progressing on the standards as follows:
4 Consistently demonstrates mastery of the standard
3 Approaching mastery of the standard
2 Partial achievement of the standard
1 Not meeting the standard
Grading this way provides parents greater feedback
on how your child is doing based upon the standards
at each grade level. Student grades and report
cards will be available to you through online Power
School. Letters went home with students last week
with parent user name and password.

Deputy Brian Ruckstuhl, our Resource Officer, met with

all fifth grade classes this week to begin the D.A.R.E.
program. Many staff members throughout our building
helped kick-off the 5th grade program by sporting their
DARE T-shirts. During the next 12 weeks, students will
spend approximately one hour each week focusing on
decision making, handling risky situations, responding to
peer pressure, signs of stress, bullying and
communicating effectively.

SCHOOL PICTURES
School pictures have already arrived and were sent
home with students this week. If you had pictures taken
but forgot to order, you will receive a proof of your
students picture with information on how to order.
Those who could not attend Back to School Days will
have pictures taken on September 21. This is retake day
for the district. Also, we needed to wait on all students
for a class picture. Hence, those will be sent later.

GRANDPARENT DAY
We will be celebrating Grandparents/Special Persons
Day at Otsego Elementary School on Wednesday,
September 16th. This year we will be holding an Open
House event at the elementary school from 5:00 6:00
p.m. Come see your grandchilds classroom, tour the
school, and see the playground! No RSVP needed.

Important Dates

If you are new to the district and are looking for weekly spelling
lists, you wont find them. However, spelling instruction for
OES is still happening in OES classrooms. We now know that
providing a spelling list on a Monday, practicing through the
week (often by copying words or using in sentences) and then
taking a test on Friday is not best practice. Instead, teachers are
using research-based, best practices in a variety of ways. They
guide students through studying how words sound, patterns
and structures and then immediately apply that during reading
and writing. When embedded into daily work, spelling will
become meaningful and not an isolated skill. Spelling
instruction is included in the Common Core Standards and
therefore happening in our classrooms. So when you dont find
those lists, know students are receiving spelling instruction
every day in classrooms.

Otsego now has a new online payment program appropriately
called, K12PaymentCenter. As of now, the only things you will
be able to do are pay for school lunches and see what your
children are buying at school. We will be adding school fees and
other items in the future. We will let everyone know when this
becomes available. A letter with details for access will be sent
home today. Additionally, Ive attached the same information to
this newsletter.

4TH AND GRADE BASKETBALL OPEN GYM

Thursday nights from 6 to 8 pm there will be an Open Gym at
the Otsego Elementary Gym beginning September 10th.
This is a chance for any 4th grade boys interested in basketball to
come out and get experience playing full court
basketball. Additionally, there is a 4th grade league that will begin
at a later date. For more information please contact
