This document contains 3 questions and solutions regarding flow measurement devices: 1) Rotameters operate based on variable area principle where a float raises in a tapered tube based on fluid flow. They are more accurate and reliable than other flowmeters while also having low cost and head loss. 2) Given parameters of a Venturi meter, the volume flow rate of water is calculated to be 2.349 x 10-3 m3/s and average velocity is 1.196 m/s. 3) Given parameters of a flow nozzle, the volume flow rate is 0.00172 m3/s, average velocity is 2.43 m/s, and head loss is 0.306m.

1. What is the operating principle of variable-area flowmeters (rotameters)? How do they

compare to other types of flowmeters with respect to cost, head loss, and reliability?
In rotameters, there are five primary elements: The metering tube, float, scale, Process
connections (end fittings), and Body/Housing. Its operation is based on the variable area
principle where the flow raises a float in a tapered tube, which increases the area for passage
of the fluid flow. When the gravitational force equals the force exerted by the flowing fluid
and buoyance, the float is in a stable position. The rotameter has a higher accuracy than
other flowmeters, so it is more reliable. It is a well-known cost effective solution for flow
measurement of liquids and gases. The pressure drop across the float is low and remains
essentially constant so the head loss is lower as compared to other flowmeters.
2. A Venturi meter equipped with a differential pressure gage is used to measure the flow
rate of water at 15C (=999.1 kg/m3) through a 5-cm-diameter horizontal pipe. The
diameter of the Venturi neck is 3 cm, and the measured pressure drop is 5 kPa. Taking the
discharge coefficient to be 0.98, determine the volume flow rate of water and the average
velocity through the pipe.

3. A flow nozzle equipped with a differential pressure gage is used to measure the flow rate
of water at 10C ( =999.7 kg/m3 and =1.307 x 10-3 kg/m s) through a 3-cm-diameter
horizontal pipe. The nozzle exit diameter is 1.5 cm, and the measured pressure drop is 3
kPa. Determine the volume flow rate of water, the average velocity through the pipe, and
the head loss.
