E439 - Mathematical Modelling & Analysis II Tutorial Sheet A1 - Multiple Integrals

This document provides the questions and problems for a tutorial on multiple integrals. It includes 7 practice problems involving calculating volumes, moments of area, masses, and centers of gravity using double and triple integrals over various regions. The tutorial is scheduled for Tuesday October 18th at 11am, with a test on Thursday October 20th at 12pm. Students are instructed to attempt all questions.

Tutorial Sheet A1 - Multiple Integrals

ALL QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ATTEMTED. Tutorial on Tuesday 18th October

at 11am. Test on Thursday 20th at 12:00.
1.

Write

f( x, y) dA in the form

dx f dy, where :

(i)

A = rectangle with vertices (1, 0), (3, 0), (1, 4), (3, 4):

(ii)

A = parallelogram with vertices (1, 0), (3, 0), (3, 4), (5, 4);

(iii)

A = circle, centre (1, 1) and radius 1;

(iv)

A = area between y2 = 4x and x = y+1.

(NB There is nothing to actually integrate in this question. )

2.

The velocity distribution in a pipe with (equilateral) triangular cross

section is given by:

- dp/dz a 3
V(x,y) =
y - 2 (3x2 - y2)

2 3a
where a is the side of the triangle as shown in the diagram below:

x
a

is the fluid viscosity and p is the pressure. By evaluating a double

integral show that the volume flow rate through this pipe is given by:

Q=

Find the volume of the region bounded by the cone Z =

and the paraboloid Z = x2 + y2.
ANS: /6

x2 + y2 .

4.
Find the moment of area of the region R about z-axis, where R is
region in the first quadrant bounded by:
i)

x2 - y2 = 1,

ii) x2 - y2 = 9,

the

iii) xy = 2 and iv) xy = 4

ANS: 8
5.
The density per unit area of a circular lamina of radius a varies as the
cube of the distance from a single point on the edge. Find the
mass of
this lamina.
ANS: 16/75 a5 where a is the diameter.
6.
By using transformation into polar co-ordinates, evaluate the mass of
a plane sheet of material cut in the shape of the first quadrant of
the circle
x2+ y2 = 1, if the density of the sheet (mass per unit area) is given by x2+ y2.
Use this results to obtain the x co-ordinate of the centre of gravity of the
sheet.
ANS: 8/5
7.

Find the mass of sphere, centre 0 radius a whose density is given by

( x, y, z ) = x 2 + y 2 + z 2 .
(Hint: Use spherical polar co-ordinates).
