Graphic Formats
Different types of documents
have different requirements
for graphics handling

High end programs can import


a wide range of graphics
formats.
You can clarify which file
options to use by consulting
with the people who will print
the document as well as
understanding the purpose of
the document and the workflow.

Heres a look at some of the formats
you will get to know.

.JPG

One of the most common formats is a


.jpeg or .jpg
Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)
Works especially well for photos
Loses sharpness when large areas of a
single color are present
Commonly called a lossy format for its
tendency to discard extra data not
essential for displaying

The friendly .tif is highly
compatible with many programs

Tagged Image File (TIF)


Flexible bitmap image format
Supported by virtually all paint, image
editing, and page layout applications
Nearly all desktop scanners can
create .tif files

The original image standard for
displaying graphics on the web

Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)


Compresses data without losing detail
(some call it lossless)
Not recommended for commercial
printing
Only displays 256 colors

What is a .bmp file?

Standard bitmap image file


Does not support CMYK
Color support is limited to 24 bits
Not good for commercial printing
Only good enough for low resolution
Not at all supported by web browsers

Think of an .eps file like a
translator that speaks all
languages fluently

Based on the PostScript language


(EPS = Encapsulated PostScript)
Transfers PostScript language
artwork to all other applications
Supported by most image editing
and page layout programs
Can contain both vector and
bitmapped images

Is a .png file worth knowing
about or is it a dead format?

Initially developed as a patent


free alternative to the more
popular .gif format
.png stands for Portable Network
Graphics
Mostly used for online documents
rather than printed materials
It is probably a better alternative
for print than a .gif is due to its
better color support

What is so special about the
native .psd file format?

Native format of industry standard


photo editing software
A .psd file allows you to save a
document in layers, which is
essential when editing photos
It also allows you to embed color
profiles in documents
Can print 32 bit color

software uses .ai files

Native format of industry standard


illustration software
Allows placement directly into page
layout programs and into photo editing
programs
It is based primarily on vector
(mathematical) graphics

What is the purpose of a .pdf file
format? What makes it different?

Portable Document Format (PDF) was


created for the electronic distribution
and viewing of complete documents
Can preserve color quality and layout
precision sufficiently for electronic
distribution of prepress work. A print
shops friend!

Can preserve editing capabilities (like


layers) while being immediately
viewable to anyone
Can greatly reduce the file size while
maintaining the integrity of print quality
and edit-ability of the document
Can be shared and proofed/edited
with others straight from the computer
Can secure document to keep others
from borrowing, changing, or
deleting information

wmf Stands for: Windows
Metafile Format
Why do we need this one?

Developed primarily to share vector


art such as clip art between users
and applications (raster information
may be also contained in .wmf files)
Only supports 16 bit color and does
not allow for color separations,
making it an unlikely file for printers
to use very much

.pict file extension designed
for Mac operating systems

.pict = picture file


Widely used for transferring files
between applications
Especially effective when images
have large areas of solid color
Not recommended as a commercial
print choice because it does not
support color separations

Some of the more uncommon
formats you need to know
about

.pcx or PC Graphics - Only supports


24 bit color so is not good for
commercial printing
.dcs or Desktop Color Separations
somewhat similar to the .eps format
discussed earlier in that it is intended
to be used in a host-based, preseparated workflow
