Standard:
Grade 8th
ACT-AM-8. Students will apply atmospheric dynamics to aeronautical
components.
b. Interpret the relevance of pressure changes to indicated altimeter readings.
c. Identify wind direction and speed as it applies to flight planning, crosswind components, and aircraft
performance.
d. Apply seasonal and geographical weather variations to flight characteristics and aircraft
performance
Grade 7th
ENGR-II-7- Multimedia presentation software is an effective tool that will enable the user to
present information in an organized manner. Presentations may be used as an outline, a
teaching tool, or an enhancement in entertainment.
The student will utilize Movie Maker software to create Claymation.
b)
Identify and explain Claymation terminology including the elements of animation.
c)
Plan and design a Claymation Movie.
Grade 6th
ENGR-TS-6- The students will develop an understanding of how the design process is used to
develop a construction.
a) Identify the steps of the design process
b) Identify how designs are used in a variety of settings
c) Illustrate how the model is utilized to be functional
d) Construct and work in 2 dimension and 3 dimension

What Are we Learning Today? (Learning Intentions)

What Im Looking For (Success

How are rockets formed?

What causes the rockets to remain in space?
What is the role of a rocket?

Criteria)
Describe how rockets are formed
Explain how gravity and force
operates
Determine what items are need to
have a successful rocket

How do I add custom animation in a presentation?

How do I create an effective clay animation utilizing the
various multimedia software tools?

How to construction a Floor Plan Design?

How to determine the dimension?

Describe how to choose effective

backgrounds, graphics, and colors.
Determine what information should
be included in a presentation and how
to best present it.

What is the differences between 2D and 3D design?

Students will understand design

Show the students a video of how Claymation works.

Show the students a video of how to construct a building or a house. Students will also watch
video A Day Made of Glass to get ideas for the project.

Work Period (I do, we do, you do)

(30 minutes)

Grade 8th Only

Have students create a T-chart to compare model rockets to real rockets. Use this
following website as a guide for discussion:
http://exploration.grc.nasa.gov/education/rocket/rktcompare.html
Have students investigate additional ways that engineers control rockets besides
the use of fins. A good place to start is
http://exploration.grc.nasa.gov/education/rocket/rktcontrl.html
Have students research the weight and required thrust of some of NASA's rockets
Students will work in groups to develop their own rockets using only the materials
that are given.
Students will create a water rocket and will test the results outside using the lifter
for distance and time.

Evaluation and Assessment

Students will be evaluated on participation according to the rubric, test

assessment for this concept, completion of the project by given deadline.

Grade 7th Only

Divide the class into groups.

Instructional Procedure for Claymation:
The students will be given an introduction to claymation including a brief history of claymation
and the animators that work with this medium. Several examples will be shown to show the
different technical skills and levels of animation.
There will be a demo of how to do claymation. The demo will include: modeling characters,
changing positions, and tools used in the animation process.

The class will be presented with several options of stories that they will animate as a whole class
(keep in mind what they might be doing in other classes that would be able to tie in with them).
The class will be broken up into groups of 3 to 4 students. These groups will be used during the
animation process.
Actual animation will take place during this class time. Student groups that are not working on
the animation at the time will be working on creating their own storyboard ideas for the story.
Students will take turns at the capture station, when not at the capture station, students will
continue to create their own story boards for the story.
The animation process will continue, students will take turns at the capture station, when not at
the capture station, students will continue to create their own story boards for the story.
Animation will continue, but today will be the last day. As a class, students will take a vote on
what sort of music should maybe accompany their animation. Outside of class, the teacher will
take all still images and render into a movie using Movie Maker, Photoshop or iMovie HD
(depending on what is available.

There will be a viewing of the class animation and there will also be time to share everyone's
storyboards. Students will be asked to comment both on the animation and also the work of their
classmates on their storyboards.
Evaluation/Assessment:
On the last day of the class students will take part in a critique and showing of all of the movies
that were created in the last several class times. Students will be graded and evaluated on how
well they met the requirements and have kept in focused in class and also how they participate
in critique.

SketchUp Instructions document for creating the room.

Assignment Google SketchUp Instructions

Students should work in teams of 4 to 5
Each step should be hand written and all drawings and sketches must be in pencil.
Students will recreate the 4 objects on the assignment. The objects should be correctly drawn
and accurately dimensioned.
The instructor should check each reproduction before the students move on to the next object.
The students will be broken into groups to design a model in 3-D according to the layout floor
plan.
