1. (a) Establish Poisson’s and Laplace’s equations from Gauss’s law. [8]
(b) Obtain the expressions for the far field and the potential due to a small electric
dipole oriented along Z-axis. [8]

2. (a) Find the magnetic vector potential and hence the magnetic field due to a long
straight wire carrying a current I in + Zb direction. [8]
(b) Compare the utility, requirements and applications of Ampere’s Circuital Law
for static magnetic fields, with those of Gauss’s Law for electro static fields.
[8]

3. (a) State the boundary conditions satisfied by electromagnetic fields E and H at


the interface of air and a perfect dielectric. If the dielectric material is replaced
by a perfect conductor, how do the boundary conditions get modified? [8]
(b) In a medium of µr = 2, find E,B and displacement current density if H = 25
Sin (2 x 108 t + 6x) yb mA/m. [8]

4. Write short notes on:

(a) Surface impedance


(b) Brewster angle
(c) Uniform plane wave characteristics
(d) Total internal reflection. [4×4]

5. (a) In a perfect dielectric medium, the electric field progressing in the Z-direction
is given by the equation Ex = Exo Cos(wt−βZ) and the associated magnetic
field by Hy = Ex/η where Exo is the Peak Value of Ex at t = 0 and Z=0 and
η is the intrinsic impedance of the dielectric. Prove that the average power

flowing through an area S normal to the Z-axis is given by P z, ax = 2η [8]
(b) In a non-magnetic medium, E = 4Sin(2π107 t − 0.8x)ZV b /m. Determine H ,
dielectric constant, intrinsic impedance and the time average power carried by
the wave. [8]

6. (a) Explain the significance of TEM wave in a parallel plane guide, and derive an
expression for the attenuation factor for TEM waves. [8]
(b) Explain and sketch the nature of variations of attenuation with frequency in
a parallel plate wave guide for TE, TM and TEM waves. [8]

7. (a) Define the i/p impedance of a transmission line and derive the expression for
it. [8]
(b) The characteristic impedance of a certain line is 710 |14 0 Ω and γ = 0.007 +
j0.028 per km. The line is terminated in a 300 Ω resistor. Calculate the i/p
impedance of the line if its length is 100 km. [8]

8. (a) Describe various methods used to match a transmission line terminated by a


load impedance not equal to the characteristic impedance of the line. [8]
(b) A dipole aerial whose input impedance is a pure resistance of 100 Ω is to be
matched at a frequency of 100 MHz to by feeder having Z0 = 600 Ω by means
of a quarter wave transformer. Determine the parameters of the transformer
and mention its merits and demerits. [8]

1. (a) A charge Q1 is at point (0,-1,0)m. Another charge Q2 is at the point (0,2,0)m.


Find the ratio Q2 / Q1 resulting in zero force on a test charge at the origin.
Q1 , Q2 and the test charge are all of the same sign. [8]
(b) A circular disk of radius ‘a’ is uniformly charged with ρs C/m2 and is in z=0
plane. Find the Electric Field at the point (0, 0, h) along its axis. [8]

2. (a) Explain the nature of line, surface and volume current distributions as ap-
plicable to static magnetic fields. List out the expressions for the magnetic
field intensity in these three cases. [6]
(b) Determine the voltage induced in a conducting bar positioned at y = 8 cm.,
in xy-plane, in a magnetic field of 10000 Cos (106 t) Zb A/m. What will be
the result if the magnetic field is stationary ? [5]
(c) Sketch the electric and magnetic field lines in the cross section of a coaxial
cable. Hence compare the two types of field distributions (no derivations) [5]

3. (a) In free space D = Dm Sin (wt +β z)ax . Determine B and displacement current
density. [8]
(b) Region 1, for which µr1 = 3 is defined by X < 0 and region 2, X < 0 has
µr2 = 5 given H1 = 4 ax + 3ay 6 az (A/m). Determine H2 for X > 0 and the
angles that H1 and H2 make with the interface. [8]

4. A y-polarized uniform plane wave with fields (Ei , Hi ) and a frequency of 100
MHz propogates in air in the + x direction and impinges normally on a perfectly
conducting plane at x = 0, assuming the amplitude of Ei to be 6 mV/m, write the
phasor and instantaneous expressions for. [4×4=16]

(d) Determine the location nearest to the conducting plane where ET and HT are
zero.

5. (a) State and Prove Poynting Theorem. [10]


(b) A Plane wave traveling in a free space has an average poynting vector of 5
watts/m2 . Find the average energy density. [6]

6. (a) Explain the factors on which cut off frequency of a parallel plate wave guide
depend. [8]
(b) Obtain the frequency in terms of cut off frequency fc at which the attenuation
constant due to conductor losses for the T Mn mode is minimum for a parallel
plate wave-guide. [8]

7. (a) List out the applications of transmission lines. [5]


(b) Draw an equivalent circuit of a two wire transmission line. [5]
(c) A lossy cable which has R = 2.25 Ω /m, L = 1.0 µ H/m, C = 1 pF/m and G
= 0 operates at f = 0.5 GHz. Find out the attenuation constant of the line.

8. (a) Explain the principle of Impedance matching with Quarter wave Transformer?

(b) A 100 Ω loss less line connects a signal of 100 KHz to a load of 140 Ω. The
load power is 100mW . Calculate [8]
i. Voltage Reflection coefficient,
ii. VSWR,
iii. Position of VM ax , IM ax Vmin and Imin.

1. (a) State the Coulomb’s law in SI units and indicate the parameters used in the
equations with the aid of a diagram. [6]
(b) Point charges Q1 and Q2 are respectively located at (4, 0, -3) and (2, 0, 1). If
Q2 = 4 nC, find Q1 such that. [10]
i. The E at (5, 0, 6) has no Z-component.
ii. The force on a test charge at (5, 0, 6) has no X-component.

2. An infinitely long straight conducting rod of radius ‘a’ carries a current of I in +


Zb direction. Using Ampere’s Circuital Law, find H b in all regions and sketch the
variation of H as a function of radial distance. If I = 3 mA. and a = 2 cm., find H b
and β at ( 0, 1cm., 0) and (0, 4cm., 0). [16]

3. (a) From the Maxwell’s Curl’s equations, derive the wave equations for a plane
wave traveling in the Positive X-direction in a medium with constants µ =
µ0 , ε = ε0 and σ 6= 0. [10]
(b) If distilled water has constants µr = 1, εr = 81 and Power factor = 0.05 at
1GHz, Calculate the Depth of penetration. [6]

4. A uniform plane wave of angular frequency ‘W’ in a medium 1 having a refractive


index ‘n1 ’ is incident on a plane interface at z=0 with medium 2 having a refractive
index ‘n2 ’ (< n1 ) at the critical angle. If Eio and Eto denote the amplitudes of the
incident and refracted electric field intensities respectively, Find [16]

(a) the ratio Eto /Eio for perpendicular polarization


(b) the ratio Eto /Eio for parallel polarization.

5. (a) What is meant by direction cosine of a vector and point out its advantages?

(b) Verify that the cosine of the angle between any vectors E1 and E2 is the sum
of the products of the direction cosines of these vectors? [8]

iv. Also find out the magnitude of reflection coefficient when ZL is purely
reactive.

8. (a) Explain the significance and principles of single stub matching. [8]
(b) A loss less transmission line, Zo = 50 Ω has a load impedance of 70 + j20 Ω.
Design a single stub for achieving impedance matching at 100 MHz. [8]

conduction current density. If this current density exists in a cylindrical rod
of 2 cm. diameter, evaluate the current that can flow through the rod. [8]

3. (a) Distinguish between good conductors and good dielectrics. Explain the wave
propogation in good dielectrics. [8]
(b) Explain the term ”Skin effect Resistance” and obtain its value for copper at
one Megahertz. Assume the conductivity of copper as 5.8 x 107 mhos/meter.

iii. Principal wave and its characteristics

7. (a) Sketch the voltage and current distribution along matched, open and short
circuited transmission lines. [6]

Find the received current and voltage when 200 mA are
