~~THIS WEEKS MEETING~~

The meeting was opened by Debbie Roessler, whose Thought for the Day was several quotes about leadership and a great example of a recent distinguished Cal grad, and she also led the Pledge of Allegiance. Guests this week were: Linda Mays mother Lena; Louise Schopkes mother Marie and husband Ron; Anne Damaschino, Pam Reneau, and Linda Campbell; and our speaker Ted Klauber and his wife Jasmine.

~~THIS WEEKS PROGRAM~~

Our speaker today was Ted Klauber, brought back again this year by popular demand, to provide the insights of an Ad Man on the latest Super Bowl commercials. Hes a U of Wisconsin graduate, and has spent his career in advertising, based in New York, Detroit, Seattle, and San Francisco, primarily flogging autos, tech stuff, and apparel. The Super Bowl is watched by about 108 million viewers in the USA, half of all households, and about 50% watch it to view the commercials too. The latest price for 30 seconds of commercial time was $3.8 million, although large buyers probably got a discount. There are more potential advertisers than time available, so the long-term advertisers are effectively grandfathered in. About 70% of adults watch the nd program, and it is the 2 largest food consumption event in the country, after Thanksgiving. Advertisers are now using social media in their advertising and marketing. Some companies have contests for consumers to design an ad, with the winners having their ideas made into advertising videos. This year, the Doritos goat commercial was from a consumer suggestion, but Ted wasnt sure it was such a good idea. Oreo cookies used social media to send

~~ANNOUNCEMENTS~~
Gary Irwin: We had a great bunch of workers for the Community Faire booth this SaturdayNora Avelar, John Erickson, Herb Wehmeyer, Frank May, Kevin Reneau, Rich Render, Debbie Roessler, Al Simonsen, and walk-ons Cliff and Mary Elena Dochterman and Lou Roessler. Please let the newsletter editor know of anyone Gary missed recognizing, and his salary will be reduced. Gary also passed around the signup sheet on behalf of Chairperson Jody Parker for the Moraga Rotary Golf Tournament, which this year will be held at Moraga Country Club on Tuesday June 4 after the Rotary meeting that day. Jody has graciously volunteered to host cocktail party food to

Tweets in 2012 when the field lights went out the tag line was you can dunk [Oreo cookies into milk] in the dark, and it didnt cost them any air time. Many commercials display a Twitter hashtag so that consumers can contact the company directly and receive additional information. Ted reviews ads with three broad criteria: 1) Branding, Strategy, Mission 2) Relativity, Applicability, and Fit 3) Creativity. Its also important to note how the commercial moves a consumer to buy the product or service. Ted thought the commercials overall were a bit better than in 2012, but the spread in quality and effectiveness seemed broader. A brief summary of his ratings are: Best! . . . . Budweiser Clydesdalespeople look forward to this series, and they provide huge brand awareness. . . . . God made a Farmer, by Dodge Trucks. This ad was aimed squarely at taking market share from Chevrolet, and achieved a 3% monthly sales increase, which was phenomenal. Montanastained shirt, by Tide soap. A subtle message by Proctor & Gamble, a very conservative advertiser. Worst! . . . .Bud Black Crown and Becks Sapphire beers competing, strange messages from the same beer company. . . .Calvin Klein mens underwear, m odeled by guys way more fit than their customers . . . . Mio sports drink, with a poorly used celebrity and fuzzy message. . . . GoDaddy, worse than last year, with model and nerd making out, and consistently unclear about what they are selling. Ted has agreed to provide a similar program to us next year. President Frank gave Ted a certificate that we have made a th $25 loan through KIVA to Irina in El Salvador, our 37 such investment this year.
