Unique power grid project
launched in Oregon, USA
A
unique insider's view of a working smart grid demonstration project
with the development of the 8,000-square-foot Salem Smart Power
Center facility in Salem, Oregon, USA, by Portland General Electric. Whats truly unique about this
is the way a 5MW lithium-ion battery systemis at the centre of everything.
Installed with a large-scale energy storage system, the centre is primarily a test-bed to help PGE test
how to store and better integrate variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind into the
power grid, along with several other smart technologies as part of its Salem Smart Power Project. The
technologies work together to create a highly reliable micro-griddesigned to serve about 500 business
and residential customers in southeast Salem.
PGE collaborated with Eaton and EnerDel, Inc. on the $23 million Salem Smart Power Project. The
project received U.S. Department of Energy matching funds as part of the largest regional smart grid
demonstration project in the US officially its known as the Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration
Project (PNW-SGDP).
We are demonstrating smart grid technologies to help teach others how to build intelligent energy
resources for the future, while continuing to deliver long-term value for our own customers," Jim Piro,
PGE president and CEO, told WIP. "We are proud of the collaboration, hard work and ingenuity that went
into this project, and thank our customers who volunteered to participate in this important study."
Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, chairman of the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee,
outlined the international importance of this smart grid set-up: "Increasing renewables, reliability and
storage moves our country toward a low-carbon, more sustainable energy future. This Smart Power Center
and the Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project shows that when it comes to energy innova-
tion, Oregon takes a back seat to no one."
The PGE project will test energy storage, dispatchable standby generation, remotely operated power
line switches, demand response, renewable energy integration and transactive control.
PGE worked with EnerDel to outfit the centre with a 5MW, lithium-ion battery system, while Eaton
provided engineering expertise and two-way inverters to manage and operate the energy storage system.
The energy storage system works with state of Oregon standby generators to create a high-reliability
zone to reduce service interruptions for PGE customers. The Oregon State Data Center, Oregon Military
Department and the Anderson Readiness Center are all participating in the research.
Salem-based Kettle Brand, the pioneer of kettle-cooked potato crisps and an industry leader in
sustainability, is connecting its 616-panel rooftop
solar installation to the project to help test
storage and bring solar energy into the grid when
it's needed most.
To test demand-response technologies, PGE
business customers are volunteering to cycle
their heating, cooling and other systems on and
off throughout the day or shift their use to
off-peak.
PGE is also testing its own Smart PowerSM soft-
ware, which brings power generating resources
online at the optimal time.

EU ETS in turmoil after carbon-credits rejection
Last month the European Union
Parliament rejected a proposal to
backload - or postpone - the
auctioning of additional credits
within the EU Emissions Trading
Scheme (EU ETS). The proposal
was aimed to rebalance the
supply of credits and stabilise the
price of carbon.
The rejected vote prompted the
price of credits within the EU ETS
to plummet.
The European Commissioner for
Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard
responded to the vote. She com-
ments: The Commission, of
course, regrets that the European
Parliament has not approved the
back-loading proposal...Europe
needs a robust carbon market to
meet our climate targets and spur
innovation. The Commission
remains convinced that back-
loading would help restore
confidence in the EU ETS in the
short term.
The WorldGBCs European
Regional Network also weighed in
on the vote, commenting: Today
is a desperately sad day for the
EU; previously a world leader on
climate change policy, and with
many countries around the world
developing their own cap-and-
trade schemes, the message
we have sent out is an over-
whelmingly negative one.
The EU ETS not only supports the
emissions reduction targets of
European countries and corpora-
tions, but also the trading of the
UN flexible mechanisms under the
Kyoto Protocol, including
Certified Emissions Reductions for
Clean Development Mechanism
projects.

Aquamarine Power
secures full consent
for 40MW Lewis wave
energy farm
Aquamarine Power has
received full consent from
the Scottish Government
for a 40MW wave farm off
the north-west coast of
Lewis, Scotland - making it
the world's largest fully-
permitted ocean energy
site.
The nxt few years will see
the deployment of between
40 and 50 Oyster devices
along the coast at Lag na
Greine, near to Fivepenny
Borve, in one of the best
wave energy locations in
Europe. Once complete, the
farm will have the capacity
to power nearly 30,000
homes.
New biomass plant to
be built in Senta,
Serbia
The northern Serbian town
of Senta will provide the
location for a new biomass-
fired cogeneration plant
which will be built in two
phases. The first phase,
costing 15.2m will produce
8.4 MW of heat and 4.9 MW
of electricity, with a second
phase scheduled to be
completed in 2015-16.
The plant will require fuel
in the form of 35,000
tonnes of biomass a year,
supplied by agricultural
operations in neighbouring
municipalities.
European investors behind
the project include
Belgiums renewable energy
project developer
WindVision, and Synvalor of
the Netherlands, which has
already been awarded the
plant design contract.
Google decides to go fly a kite and make power
Google has bought a US-based-
company which generates power
using turbines which are mounted
on tethered kites or wings.
Makani Power will become part
of Google X - the secretive
research and development arm of
the search giant. The deal comes
as Makani carries out the first
fully autonomous flights of robot
kites bearing its power-generating
propellers.
Google has not said how much
it paid to acquire Makani, but it
has already invested $15m
(9.9m) in the company.
Makani reports that the deal
will "provide us with the
resources to accelerate our work
to make wind energy cost
competitive with fossil fuels".
Rather than use fixed turbines
to generate power, Makani has
recently been experimenting with
flying wings adorned with
several smaller turbines which act
as propellers as the craft takes
off.
Makani claims that mounting the
turbines on a wing is more
efficient as large numbers can be
built with fewer materials than
traditional tower-based turbines.
In addition, the robot wings can
land to avoid damage if wind
speeds are too high or during bad
weather.
The compan has plans to
operate the tethered wings in
small groups of six with each one
anchored at the
points of a vast
hexagon. The wings
operate between
250m (820ft)and
600m meters above
ground.
The firm has
just successfully
completed tests on
a 30 kW prototype
to see if its control
system lets it
launch, hover,
and generate power and land
without any human intervention.
Fully working models will be
larger and, Makani hopes, be able
to generate 600 kW. It hopes the
cost of the power generated will
initially be competitive with
off-shore wind farms.
Power is generated by the wing
flying in a circular path, with
electricity transmitted to the
ground via the conducting core of
the tether.
Google X is the big ideas arm
of the search company - it seeks
out unusual investment projects
and is tasked with testing out
ideas outside the normal remit of
the larger company.
The lab has already inspired
investment in Google's self-
driving car initiative currently in
the news and also did the early
investigation work on its
augmented spectacles project
which was launched in 2012.
Leak discovered in Space Station power cooling
On May 10th, 2013, the International Space Station discovered radiator leak in its power system. The leak
was in the system used to cool electronics associated with solar array power channel 2B, one of eight fed by
the station's huge solar panels. Ammonia flowing through a large radiator is used to carry away heat
generated by the array's batteries and electrical
systems.
The two U.S. arrays at the far left end of the station's
integrated power truss - the port six, or P6 arrays -
feed power to electrical channels 2B and 4B.
The P6 set of arrays, like its three counterparts, routes
power from the solar panels directly into the station's
electrical grid during daylight passes, at the same time
charging dual sets of batteries that take over during
orbital darkness. Nasa said the leak is from one
previously leaking loop which could be bypassed if
needed, and that eventual repairing the leak might
require a portion of the station's cooling system be
shut down for about 48 hours.

GAS ENGINES
T
he new onsite power system for
ProMedicas Wildwood campus will
use natural gas to provide
electricity and heat to the hospital
facility.
The system has already been installed on
the hospital campus and will be
commissioned in late June 2013. The
combined heat and power system has
been designed to radically reduce the
hospitals overall energy usage. It will also
serve to decrease the hospitals
greenhouse gas emissions and increase the
campuss Energy Star score.
Because healthcare facilities and hospi-
tals need electricity and heat 24/7/365,
they benefit tremendously from the
energy efficiency and reliability that com-
bined heat and power (CHP) systems pro-
vide, Glenn Powers, energy efficiency
manager, GEM Energy, tells WIP.
This systems compact size and low
sound level make it a nice fit for our
customer.
Natural gas CHP for US

Other local combined
heat and power
systems GEM Energy
has installed &
integrated are located
at the Toledo Museum
of Art, The Huntington
Center; SeaGate
Convention Centre, and
The University of
Toledo in the USA.
GEM Energy provides
comprehensive energy
services & technologies
including energy
management programs,
distributed power
generation systems,
energy management
controls and energy
procurement strategies
for commercial,
institutional, industrial
and mission-critical facilities.
Cranes installed the microturbine
generators which replaced the hospital's
traditional boiler system.
The new compact system, which has a
low sound level, cost about US$500,000,
Joseph Merritt, ProMedica project
engineer, tells WIP.
Using microturbine technology, the
hospital will reduce its carbon footprint
and - Merritt says - should reduce energy
use by 1 million kilowatt-hours per year or
by US$50,000. So, its system costs should
be recouped in 10 years, he said. The
system will use natural gas to provide
heat and electricity.
Over the next month GEM will prep the
campus and its mechanical room for the
system's 24-hour use, which includes tying
in natural gas, heating and water piping,
and electrical feeds. A control system will
be installed to manage the energy
service.
The Microturbine system was chosen
because it provides an immediate impact
for ProMedicas commitment to providing
both energy-efficient and sustainable
facilities, concludes Glen Powers.
GEM Energy recently won a contract to install and integrate a combined heat and power system
at ProMedicas Wildwood campus based in Toledo, USA. GEM Energy has provided
equipment in the form of Capstone Microturbines to transfrom energy usage, reports WIP.

production units and 470 sales and service
outlets worldwide. Sales in fiscal 2012
were 1.342 billion.
Leroy-Somer, a global presence for
accessible service, has infrastructure
operations in Europe, the US, Mexico,
China and India. Leroy-Somer is a global
partner offering, in addition to total
quality, a service dedicated to design
offices, gen-set builders and end-users.
With 470 commercial subsidiaries and
services, Leroy-Somer provides a global
service to multinational companies.
Leroy-Somers markets focus on the
Low, Medium and High Voltage alternator
ranges. Leroy-Somer meets the full
requirements of a variety of business s
ectors: residential, commercial, health,
rental, marine, cogeneration, tele-
communications, power stations,
petrochemicals and wind turbines.
IE2 high-efficiency ATEX motor ranges
Although safety motors for use in ATEX
gas and dust zones were not included in
the EuP European directive lot 11 which
imposes, from 16 June 2011, the exclusive
use of motors with IE2 efficiency level in
accordance with IEC 60034-30, Leroy-
Somer has taken the decision to make the
majority of its ATEX ranges also or
Leroy-Somer - leading manufacturer
in motors & alternators
exclusively available in an IE2 version. In
numerous installations, the ATEX zones
are adjacent to safe zones where the
installation of high-efficiency motors has
now become a statutory obligation.
According to the company, an increasing
number of users are insisting that their
equipment suppliers integrate IE2 motors
on all the machines they supply.
ATEX Gas Zone 1 - Leroy-Somer provides
a new range of flameproof motors with
IE2 efficiency level as standard.
Leroy-Somer has taken the decision to
develop a new range of FLSD flameproof
motors with IE2 efficiency level as
standard (from 11 kW) in order to
anticipate what this market requires.
Leroy-Somer has selected low-loss
magnetic laminations as part of its
optimised component design.
The end shields are ribbed to ensure
maximum heat dissipation. The profile of
the housing cooling fins has been
optimised, reducing the power absorbed
by the cooling fans.
The considerable reduction in
temperature rise increases the life of the
windings (more than 10,000 hrs on
average) and reinforces the capacity to
accept brief overloads. The new cover
and fan design also reduce the noise
level: - 5 dBA for example on a 30 kW
motor running at 3000 rpm.
Leroy-Somer offers a variety of
complementary equipment (PTC or Pt100
sensors, heaters, cable gland, incremental
encoder and/or forced ventilation unit,
Corrobloc finish for harsh atmospheres,
etc). In terms of maintenance, the
greasing intervals have been significantly
extended, resulting in a reduction in
maintenance costs: a 30 kW motor
running at 1500 rpm, operated at an
ambient temperature of 25C, can
therefore run for more than 20,000 hrs
without intervention.
A Guaranteed Availability charter of
delivery times allied with a gearbox
assembly centre allows the customer to
procure several hundred part numbers on
guaranteed short delivery (between 1 and
5 days ex. works depending on the
optional equipment chosen).
As WIP reveals in this company profile, Leroy-Somer is one of the worlds leading manufacturers
in electromechanical & electronic drive systems and a world leader in industrial alternators. A
subsidiary of the Emerson Group, Leroy-Somer is a French company employing 9,300 people.

As part of its LSA 40 line of high-
performance alternators [above] , Leroy-
Somer's Electric Power Generation division
produced the LSA 42.3, a new product in
its Partner low voltage range, designed to
meet the needs of both manufacturers
and users of generators.
LSA 42.3 is a 4-pole three-phase
alternator which offers the following
range of power ratings to complement
those of the LSA 40:
- 50 Hz - 1500 rpm: 25 to 60 kVA
- 60 Hz 1800 rpm: 25 to 60 kW
As with LSA 40, LSA 42.3 is also available
in a dedicated single-phase version. LSA
42.3 comes with three field excitation
versions, to suit customer requirements:
Shunt (high starting capacity); AREP (high
starting capacity + short-circuit capacity);
and PMG (equivalent system to AREP)
Available in a single-bearing or two-
bearing version, LSA 42.3 is a particularly
versatile alternator which is mechanically
suitable for most engines on the market.
It is also interchangeable with alternators
from the previous Partner range, reports
Leroy-Somer.
As with LSA 40, compactness is one of
the strong points of LSA 42.3: despite
being the same size as the previous
model, LSA 42.3 gives you increased
power along with high efficiency levels.
This power and efficiency combined mean
that the user saves energy.
What's more, the low reactance of
these new products give them a high
capacity for starting electric motors and
the ability to withstand disturbance from
distorting loads.
Pure Energy generation alternators are
also very easy to install. As such, for LSA
42.3, a cap has been added to the
terminal box originally designed for LSA
40, to ease the access to the AVR. Leroy-
Somer EPG has developed a robust, high-
quality range that meets international
standards and is perfectly suited to the
most complex and restrictive new genera-
tion of Pure Energy alternators.
Leroy-Somers' has also invested money
and research into creating high efficiency
motors, driven by the fact that, on June
2011, European Commission regulation
640/2009 came into effect.
This made it mandatory for class IE2
high-efficiency motors to be placed on the
market.
Based on standard IEC 60034-30 and
defining efficiency classes, this regulation
specifies the efficiency levels to be
attained for machines sold in the current
European market and outlines the full
timetable for their implementation.
The regulation excludes certain motors
on the basis of their specific operating
conditions or specialist categories, such as
brake motors, onboard motors, safety
motors according to directive ATEX
94/9/EC, etc.
Leroy-Somer has proved equal to the
task, releasing complete IE2 efficiency
class motor ranges onto the market well
before the deadline for application of the
June 2011 directive. Its new LS2 range has
been available since the end of 2010.
On the LS2 the winding life has been
doubled thanks to technical choices
designed to reduce the temperature rise,
the terminal box has been made larger,
the DE and NDE shield mounting has been
strengthened. The packaging has also
been redesigned to ensure the motor is
fully protected during transport.
In parallel with this launch of a class
IE2 efficiency range, Leroy-Somer sought
to anticipate the next phase of the
Directive, applicable in 2015, and is
already offering motor ranges with class
IE3 efficiency. A number of manufacturers
have chosen to switch directly to class IE3
motors already. This is another example of
how, even before the 2015 date, Leroy-
Somer has found a way to anticipate its
customers' specific requirements.
The latest challenge involves an
innovative design for IE3 motors. Leroy-
Somer has been successfully developing
its brand new range of IE3 motors for
several years. This new design offers fea-
tures such as optimised cooling
(ventilation, housing fin design, etc) and
redesigned laminations and winding.

result of the increased electrical
efficiencies, which are achieved with a
new long-stroke engine design that fea-
tures high compression ratio steel pistons,
and a high efficiency turbocharger and
electrical generator.
Performance is not compromised at
higher altitudes and ambient conditions
based on updated turbocharger trim
options, reports the company. For
applications isolated from a primary
electric utility, the G3516H offers
industry-leading load acceptance
capability. The new generator set - as
well as the associated electrical and
mechanical equipment required to
complete a fully functional CHP plant -
are being sold and supported through the
global Cat Dealer network.
The generator set also features easy
integration with a customer's building
management system, using a non-
proprietary communication infrastructure
from Caterpillar's new EMCP4.3 generator

he Rolls-Royce Trent 60 is the most
advanced aeroderivative gas turbine
available today. Delivering up to
64MW of electric power in simple cycle
service, at 42% efficiency, the Trent 60
has established a new benchmark for fuel
economy and cost savings.
It also offers operators fast delivery and
installation times and beneficial
performance.
Rolls-Royce will be providing a Trent 60
as part of a contract to supply onsite
power equipment at a CYDSA processing
plant in Veracruz, Mexico.
Marcelo Garza of Mexican textile and
chemicals conglomerate CYDSA said: The
proven efficiency and high power output
of the Rolls-Royce Trent 60 industrial gas
turbine will enable us to meet the
increased power requirements of our pro-
cessing plants. In addition, the ability of
Rolls-Royce to deliver the equipment in a
very tight timescale is critical to helping
us meet our growth objectives.
Under the terms of the contract,
awarded by engineering contracting com-
panies OHL and Sener, the Trent 60 unit
will be installed for duty in a combined
heat and power configuration to provide
process steam and electricity for CYDSAs
processing plants, with excess electrical
power sold to Mexicos national grid.
Incorporating an AC generator &
associated control systems, the Trent 60
will feature WLE (wet low emissions)

technology, utilising water injection
during combustion to reduce emissions
and boost performance, and inlet spray
intercooling to reduce energy
requirements during compression,
resulting in higher power and efficiency
levels.
One of the most efficient gas turbines on
the market, the Trent 60 provides up to
64MW in simple cycle service. Its cold
start capability and high cyclic life allow
it to add power to the grid very rapidly to
compensate for the fluctuations &
variability of renewable and other power
sources, making it ideal for peaking
markets. Key features for power
generation include:
* Meets stringent 25ppm NOx
requirements
* Power generation at 50 or 60 Hz
without a gear box
* Full load train starting with a 205kW
motor
* Electric start motor: 155kW and 215kW
peak
* High cyclic life meets daily peaking
market
* Cold start to full power in under 10
minutes
* Designed for ease of installation and
maintenance.
The Trent 60 is said to be ideally suited
to meet the higher power, variable speed
demands required by applications such as
natural gas liquefaction (NGL), gas
transportation, and gas induction for oil
recovery. Thanks to its three independent
shaft design, the Trent 60 is capable of
meeting driven equipment power demand
at reduced speeds with minimal drop off
in efficiency.
The Trent 60 WLE uses an annular
combustor system from the Trent aero
engine but modified to operate with
liquid and gas fuel.
The injection of water is used to reduce
emissions and boost performance. At ISO
conditions the engine is rated for 64MW.
The Trent 60 can be offered with an
Inlet Spray Intercooling (ISI) system to
reduce the ambient inlet temperature and
decrease the energy required for
compression. The result is higher power
and efficiency at ambients above 7C.
Rolls-Royce has been awarded a contract to supply a conglomerate with onsite power equipment at
its processing plants in Veracruz, Mexico. A Trent 60 unit will be at the heart of the CHP
unit providing process steam and electricity for CYDSAs processing plants, reports WIP.

Management at Siemens, recently
told the media: "The renewed German
CHP law and incentive scheme has made a
business case of the Lausward plant
currently being built in Dusseldorf. This
would have never happened had it been
planned as a pure condensing plant."
The Siemens chief says that selling heat
in addition to electricity has made new
combined-cycle power plants more
economically feasible in Germany.
Siemens aims for a net efficiency of over
61% at the plant, when it becomes opera-
tional in 2016.
Siemens Energy has received an order
for turnkey erection of the Lausward
combined cycle power plant with district
heat extraction in Dsseldorf.
It will employ Siemens H-class
combined cycle gas and steam turbine
technology, which set a world record a
year ago and has since also proven itself
in commercial operation.
The order was placed by Stadtwerke
Dsseldorf AG (SWD). With an electrical
unit output of around 595 megawatts and
a net efficiency of over 61%, the Lausward
CCPP will set a new world record for both
parameters.

the district heating
system in the city of
Dsseldorf.
Never before has it
been possible to extract
300 MWth of district
heat from a single
power plant unit in
combined cycle
operation, claims
Siemens. Thus, the
overall efficiency of the
natural gas fuel will be
around 85%, says the
company.
The Lausward CCPP
plant will be one of the
most efficient and
environmentally
sustainable plants in the
world. The value of the
contracts, including a
long-term maintenance
contract for the
supplied components, is
between 400m and
500 million.
The SGT5-8000H gas
turbine developed by
Siemens forms the heart
of the highly efficient
combined cycle power plant with district
heat extraction in Dsseldorf, Germany.
In addition, the generated thermal
energy will be used for the district
heating system in the city of Dsseldorf.
According to Siemens, never before has
it been possible to extract 300 MWth of
district heat from a single power plant
unit in combined cycle operation. Thus,
the overall efficiency of the natural gas
fuel will be around 85%.
Once it is in fully operation in 2016 the
new plant in Duesseldorf is likely to be be
one of the most efficient and
environmentally sustainable plants in the
world.
The new ultra-efficient 595 MW Lausward combined cycle power plant (CCPP) in Dusseldorf,
Germany, is likely to be the first of many similar plants to come onstream thanks to a recent
development in German CHP legislation, reports WIP.

alkia has undertaken the
installation of high-performance
cogeneration plants, which will
simultaneously produce both electricity
and heat.
The electricity generated will be sold to
the Slovak national grid and the heat will
supply the district heating network.
Cogeneration will be assured by 18 gas
turbines installed in the existing heating
plants, with a total capacity of 15 MW of
electricity.
Vincent Barbier, CEO of Dalkia in
Slovakia comments: "The extension of our
partnership with the city of Bratislava
rewards the efforts put in by Dalkia over
the past14 years, both in terms of quality
of service and energy efficiency. We will
continue to upgrade the heatingnetwork,
partly by reinforcing the distribution
network's reliability and also by improving
the system's energyefficiency, with no
impact on tariffs."
Since 2000, Dalkia has been providing
heat and hot water for the whole of
Petralka, which, with 40,000 households,
is the largest residential district in central
Europe.
In 2003, the first energy performance
Heating for Bratislava's
Petralka district from Dalkia
contract was added,
covering all the schools
in the neighborhood.
This project was
carried out in partner-
ship with SIEA, the
Slovak innovation and
energy agency.
It generated more
than 25% energy
savings, with no impact
on the public
investment budget.
The resolve of the
government authorities
to defend energy
efficiency projects, the
commitment of local
elected representatives
and the professionalism of Dalkia came
together to bring about this project,
which was very innovative at the time.
Dalkia has been operating in Slovakia
since 1993 and now employs more than
800 people there.
It is a market leader in heating
networks and industrial utilities and is
also a pioneer in the field of energy
performance contracts. In July 2012
Dalkia signed a partnership contract with
Kosice, the country's second largest city,
for the energy management of all schools
in the area, including over 70 middle and
high schools.
A subsidiary of Veolia Environnement and
Electricit de France (EDF), Dalkia is a
global leader in energy services and
provides innovative solutions to support
the sustainable growth of cities and
businesses.
In an era of climate change, volatile
energy prices and scarce resources, Dalkia
offers customers its expertise in
developing, constructing and operating
greener and more economical energy
solutions.
With almost 50,000 employees in 35
countries, Dalkia reported managed
revenue of 8.9 billion in 2012.
Dalkia has renewed its contract to manage heat generation and distribution in Bratislava's
Petralka district. The 20-year contract extends the partnership with the city of Bratislava until
2039, applying energy efficiency with district heating. WIP has the story.

SONIC SOOT BLOWERS
Y
oungheung Power Plant is a coal-
fired power station located on
Youngheung Island, 40 kilometres
from the South Korean capital, Seoul.
To prevent buildup and blockages within
its SCRs, Youngheung Power Station had
previously relied on retractable steam
soot blowers.
However, due to the deteriorating
condition, reliability and performance of
the steam soot blowers the operating
efficiency of this equipment soon
declined, reports Primasonics.
After analysing the high costs of
replacing and maintaining the steam soot
blowers, plant personnel chose to look for
a more cost-effective and reliable solution
to the problems they were experiencing.
The search by the Youngheung Power
Plant team led them to the Primasonics
website and to its Korean agents, Artronix
System Co. Ltd.
Artronix System Co. Ltd arranged a site
visit with Youngheung Power Station
personnel to discuss in depth the benefits
and capabilities of Sonic Soot Blowers and
16 Sonic Soot Blowers
for South Korea
to obtain the relevant application
information and drawings.
Ultimately, this approach allowed
Primasonics to establish which would be
the most suitable model of Sonic Soot
Blower and the best potential installation
locations.
Following the submission of
recommendations and quotation from
Primasonics, Artronix won the order for 16
Q3 (120 Hz) model Sonic Soot Blowers.
Installation and commissioning of
equipment took place in June 2010 and
was supervised by Primasonics Technical
Director, Alex Bergus, who attended site
to ensure the smooth transition between
cleaning methods.
According to Primasonics, the
installation of the 16 Sonic Soot Blowers
at Youngheung Power Station saw an
increase in the scale removed and a
decrease in the differential pressure in
comparison to the three months prior to
installation.
Plant personnel were so impressed with
the results and low operating and
maintenance costs that the following year
they installed another eight Q3 model
Sonic Soot Blowers on their Number 3 SCR
and are now planning the installation of a
further eight units towards the end of
2013.
Primasonics International Limited was involved in providing a technical solution for the
Youngheung Power Plant in South Korea. Here, scale buildup in the SCR had caused blockages
in the gas flow but this was solved by installing Q3 (120 Hz) model Sonic Soot Blowers.

he Huaneng plant in China has an
overall capacity of 400 MW and the
contract is worth $52m. The unit is
third Alstom gas turbine order for
Huaneng in the last nine months and this
delivery is expected to be delivered early
next year.
Last month two of the transformers
manufactured by Alstom Grids Wuhan
factory (China) in the frame of Brazils Rio
Madeira transmission line contract arrived
at the Porto Velho substation in north-
west Brazil.
The total journey of the transformers
from Wuhan to Porto Velho took around 70
days with stops in Shanghai (China),
Manaus (Brazil) and Porto Velho.
Alstoms GT13E2 gas turbine is said to
build on proven fleet experience for 50 Hz
markets and it has the biggest level of
versatility which means that it can fit to
every possible power plant configuration.
The 2012 upgrade to the engine is said
to make plant more competitive,
improving its efficiency and power output,
lowering the emissions while keeping the
highest reliability level of above 99.5%,
the highest reliability in the heavy duty
gas turbine market reports Alstom.
A spokesman told WIP: The GT13E2 gas
turbine can meet the needs of today, but
is also ready for tomorrows dynamic
power markets. With the 2012 upgrade
GT13E2 gas turbine
generators for China
every major area of
performance has been
addressed, refined and
improved to meet the
customers needs.
Features of the
GT13E2 include:
Improved flexibility
through 2 operating
modes switch online
between maximising
performance or
maximising operation
time between
inspection intervals
Grid frequency
support with high
response and no extra
lifetime factors
Adaptability for a
range of industrial
applications including aluminium smelters
and desalination plants
Support for phased plant construction
with modularised and pre-tested
auxiliaries.
Backed by more than 7 millions of fired
hours, the GT13E2 gas turbine engine has
proven itself to be the ideal core of a
power plant, producing reliable,
competitively priced electricity.
The GT13E2 provides for a wide range of
applications and can operate as a stand-
alone turbine in a new or
existing power plant design or
as part of a turnkey power
plant.
Applications cover electrical
power generation in base load,
intermediate or peak duty. It
can be used in industrial
applications such as aluminium
smelters or cogeneration
plants, for district heating or
desalination. Finally, its modularised and
pre-tested auxiliaries mean it can be
brought on-line quickly to support phased
plant construction.
The turbine can also handle wide
fluctuations in gas composition while the
engine can operate on diesel oil (with or
without water injection for NOx control),
with an online switch-over between gas
and oil, even at full load.
With the GT13E2, operators can achieve
maintenance intervals of 36,000
Equivalent Operating Hours (EOH)
between hot gas path inspections.
This makes the GT13E2 the ultimate
choice for operating regimes with a
higher sensitivity to O&M costs and
availability, reports Alstom.
French power generation giant, Alstom will supply the Huaneng combined heat and power plant
at Suzhou, China, with two sets of GT13E2 gas turbine generators. Operational support for
them is provided 24/7 by the online Alstom Monitoring and Diagnosis System, reports WIP.

T
he Milas-Bodrum Airport project was
delivered on time and within budget
by FGW Jenerator, an official FG
Wilson dealer in Turkey, reports the
company.
Milas-Bodrum is one of the busiest
airports of the Aegean Region, serving
Milas, a residential area with prominent
cultural heritage, and the popular holiday
destination of Bodrum.
The terminal accommodates more than
five million passengers from 40 different
locations annually, meaning FG Wilson is
helping to support the journeys of almost
14,000 people every day.
Milas-Bodrum Airports new international
terminal, which is 425m long with an
indoor area of over 95,000 sq m, has been
provided with a critical standby power
system by FGW Jenerator.
The five high voltage generator sets
provide backup support for the entire new
terminal, including nine passenger
boarding bridges, restaurants, retail
stores, check-in desks and passenger
baggage facilities. They also serve all the
information desks, banks and a post
office, as well as almost 30,000 sq m of
bus and car parking space.
FGW Jenerators power solutions team
completed the installation and commis-

sioning phase in May
2012, overcoming a
series of significant
engineering challenges
in the process.
Any loss of power at
the airport can cause
major issues, so it is
essential that all
critical loads are
re-supplied as quickly
as possible.
In order to achieve
this, FGW Jenerator
installed five FG Wilson
high voltage P1825
generator sets with the
ability to deliver power
to the airport
distribution network at
6.3 kV.
Due to the critical nature of the
application, the management and control
of the entire standby power system was
implemented using a redundant PLC
(programmable logic controller) in
conjunction with a user-friendly touch-
screen SCADA HMI system.
The primary duty of the PLC system is to
ensure the airport is transferred to
standby power as quickly as possible on
mains failure and on mains return, the
load demand of the airport is smoothly
and seamlessly transferred to the normal
mains supplies.
The generator sets and mains
synchronising capability were ultimately
implemented using Woodward easYgen
3500 controllers, ensuring that the five
generator sets were synchronised and
available to take load within 25 seconds
of any mains power failure.
FGW Jenerator packaged both the PLC
system and the five easYgen controllers in
an integrated floor standing control panel
suite.
To underline the critical nature of this
project, each generator set was supplied
with two methods of engine starting, air
and battery, a capability which delivered
increased redundancy and ensured the
generator sets could always start and be
available to supply the critical airport
loads.
To meet the strict noise conditions on
site, the cooling system for each gen-set
was implemented using a combination of
a set-mounted heat exchanger and low
noise multi-electrical fan remote radiator.
Another key element in enabling the noise
conditions to be met was the installation
in the plantroom of critical exhaust
silencers on each engine.
The skys the limit for FG Wilson, a leading global manufacturer of diesel and gas generator
sets, following the successful completion of the supply and installation of a high voltage power
solution for the new international terminal of Milas-Bodrum Airport in Turkey, reports WIP.

omanias latest CHP plant, located
in Covasna county, will carry out
the basic processing of 800,000
cubic metres of wood per year, out of
which 70% will be further processed into
glued panels.
Around 80% of the plant's output will be
exported - part of it after downstream
processing in other plants owned by
Holzindustrie Schweighofer in Romania.
Biomass projects like these have both
economical and environmental goals
(lowering the costs of energy and
reduction of the quantity of CO2
emissions).
It serves as a good example for other
major companies active in the field of
wood processing or in the field of energy
production.
The Sebes industrial biomass cogenera-
tion plant in Romania has a total capacity
of 43.5 MW (32.6 MWt + 10.9 MWe). It
uses biomass fuels consisting of: bark,
chips, branches and waste from wood pro-
cessing (mainly fir and spruce).
The energy (heat) is used for the
internal industrial process (drying of tim-
ber sawdust), the supplementary heat
production is normally delivered to
residential end-consumers.

consumers and any
supplementary power
production is injected
into the National Power
Grid.
At the Holzindustrie
Schweighofer Sebes
plant in Romania , the
total invetment cost of
the biomass CHP
facility (CHPP I+CHPP
II) was around 30m.
The financing was
ensured mainly by the
private sector (85%)
and Environment Fund
(15%).
The company was
also behind Romanias
biggest biomass-
cogeneration plant
located at a sawmill in
Radauti, Romania. This
began operations on
May 7th, 2009.
This cogeneration plant is fuelled by
biomass-like bark, as well as sawmill and
harvesting residues like chips or branches.
Its 20m investment
cost were partly
subsidised by AFM
(Administration of the
Environment Fund).
The total capacity
of this cogeneration
plant is 22 MW (17
MW thermal, 5 MW
electric).
The heat is
primarily used for the
kiln drying chambers
at the mill site,
whereas the heat potential would be suf-
ficient so supply 7.000 households.
Here, the electricity produced is direct-
ly fed into the public grid and enables the
supply of 25,000 households with green
electricity.
Gerald Schweighofer commented at the
official opening of the Radauti facility
[picture left]: This cogeneration plant is
not only a vital enhancement for the pro-
duction of energy from biomass in
Romania. It also creates new jobs in the
whole production chain.
Austria's Holzindustrie Schweighofer is building a combined heat and power plant to generate
power for a new wood processing facility in Romania. Located in the Covasna county - a region
with abundant wood resources - the plant will be commissioned in 2014, reports WIP.

POWERPLANT
D
eveloper Almacantar has resubmit-
ted plans to convert Londons
iconic Centrepoint - the 34-storey
office tower- into luxury flats.
The building will be upgraded to cut
energy consumption with new high
performance glazing, a central combined
heat and power system and sedum roof.
The planning committee involved in the
project is believed to be - amongst other
options - looking at a GE Jenbacher
JMS416GS-NL gas engine and a
cogeneration facility engineered, installed
and maintained by Clarke Energy, similar
to the one installed at The Shard.
A combined heat and power (CHP)
plant in the Centrepoint building is likely
to be designed to provide around
1.131MW of electricity and 1.199MW of
hot water at high efficiency (85.3% total,
41.4% electrical) to the surrounding area.
The addition of a CHP system will help
to reduce carbon emissions and contribute
to the low-carbon footprint of the build-
ing. In parallel this would provide
significant cost savings versus the
separate purchase of electricity and gas
from the national grids.
Its normal for the generators to be
located in the basement of the building
and they are likely to be housed in
acoustic enclosures in order to negate the
sound emissions from the engines.
Gas engines like these are also
characterised by very low levels of NOx
A new CHP system to be
installed in Centrepoint
emissions
(<250mg/Nm3). These
reduced emissions
levels are important
when it comes to
achieving strict air
quality requirements in
the London metropolis.
At The Shard its all
working well. The
efficiency of up to
47.8% of GE Jenbacher
engines results in out-
standing fuel economy
and the highest levels
of environmental
performance, says GE.
The engines are also
said to be highly
reliable and durable in all types of appli-
cations, particularly when used for natu-
ral gas & biological gas applications. GE
Jenbacher generators are renowned for
being able to constantly generate the
rated output even with variable gas
conditions, says the manufacturer.
The patented LEANOX lean burn
combustion control system fitted on all
GE Jenbacher engines guarantees the
correct air/fuel ratio under all operating
conditions in order to minimise exhaust
gas emissions whilst maintaining stable
operation.
In combination with the LEANOX system
the GE Jenbacher gas mixer balances out
fluctuations in calorific value, which
occurs mainly in biological gas
applications. GE Jenbacher engines can
operate on gases with extremely low
calorific value, low methane number and
hence degree of knock, but also gases
with a very high calorific value.
One of the most important properties
regarding use of gas in an engine is the
knock-resistance rated according to the
methane number.
High knock-resistance pure methane has
a number of 100. In contrast to this,
butane has a number of 10 and hydrogen
0 which is at the bottom of the scale and
therefore has a low resistance to
knocking.
The high efficiency of the GE Jenbacher
engines becomes particularly beneficial
when used in a CHP or tri-generation
application, such as district heating.
One of Londons most visible structures will have a new CHP system installed. The iconic
Centrepoint building on New Oxford Street is set for a 350m upgrade, with an advanced
cogeneration concept forming a significant part of the buildings plan, reports WIP.

Regular on-line washing reduces performance degradation of gas turbines operating
in polluted environments. For the largest gas turbines operating today, Turbotect has
introduced an air-assisted nozzle which uses air jets to bracket the wash fuid and
project it into compressor intakes with larger dimensions and faster air fows. The
new nozzle is designed to replace the existing nozzle, but fewer are required. For
the new system, only the same total volume of washing solution is needed to achieve
improved wetting of the surfaces to be cleaned.

MW of PV modules to the Jasper PV, located in
South Africa's Northern Cape. This solar plant will
not only produce clean energy for South African
residents, but also create jobs and help to stimulate
the local economy.
The consortium formed by Iberdrola Ingenieria y
Construccion and South African company Group Five
has been selected by Jasper Power Company to
build the Jasper PV Plant in South Africa, which will
be powered by more than 325,000 Yingli YL295P-35b
multi-crystalline modules spread across 180
hectares. Yingli Green Energy is the exclusive PV
module supplier for this project.
This is said to be a significant milestone in the
history of Yingli Green Energy as the Jasper PV
Solar Plant is one of the solar projects that was
developed by a consortium led by SolarReserve, a
U.S. developer of utility-scale solar power projects,
and was selected by the South Africa Department of
Energy (DOE) in May of 2012 in the second round of
bids under the South Africa Renewable Energy
Independent Power Producer Procurement Program
(REIPPPP). The South Africa DOE awarded the
construction of eight PV plants and seven wind
farms during the second round of bidding.
Iberdrola selected Yingli Green Energy based on
experience of performance yield in existing
projects, superb quality and technology leadership.
In addition, given that Yingli Green Energy is one
of the major crystalline manufacturers to have
secured Munich RE's module performance warranty
insurance, the project will also be covered under
Munich RE's Option Cover. The Option Cover provides
greater investment security over the lifetime of the
project financing.

SME to build & test PLAT-O paltform with STG 50 turbines
Sustainable Marine Energy (SME) will build and test a new generation
systems integration platform aimed at enabling tidal energy to
become a cost effective green source of energy. SME will be using its
unique PLAT-O platform, together with STG 50 tidal turbines it is
purchasing from propulsion experts SCHOTTEL GmbH, for trials off
the Isle of Wight. The trials will show the
ways SMEs new platform can drive down the
costs and risks of device installation and
maintenance, and help enable tidal energy
to become genuinely viable, from a small
unit up to utility scale deployments
providing MW capability. www.schottel.de
ORegen Waste-Heat Recovery Systems from GE
Berakas Power Company (BPC), Bruneis national energy company,
plans to install GE Oil & Gas innovative ORegenTM waste-heat
recovery systems to increase the output and efficiency of four GE
LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines at the Berakas Power Station,
located outside the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan in the
Sultanate of Brunei.
The ORegen system will be connected to three of the LM2500 units,
each of which generate up to 22 megawatts (MW). The fourth LM2500
turbine and one waste heat recovery unit will be kept on standby.
GEs ORegen system utilizes a thermodynamic superheat cycle that
recovers waste heat from gas turbines and converts it into 14 MW of
extra net electricity without using fuel or water and does not
produce additional CO2 or NOx emissions. The system also has mini-
mal operational and maintenance requirements. The Brunei project
is the first use of GEs ORegen technology in the Asia-Pacific region.
The equipment for the Berakas project is scheduled to be delivered
at the end of 2014 and commissioned in early 2015. The upgraded
power plant is expected to start commercial operation in the first
half of 2015. In addition to the equipment, GE also is providing site
installation and training as well as a resident engineer to support
BPMC for one year.
GEs ORegen technology is the largest Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)
single unit available for gas turbine waste heat recovery. ORegen is
applicable on any type of simple-cycle gas turbine and can generate
electricity at lower gas turbine loads than a standard combined cycle
system which uses water and steam to recover waste heat.

Quartzelec refurbish & rewind Takadori rotor
When the rotor on a T240-370, 154 MVA generator at the Takoradi
Power Station in Ghana suffered a double earth fault resulting in
severe arcing damage, TAQA, one of the largest independent power
producers in the Middle East and North Africa, turned to the UK-
based electrical engineering group Quartzelec, to deliver a six month
refurbishment and rewinding programme for the failed machine.
The damaged rotor, which measures 8 metres in length and weighs
36.5 tonnes, failed in May 2011 and was substituted with a new spare
rotor purchased from the OEM to allow continued operation.
This was an interesting and challenging
project, explains Steve Cooper, Business
Development for Power Generation at
Quartzelec. With a replacement generator
costing in excess of 2m we provided a
technically competent yet commercially
viable solution to re-establish full generat-
ing capacity. www.quartzelec.com
SDMOs latest innovation is the RC1650 power plant
SDMOs latest innovation is the RC1650 portable power station which
attracted attention at the recent Plantworx show. The R1650 is a
1450kVA, prime power (1200kW COP) portable generating plant fitted
into a 20ft (6m) ISO low cube container. The set has compact
dimensions and is designed to provide major back-up power for
factories, hospitals and/or sites that require continuous electricity at
short notice and where available space is limited.
We received confirmed orders for five 200kVA sets on the opening
day of the show and with the keen interest shown in all our
equipment by the visitors to our stand, we expect more orders to
follow, Clive Dix, SDMOs director, told WIP.
The power rental professionals who scrutinised our R1650 all
commented how compact the set is in relation to its power output,
continued Clive. They were also impressed with the new cooling
system which contributes to a
reduced noise output.
SDMO Industries is one of the
largest producers of power
generation equipment in the world.
Plantworx is a dedicated working
construction machinery show and
was held in May at the Stoneleigh
Park Showground.

Hawke Internationals new boxes for cable terminations
Hawke International has introduced a new range of high capacity,
environmentally-protected, boxes for cable termination. These
enclosures meet the need of offshore drilling and production, marine
and other challenging environments. This addition to the Hawke
stainless steel junction box range permits up to 12 x 400 sq. mm
cable terminations per bus-bar. Units can be flexibly configured for
single phase and Earth, three-phase and Earth or three-phase/neutral
and Earth. Fully ATEX approved and IECEx compliant, these have been
developed for harsh marine environments, the heavy gauge grade 316
stainless steel enclosures will
resist salt & chemical contami-
nation. Heavy duty base plates
give ample room for cable entry
and the installation of cable
glands. Compression controlled
silicone sponge gaskets provide
an effective environmental seal.
