1.0 Scope
This specification is to be used for the liquid penetrant examination of wrought plate material for discontinuities open to the surface. Where the words shall and should appear herein, the former is considered to be a mandatory requirements and the latter to be a recommendation.
2.0 Material
Austenitic stainless steel
7.3 Drying
Sufficient time should be allowed to allow the surface of the plate to dry (solvent evaporation) before applying developer.
7.5 Examination
Final interpretation shall be made after allowing a development period of not less than 30 minutes. If the entire surface area of the plate cannot be examined within the allotted time, only portions of the surface shall be examined at any one time.
8.0 Rejection Criteria 8.1 All linear penetrant indications longer than 1.6 mm(0.06in). Linear is
defined as an indication whose length is at least two times its width. 8.2 Four or more indications in a line, any one of which is separated from the adjacent indication by less than 1.6 mm (0.06 in.) or d, whichever is greater, where D is the major diameter of the larger of the adjacent indications. 8.3 Any single penetrant indication larger than 3 mm (0.13 in.) 8.4 Non-linear penetrant indications less than 0.8 mm (0.03 in.) may be disregarded.
6. A liquid penetrant examination reveals 4 rounded indications which are aligned. The greatest distance between any two of them is 1.6 mm (0.06 in). Their sizes as viewed from left to right are 1.6 mm (0.06 in.), 0.8 mm (0.03 in.), 2.4 mm (0.09 in.) and 1.6 mm (0.06 in.). No other indications are present. a. this area is acceptable b. this area is rejectable c. there is not sufficient information given to determine acceptability d. spacing does not matter 7. A linear indication is an indication where : a. W = 2L b. L W c. L 2W d. L = 3W 8. When removing the excess penetrant a. a solvent-dampened cloth must be used b. a dry absorbent cloth must be used c. care must be taken to aoid removing penetrant from discontinuities d. all traces of excess penetrant must be removed 9. Final interpretation shall be made : a. after allowing a development perid of 7 to 30 minutes b. from 7 to 30 minutes after developer has dried c. with a black light d. after post-cleaning 10. For penetrant application, the a. ambient temperature shall be between 16 and 52 oC (60 and 125o F) b. temperature of the penetrant shall be between 16 and 52 oC (60 and 125o F) c. temperature of the part shall be between 60 and 125 oC (140 and 257o F) d. minimum dwell time shall be 15 minutes
