Water-Cooled
Single-Screw Chiller
R-134a ZUWM Series

High Reliability Single-Screw Compressor

The semi-hermetic single-screw
compressor has features such as
high-efficiency, energy saving,
stability, quietness, few operation
components and high durability.

High-efficiency Single-Screw
Compressor

Features of Single-Screw Compressor

Axial Force Balance
With opposing and equal suction pressure at both
ends of the screw member, the huge thrust loads of
twin-screw compressor design are eliminated.

Balance Compression Design to

Prolong the Bearing Durability
The bearing durability of the single-screw
compressor is three or five times that of twinscrew compressor.

Radial Force Balance

Gate rotors on both sides of the screw member
compressing simultaneously balanced radial
loading on the rotating screw, which nearly
eliminates bearing wear. This is a sharp contrast
with twin-screw designs whose bearing size is
limited and higher loads directly impact bearing life.

Easy to Maintain
The gate rotor box is designed with disassembly side
cover, which makes the regular examination easy.
Disassembling and installing the pipe provide a
direct way to examine the internal components
of the compressor.

Twin-screw is with unbalance loading. Without

balance compression, the twin-screw increases
axial loads and radial loads, and it increases
abrasion, which affects the bearing life.
The frame for single-screw compressor has a well-balanced
compression mechanism which cancels the screw rotor load
in both the radial and axial directions. Inherent to the basic
single-screw compressor design is the virtually load-free
operation, which gives main bearing design life of 3-4 times
greater than twin-screws, and eliminates expensive and
complicated thrust balancing schemes. The two exactly
opposed gate rotors create two exactly opposed
compression cycles. Compression is made at the lower and
upper parts of the screw rotor at the same time, thus
canceling the radial loads. Also, both ends of the screw
rotor are subjected to suction pressure only, which
cancels the axial loads and eliminates the huge thrust
loads inherent in twin-screw compressors. Oil injection is
used for these compressors in order to get high COP at
high condensing pressure. ZUW units are provided with
a high efficiency oil separator to maximize oil extraction.
Compressors have a variable capacity control down to
30% of its total capacity. This control is made by means
of capacity slides controlled by microprocessors.
Standard method of starting is star-delta to realise
minimum starting current; Soft start type is available
as an option.
1

High Durability and Reliability

With equalizing compression, the single-screw can
reduce the bearing load to extend the bearing
durability. The gate rotor, which is made of
high-intension synthetic material, can keep
minimum clearance to realise the operation
is under no abrasion. The oil-ejection and liquidejection design of the compressor enable the
overheat-gas to decline to the minimum, which
eliminates to decompose the oil and refrigerant in an
overheated condition.

Low Noise and Low Vibration

The single-screw compressor keeps balancing the
load in operation to reduce vibration and noise.
It does not contact metal in compression, which
eliminates high-frequency noise.
Abnormity discharge chamber design eliminates
discharge noise.

High-efficiency Oil Separator

The system is equipped with high-efficiency oil
separator to improve the oil-separating efficiency
to 99.7%, This way, the reliability and efficiency
are improved in compressor operation.

Few Operation Components

The single-screw compressor is equipped with
only five operation components: a screw rotor,
two gaterotors and two energy adjusting slide valve.
The screw rotor is partly painted with aluminum, and
the gate rotor is equipped with eleven-tooth high
strength compound material.

The Design of the Gate rotor and

Rotors
The single-screw compressor, with design and
special gate rotor material, has no need for metal
hermetic requirement between the gate rotor and
rotors. The liquid refrigerant is more effective with its
hermetic design when the compressor operates. As
the interval between the teeth is very small and the
resistance is very low, the unit's efficiency is
improved.

Chiller Features
High Performance Flooded Evaporator
Flooded shell-and-tube evaporator operating with refrigerant in shell and
water in tubes. Replaceable water tubes are fabricated from integral
finned copper and mechanically bonded to steel tube sheets. Water side
working pressure is designed for 1.0MPa. Vessels Include spring loaded
pressure relief valves. Shell and non-connection water heads are
insulated with 3/4 thick closed cell insulation. Standard configuration on
water connections side is two passes and victaulic ready with groove
only.

Servo Controlled Modulating Liquid

Level Regulators
ZUW are equipped with a modulating servo-controlled main expansion
valve type controlled by a pilot float valve type to modulate refrigerant flow
to the evaporator, proportionally to the required capacity.
This enables a stable regulation and economic operation for low possible
operating cost.

Water Volume in Chilled Water System

Condenser
Shell-and-tube type operating with refrigerant in shell and water in tubes.
Replaceable water tubes are fabricated from integral finned copper and
mechanically bonded to steel tube sheets. Water side working pressure
is designed for 1.0MPa. Standard configuration on water connections
side is two passes and victaulic ready with groove only.

Efficient Operation on Part Load

Condition
The majority of comfort cooling systems operate at 60% or less of
building design load for most of the year. For that reason, ZUW chiller is
designed to obtain part load performance. This is achieved by a
combination of individual component features that include compressor
design, operating control, and more heat transfer surface with only one
compressor running.

The chilled water system should have a minimum water content to avoid
excessive compressor starts and stops. During the span of one hour there
should be no more than 3 starts per compressor. The plant side should
therefore realise that the overall water volume allows a more constant
functioning of the unit and consequently great comfort.
The minimum water volume should be calculated using this simplified
formula:
(1) Q=35.83 x P (kW) x 1
T (C) N
Where:
Q = Minimum content of the plant expressed in liters.
P = Cooling capacity of the plant expressed in kW.
T = Entering/leaving water temperature difference of the evaporator
expressed in C.
N = Number of compressors.

Note:
1. Voltage tolerance 10%. Voltage unbalance between phases must be within 3%.
2. Absorbed current referred to nominal condition: 12/7C entering/leaving evaporator water temperature; 30/35C entering/leaving condenser water temperature.
3. For ZUW110AM~ZUW170AM, unit max inrush current is the inrush current.
For ZUW220AM~ZUW350BM, unit max inrush current = inrush current of compressor #2 + nominal unit current of compressor #1.
For ZUW370AM~ZUW510AM, unit max inrush current = inrush current of compressor #3 + nominal unit current of compressor #2 + nominal unit current of compressor #1.
