Saint Michael Parish Mission Statement:

MASS SCHEDULE
GIRARD Sat. 5:30pm Sun. 10:00 am ARMA 4:00pm 8:00 am

We the parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel, through leadership and strong traditions are faithful disciples of the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. We commit ourselves to be generous stewards of our faith, our parish, and our community. We strive to involve all members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of all. Notes from the Pastor: Congratulations to our Anniversary Committee for finally launching our 50 Years Anniversary Celebration of our Church building! Kudos to Jim and Margaret OToole, the coordinators of the reception that follows. Thank you to all who came to the celebration in spite of the weather. One of the things we did at the luncheon after the mass last Sunday was recognizing all our volunteers! I forgot to acknowledge a few more of our volunteers- Mary Ann Duling, who have been washing our altar linens (those tiny pieces of cloth that we use at the altar). She has been doing this for many years. I also forgot to recognize Jerry Hanson for leading our bible study group. Also, recognizing Dr. Adam Paoni for leading our That Man Is You and with his wife, Faith, for being a volunteer secretary for five years now and both of them for being our Natural Family Planning teachers. These people and groups I have mentioned, though I know they are not after it, need to be recognized for helping move our parish forward. May God bless them for all that they do! During this anniversary year, opportunities for renewal and spiritual growth are made available and some have been finally set: March 8 to 10 (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) evenings will be our parish mission with Fr. John Lanzrath. Many of you have already heard him speak. He has some talks about stewardship in a video that we played in church. He is very deeply spiritual and a very dynamic speaker! March 28th, Friday night will be souper Friday here at St. Michaels (it will be March 14 th, also a Friday at St. Josephs in Arma) with the talk on Ministry with Persons with Mental Disabilities by Tom Racunas, the diocesan coordinator on this ministry. I can assure you this talk is a very important at least for awareness on how to minister to this kind of our brothers and sisters with this condition. This is also a good Lenten opportunity for renewal! March 22nd (Saturday) will be a whole day pilgrimage tour to the cathedral and Pilsen, the church of Fr. Emil Kappaun. This is a joint activity between Girard and Arma. I hope you will avail of this opportunity and include this in your calendar. More details will follow in the weeks ahead! I would like to present to you our RCIA catechumens this year: Ryan Lee Ashmore from Girard, Next Sunday(01/19/14) 10:00 AM
E. Wilson, E. & J. Brokob, P. & T. Amershek Linda Garrett Denny Heidrick Ron & Jeanette Davied McKinsey Dawn McAtee from Franklin, Ethan Kain Edwards from Mulberry, Debbie Jane Schaub from Arcadia, and Dan Ingram Cole also from Arcadia. They have been attending our classes since last October and preparing to receive the sacraments comes Easter Vigil. This Sunday, January 12 th, they will be received as catechumens in the rite of acceptance at Saint Joseph, in Arma. We do it there this year so St. Josephs could experience this rite as we did here in Girard last year. But the rite of sending will be done here in Girard in March. Please pray for them. That Man Is You will resume this January 24 th, Friday, 6AM at the hall. All men, single, married, or divorced, 18 years and older are all invited to attend! This is another opportunity for faith enrichment and spiritual regeneration! If you have any question you can contact Dr. Paoni or the parish office. Let us pray for the eternal repose of the soul of Ellen Harris who passed away last Sunday (January 5 th) morning. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual life shine upon her. May she rest in peace! Amen. Kindly include in your prayers her grieving family! Her funeral was Saturday, January 11th here at Saint Michaels. As we end this Christmas season with the Baptism of our Lord Jesus, we also take down our Christmas decorations. We thank again our Arts and Environments committee especially to Nancy Hofer and Faith Paoni and all those who helped put up this decoration, including Mary Ann Duling for putting up that outdoor manger in front of the church. If you could also help in taking them down after our 10AM mass, please stay after the mass or come around 11am. God bless you all! Fr. Roger

Baptism: You are Forever Changed! This week, the Readings focus on Jesus baptism which brought to my mind a Last Week July 2013 to date Sunday a few years ago when Fr. Sam Pinkerton filled in here at St. Josephs. I Contributions $2,375.00 $72,124.35 came to know him when the Bishop sent him to Our Lady of Lourdes at Pittsburg Children's Offering $8.00 $453.18 soon after his ordination in 1995. He has always been an enthusiastic priest with strong beliefs in the Church and its teachings. At present, he is pastor at St. AnthoExpenses-Dec $7,466.67 $64,343.95 nys at Garden Plain, a small city just west of Wichita. Over/ (Under) $8,233.58 In his St. Joseph homily that day on baptism, he began with, Baptism isnt just something nice to do. Its more than having the grandparents come or getting the Saint Michaels Upcoming Events videocamera out! Its more than a Christening. We are FOREVER CHANGED by it, permanently marked as one of Gods own. We cannot be unbaptized or Finance Council Parish Council rebaptized. Once done, it is done forever. The waters of baptism are lifegiving Tony Stonerock-Chair Dale Coomes-Chair for us; they unite us with Christ. As Jesus came right out of the water and began TBA TBA teaching and preaching, we, too, start. Were NOT automatically saved. We must struggle against sin all of our lives. We know God in Jesus will help us to get up Rosary Altar Society Knights of Columbus again and again. Next meeting, TBA 1st Tuesday of Month, 7pm I picked up on the part where he quoted Matthew, saying that Jesus came DIAt 6:30pm in the Hall. St. Michael Parish Hall RECTLY out of the water. Out of the water comes life. Without water, there is NO LIFE because everything that is alive needs water to live and thats probably Helping Hands Daughters of Isabella why Christ chose water as the sign of our entrance into the Christian life. Water is Need help or want to volunteer, Call Marilyn Bradshaw, also a sign of cleansing; we wash everything, including ourselves, with water. Call Carrie Smith, 724-6684 724-7133 Water, then, signifies the washing away of the dirt of sin. Infant baptism is often brought up when baptism is discussed. The New Testament isnt explicit on it. That Man in You Friday mornings at 6am However, Msgr. William Carr, Wichita, has said on the subject, Baptism is spoken of as a birth, and one is born as an infant. In Acts of the Apostles, it speaks of the baptism of households and we can assume that there were children in these households. Poinsettias Fr. John Reinkemeyer, one of our former pastors here at St. Josephs, taught that If you would like to purchase a poinsettia for a loved one, to be placed in the Church, you may do so by dropping off $10 and the ones BAPTISMAL DAY was more important than his actual birthday. To explain, he stated, As people of faith, we know that our birthday signifies our beloved ones name by the parish office. ginnings here on earth, but our baptismal day marks the date when we became a member of Christs Body, the Church, an heir of heaven, and the recipient of Pictures Gods grace with the removal of original sin. Its easy to understand why Fr. We are looking for pictures that were taken at various parish John said this, for no birthday gift could top what we receive at our baptism, functions over the past 50 years, to display in the parish hall whether we are converts or born Catholics. Do you know the month and day of throughout the anniversary year. If you have any pictures that your baptism? If not, this would be a good time to look into it while the new year you would like to share, please drop them by the parish office or is young.

Is it Realistic to Model Our Family After the Holy Family? A couple weeks ago, the Mass and Readings involved wholesome family life, based on the Holy Family of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. For many of us, this family seems ideal and we have trouble identifying with them. After all, two saints and the Son of God! Please! We find it too much to use them as a measuring stick, but we forget that they had daily lives to live with problems to face, just as we do. I recall former pastor, Fr. Donald Thissens, take on the holy family one year: Joseph was approached by an Angel to go to Egypt with his family. Now think about it! The Angel was asking them to become homeless, refugees. But Joseph and Mary had a quality that many good Christians share today and that was OBEDIENCE. What if Joseph had said No? He could have. He was going to divorce her privately, but the Angel told him to marry her. He did and later took his family to Egypt as the Angel had advised. Upon arrival, they found a place to live, such as it was, and Joseph worked daily to provide food and shelter, just as we do! What if Mary had said No? God doesnt violate our free will. He gave it to us. She knew by saying Yes, she put her life on the line because the law prescribed death in such situations. Mary and Joseph found strength in each other to form and keep their family strong. They did it through OBEDIENCE to Gods will. They TRUSTED in Him. Many families today are broken in some way and repair can only come with a shared faith in God and in each other. The way back is through mutual prayer and a restored respect for each other and the Churchs teachings, Fr. Thissen concluded. He got it right. Husbands and wives must work daily to maintain their marriages, teach solid values to their children, and model acceptable behaviour through their actions. These simple tips can insure success in marriage and children who will develop into responsible adults. Bishop Fulton Sheen once wrote, You dont seek happiness; it comes to you through doing good things. One last note - I received news from Fr. Lawrence Carney, our former pastor, last week. He is located at the present time about 30 miles north of Kansas City as Chaplain for the Benedictines of Mary. He also shares his time with the priest at nearby St. Patricks parish in St. Joseph, MO. Articles by Marcel Normand
