EEE212 - Electric Circuit Theory Tutorial-7 (Three Phase AC Circuits) 1.

Find the symmetrical components of the unbalanced system of the following voltages 1 0 , 3 120 and 2 90 V. 2. The line currents in amperes for phase a, b and c is respectively 500 + 150j, 100 60j and -300 + 600j. Find the symmetrical components of current. 3. Assume that the two balanced loads in Figure 1 are supplied by an 840 V rms, 60 Hz line. Load 1 is Y connected with 30 + 40j per phase, while load 2 is a balanced three-phase motor drawing 48 kW at a power factor of 0.8 lagging. Assuming the abc sequence, calculate: a. The complex power absorbed by the combined load b. The kVAR rating of each of the three capacitors connected in parallel with the load to raise the power factor to unity, and c. The current drawn from the supply at unity power factor condition.

Figure 1 4. For a Y- connected load, the time domain expression for three line to neutral voltages at the terminals are: van(t) = 150 cos (t + 32) V vbn(t) = 150 sin (t + 2) V vcn(t) = 150 cos (t + 152) V Determine the phase sequence of the above voltages and also writ the time-domain expressions for the line to line voltages vAB, vCB and vAC. 5. A three phase balanced system with a line voltage of 202 V rms feeds a delta connected load with Zp = 25 60 . a. Find the line currents. b. Determine the total power supplied to the load using two wattmeters connected to the A and C lines. 6. A balanced three phase source with VL = 240 V rms is supplying 8 kVA at 0.6 power factor lagging to two wye connected parallel loads. If one load draws 3kW at unity power factor, calculate the impedance per phase of the second load.

7. As shown in Figure 2, a three phase four wire line with a phase voltage of 120 V rms and positive phase sequence supplies a balanced motor load at 260 kVA at 0.85 pf lagging. The motor load is connected to three main lines marked a, b, and c. In addition, incandescent lamps (unity pf) are connected as follows: 24 kW from line a to neutral, 15 kW from line b to neutral and 9 kW from line c to neutral. a. If three wattmeters are arranged to measure the power in each line with ends of the potential coil connected to neutral line, calculate the reading of each meter. b. Find the magnitude of current in the neutral line.

Figure 2 8. A professional centre is supplied by a balanced three phase source. The centre has four balanced three phase loads as follows: Load 1: 150 kVA at 0.8 pf leading Load 2: 100 kW at unity pf Load 3: 200 kVA at 0.6 pf lagging Load 4: 80 kW and 90 kVAR (inductive) If the line impedance is 0.02 + 0.05j per phase and the line voltage at the load is 480 V, find the magnitude of the line voltage at the source. 9. Find the line currents Ia, Ib and Ic in the three phase network of Figure 3. Take Z = 12 15j , ZY = 4 + 6j and Zl = 2 .

10. Derive an expression for the three phase complex power consumed by the three phase load, in a three phase system, in terms of symmetrical components. 11. A commercially available three-phase induction motor operates at full load of 120 hp at 95% efficiency at a lagging power factor of 0.707. The motor is connected in parallel to a 80kW balanced three phase heater at unity power factor. If the magnitude of the line voltage is 480 V, calculate the line current. (Hint: 120 hp is the output power of the motor. Therefore i/p power = 3VLIL Cos = (o/p power)/(Efficiency) ) ************************
