Q1. The simple magnetic circuit shown has a cross-sectional area of 50 cm2 and mean
length of 2 m. The relative permeability of the core is 100. The coil has 250 turns and
the flux produced is 100 μWb.

(3.18*106A/Wb, 1.27A)

Find:

(a) Reluctance of the magnetic circuit

(b) Current flowing through the coil 50 sq. cm N=250 l=2m ɸ=100μWb iron core mean
length

Q2.A solenoid relay shown below is operated from a 110 V DC supply and the 6000-
turn coil resistance is 6.5 kΩ. The core diameter of the relay is 25 mm and the gap
length is 1.5 mm, the armature being stationary. The gap faces may be taken as parallel
and the permeability of the
ferromagnetic parts as very high. 25mm
Estimate: mmm

Q3. The air gap in a magnetic circuit is 1.5 mm long and 2500 mm2 in cross-sectional
area. Calculate (a) The reluctance of the air gap (b) The mmf required to set up a flux of
800 μWb in the air gap. (4.77*105A/Wb, 382.5A)

Q4. A mild steel (relative permeability of 400) ring having a cross-sectional area of 500
mm2and a mean circumference of 400 mm has a coil of 200 turns wound uniformly
around it. Calculate(a) The reluctance of the ring (b) The current required to produce a
flux of 800 μWb in the ring.

Q5. A rectangular shaped core is made of mild steel (relative permeability of 940) plates
15 mm ×20 mm cross-section. The mean length of the magnetic path is 18 cm. The
exciting coil has 300 turns with a current of 0.7 A flowing through it. Calculate:

(a) Magneto-motive force

(b) (b) Flux density
(c) (c) Reluctance
(d) (d) Magnetic flux

Q6A mild steel ring has a radius of 50 mm and a cross-sectional area of 400 mm2. A
current of 0.5 A flows in a coil wound uniformly around the ring and the flux produced
is 0.1 mWb. If the relative permeability at this value of current is 200 find:

(a) the reluctance of the mild steel (3.125 × 106=H)

(b) the number of turns on the coil. (625 turns)

Q7A closed magnetic circuit of cast steel contains a 6 cm long path of cross-sectional
area 1 cm2 and a 2 cm path of cross-sectional area 0.5 cm2. A coil of 200 turns is wound
around the 6 cm length of the circuit and a current of 0.4 A flows. Determine the flux
density in the 2 cm path, if the relative permeability of the cast steel is 750. (1.51 T)

Q8A silicon iron ring of cross-sectional area 5 cm2 has a radial air gap of 2 mm cut into
it. If the mean length of the silicon iron path is 40 cm, calculate the magnetomotive
force to produce a flux of 0.7 mWb. (2888 A)

A coil of 300 turns is wound uniformly on a ring of non-magnetic material. The ring has
a mean circumference of 40 cm and a uniform cross-sectional area of 4 cm2. If the
current in the coil is 5 A. calculate : (a) the magnetic field strength (3750 A/m) , (b) the
flux density. (4.712 mT) and (c) the total magnetic flux in the ring. (1.885 mWb)
