This specification outlines the requirements for carbon steel plates intended for welded pressure vessels operating at moderate and lower temperatures. It specifies the following key points:
- The steel plates must conform to chemical composition and mechanical property requirements, including tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation.
- Plates are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition but may be ordered normalized or stress relieved.
- The specification references other ASTM standards for general steel requirements, nondestructive testing methods, and optional supplementary tests that can be specified.
- Plates up to 1 inch thick are covered, and must meet ultrasound examination standards to ensure soundness. Supplementary tests for properties like impact strength or vacuum treatment can also be

MODERATE AND LOWER TEMPERATURE SERVICE SA-612/SA-612M (Identical with ASTM Specication A 612/A 612M-90.) 1. Scope 1.1 This specication covers killed carbon-manga- nese-silicon steel plates intended for welded pressure vessels in service at moderate and lower temperatures. 1.2 The maximum thickness of plates supplied under this specication is 1 in. [25 mm]. 1.3 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specication. 2. Referenced Documents 2.1 ASTM Standards: A 20/A 20M Specication for General Requirements for Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels A 435/A 435M Specication for Straight-Beam Ultra- sonic Examination of Steel Plates A 577/A 577M Specication for Ultrasonic Angle-Beam Examination of Steel Plates A 578/A 578M Specication for Straight-Beam Ultra- sonic Examination of Plain and Clad Steel Plates for Special Applications 1097 3. General Requirements and Ordering Information 3.1 Material supplied to this material specication shall conform to Specication A 20/A 20M. These requirements outline the testing and retesting methods and procedures, permissible variations in dimensions and weight, quality and repair of defects, marking, loading, etc. 3.2 Specication A 20/A 20M also establishes the rules for the ordering information that should be com- plied with when purchasing material to this specication. 3.3 In addition to the basic requirements of this specication, certain supplementary requirements are available when additional control, testing, or examina- tion is required to meet end use requirements. These include: 3.3.1 Vacuum treatment, 3.3.2 Additional or special tension testing, 3.3.3 Impact testing, and 3.3.4 Nondestructive examination. 3.4 The purchaser is referred to the listed supplemen- tary requirements in this specication and to the detailed requirements in Specication A 20/A 20M. 3.5 If the requirements of this specication are in conict with the requirements of Specication A 20/ A 20M, the requirements of this specication shall prevail. 98 SA-612/SA-612M 1998 SECTION II 4. Manufacture 4.1 Steelmaking Practice The steel shall be killed and shall conform to the ne austenitic grain size requirement of Specication A 20/A 20M. 5. Heat Treatment 5.1 Plates are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition. Plates may be ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both. 6. Chemical Requirements 6.1 The steel shall conform to the requirements as to chemical composition shown in Table 1 unless otherwise modied in accordance with Supplementary Requirement S17, Vacuum Carbon-Deoxidized Steel, in Specication A 20/A 20M. 7. Mechanical Requirements 7.1 Tension Test Requirements The material as represented by the tension test specimens shall conform to the requirements shown in Table 2. 1098 PART A FERROUS MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS SA-612/SA-612M TABLE 1 98 CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS Composition, % Thickness Over 0.750 0.750 in. to 1 in.
