A SUBSTATION AUTOMATION SOLUTION

FOR REAL-TIME MONITORING

AND EVENT RECORDING
The BiTRONICS 70 Series Measurement System is
a substation automation solution designed to
satisfy the real-time monitoring and event
recording needs of AC network operators.
The BiTRONICS 70 Series Measurement System
consists of four component types. These
components form a real-time monitoring and event
recording system for use in high voltage AC
substations. The component types are monitoring
and recording IEDs, detached displays, firmware,
and software.
BITRONICS 70 SERIES
MEASUREMENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS
> COMPONENT 1: 70 Series Monitoring and Recording IEDs
Each Monitoring and Recording IED has pre-arranged channel inputs for different
substation elements - feeder, transformer, single bus, and dual bus.
There are two families:
The M57x Compact Family design optimizes lower prices for lesser options -
options are built-in at time of order.
The M87x Modular Family design has a wider operating frequency range and
allows many more options to be added at any time.
> COMPONENT 2: 70D Family of Displays
The 70D displays give a choice for flush or surface switchboard mounting
remotely from 70 Series IEDs.
> COMPONENT 3: 70 Series Firmware
70 Series Firmware is imbedded in all 70 Series IEDs to support functions
typically found in :
Disturbance Recorders
SOE Recorders
Trend Recorders
Revenue Meters
Power Quality Monitors
AC Switchboard Meters
SCADA Transducers
> COMPONENT 4: 70 Series Software
70 Series Software is an integrated set of PC-based programs to facilitate
implementation and operation of the 70 Series Measurement System.
Customer benefits
Preempt catastrophic
events.
Lower investigative
expenses.
Reduce your automation
investment.
Improve Security.
Lower life-cycle costs.
Protect your investment.

IMPROVE SECURITY OF
OPERATION BY DESIGN:
>> Ensure enterprise-wide retrieval of event files
without exposing relay IEDs to security issues.
Using separate IEDs for monitoring and recording
insures limited access by foreign intruders to the
safety and protection systems as well as verifying
the protection system operation.
>> If the relay doesn't operate, the cause may never
be known, so an independent IED is essential.
>> The common task of setting triggers
can be done without the re-commissioning
of the relay.
70 SERIES FIRMWARE
The 70 Series Firmware, common to all of the 70
Series IEDs, allows the IEDs to satisfy a number of
different applications. The firmware provides the
following functions:
6 simultaneous recorders
More than 2000 measurements covering 2 full buses
on some models
Instantaneous, Demands, Harmonics to 63rd for Line
Current, Bus Voltage L-N, L-L
Instantaneous, Demands, Real, Reactive, Apparent
for Bus Power, total, per
Bus 1 - Bus 2 Voltage Phase Angle and Slip
Frequency per
Energy monitoring with accuracy as high as 0.2%
Multiple ports & protocols
DNP, Modbus, Serial or UDP/TCP, UCA (including
GOOSE messaging), FTP, Telnet, Modbus Plus
Up to 15 remote displays
Up to 120 triggers, each of which can initiate
any or all recorders
Accepts IRIG-B signal for time
synchronization

Example of Voltage Disturbance
Example of Frequency Disturbance
Each 70 Series IED records and saves the events and
trends based on user configured criteria. This criteria
may include conditions associated with all the
electrical parameters of the IED. This criteria can also
include conditions observed by other IEDs connected
on the same Local Area Network (LAN).
The following gives example graphics derived from the
6 recorder files.
> Recorders 1 & 2 - Disturbance
Voltage and frequency disturbances
Two independent disturbance recorders
Catch sags and swells in voltage supply
Record frequency deviations
Enough memory to store more than 8000 events
PREEMPT CATASTROPHIC EVENTS
BY NEVER MISSING
A DISTURBANCE:
>> Enable utility operation personnel to never miss the
varying length of disturbances on an AC network
by employing high fidelity multi-mode recorders
with megabytes of non-volatile memory.
>> This includes disturbances such as faults, voltage
sags and swells, frequency deviations and power
swings.
IRIG-B converter permits
modulated IRIG-B signal to
be used when attached to
M87x serial port 2, 3 or 4.
> Recorder 3 & 4 - WaveForm
Record waveform of all signals on any disturbance
Oscillography recording at 128 samples per cycle
Adequate resolution to record any protection scheme
miss-operation or nuisance tripping
Enterprise-wide retrieval of event files without expo-
sing relay IEDs to security issues
Record only the channels you want divided among
two recorders
Set event triggers without the re-commissioning
relays
Select from three triggering modes with hysteresis
Linear recording up to 100 amp symmetrical faults
Enough memory to store more than 1700 events
> Recorder 5 - Trend
Forecast load demand and monitor voltage profile
Trend recorder
Record system planning and load profiling data for
weeks
Monitor voltage or other parameter performance for
weeks
Enough memory to store more than 400 days of trend
data

direct more detailed analysis of disturbance and
waveform records
> Recorder 6 - Sequence of Events
Record events in the order they happened
Sequence of events recorder
Quickly reconstruct the cause and effect of cascading
operations

USE SUBSTATION LANS TO REDUCE
YOUR AUTOMATION INVESTMENT:
>> Lower your initial investment by employing a LAN-based IED family
that permits the initial purchase of just what you need for the current
budgeted project but allows for easy expansion in the future.
>> Reduce investment further by employing switchyard grade IEDs
that allow physical distribution into the yards, which provides
further wiring cost savings.
>> Lower integration costs by incorporating this technology into
an e-terra or PACiS automaton solution from AREVA T&D.
