To reach your target, do the following tasks:

Step 3
Step 1
of learners from different levels (preschool, elementary, and high school).
Validate your observation by interviewing the learners.

Step 2

Step 4

Compare them in terms of their interests and needs.

Describe each of the learners based on your observation.

My Tools

Use the activity form provided for you to document your observations.

AN OBSERVATION GUIDE FOR THE LEARNERS

CHARACTERISTICS
Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on
the provided space. Your teacher may also recommend another observation checklist
if a more detailed observation is preferred.

Physical

1. Observe their gross motor skills. How they carry themselves. How they move, walk, run go
up the stairs, etc.
2. Are gross movements clumsy or deliberate/smooth?
3. How about their fine motor skills? Writing, drawing, etc.

Social

1. Describe how they interact with teachers and other adults.

2. Note how they also interact with peers. What do they talk about? What are their concerns?

Emotional

1. Describe the emotional disposition or temperament of the learners. (happy, sad, easily
cries, mood-shifts)
2. How do they express their wants/needs? Can they wait?
3. How do they handle frustrations?
4. Describe their level of confidence as shown in their behavior. Are they self-conscious?

Cognitive

1. Describe their ability to use words to communicate their ideas. Note their language
proficiency.
2. Describe how they figure out things. Do they comprehend easily? Look for evidence of
their thinking skills.

3. Were their opportunities for problem solving? Describe how did they showed problem
solving abilities.

LEARNERS DEVELOPMENT MATRIX

Record the data you gathered about the learners characteristics and needs in this matrix.
This will allow you to compare the characteristics and needs of learners at different levels. The
items under each domain are by no means exhaustive. These are just sample indicators. You
may add other aspects which you may have observed.

Mostly stubborn, shows

their emotions when
they feel like crying,
laughing out loud when
they are happy. Express
emotions freely, say
things without proper
thinking. Depends on
teachers to ease their
feelings.

Stubborn but behaves

when scolded or dealt
well with the teacher.
Express feelings but
with limitations.
Emotions are
expressed on their
closest friends.

They could hide their

feelings, from being
happy to sad (mood

of crying and showing
emotions in public.

Simple words can be

My Analysis

Write the most salient developmental characteristics of the learners you observed. Based
on these characteristics, think of implications for the teacher.
Example:
Salient
Characteristics

Age range of Learners
Observed __3-4__

Implications to the TeachingLearning Process

Therefore, the teacher should

remember to use music and
movement activities not just in PE but
in all subject areas.

Therefore, teachers should not expect

preschoolers to stay seated for a long
period of time.

Write your own observation here.

Implications to the TeachingLearning Process

Therefore, the teacher should use

visual aids and instructional materials
that would catch their attention like
pictures, drawings that are colorful
and if possible, videos/film showing.

Teachers should impose rules and

guidelines to make teaching-learning
process effective. Discipline of the
students especially in their study
habits should be imposed to develop
good attitude values.

Therefore, teachers should act and

behave accordingly for they will be
the model of the students in the
development of right attitudes and
values.

My Reflections
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall in your own experiences when you
were their age? What similarities or differences do you have with the learners you
observed?
During the observation period, while I am observing the learners I did
recall of my experiences when I was at their age. Although I was not able to
recall all it served as a lesson for me. I am also fond of playing of new games,
keep on running and sometimes talking with my seatmates. I became one of the
athletic players on my elementary year. But, I differ from them, because I focus
on my studies , one of my aim on my high school year was to go to section 1,
and Im not ashamed to show my talents and actively participating in dance
group. My experience that time was enjoyable like the learners do right now.

2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did she/he help
or not help you with your needs (physical, emotional, social, and cognitive)? How did it
affect you?

The teacher that I could not forget s Maam Crispina Librero, she is my
teacher on my elementary years. I idolized her for her kindness, humility and
have a sense of humor. She was very talented and motivates me to show my
talents in dancing. Her lessons and values are inculcated in our hearts, be true
to our selves, and she was one of my inspirations on being a teacher someday.
And she always says that show and prove to everybody who you are and what
you are and your achievements.
3. Share your insights here.
In this observation I have learned that Teaching is both a vocation and a
mission and appreciation of effort is important. Responding to Gods call is not a
simple task and gets even harder when you will do the mission of being the
catalyst for change. Yet, touching ones life is priceless and molding them into
the best of what can be is the hardest job, but rewarding. Equality and fairness
in class must prevail. The teacher must be concern not just to a few but to all
her students. And lastly, encouragement must be present at all times in a class
setting.

My Portfolio
Which is your favorite theory of development? How can this guide you as a future teacher?
Clip some readings about this theory and paste them here.

My favorite theory of development is Piagets Theory of cognitive

development because it gives a full detail of development from infancy to
adolescence, wherein it has four stages, the sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete-operational, and formal operational stage.
As a
prospective teacher someday, I will use this theory of development as my guide
in preparing the appropriate and necessary strategies and materials for
learners. This theory also suggests in giving students opportunities in exploring
many hypothetical questions wherein it requires them to think comprehensively.

AN OBSERVATION GUIDE FOR THE LEARNERS

CHARACTERISTICS
Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the
provided space.
1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.
2. How many boys are there? How many girls?
3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
4. Can the learners already work independently?
5. Describe their span of attention.
6. Look into their listening skills and ability to concentrate.

Name of the School:

UNION NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Observed :
GRADE 7C
Location of the School
STO. DOMINGO, CALABANGA, CAMARINES SUR
Date of Visit
JANUARY 22, 2015
As I observed in the class of Mr. Cario, that the age of the learners does not
vary about their behavior and characteristics even though their ages ranging from 1113 years old. The reason behind this is that there are students who are very
participative and cooperative in the class while other students didnt collaborate
actively.
In the classroom of Mr. Cario that I have observed, the number of boys is
greater than the number of girls and with this students can move freely.
When it comes to their behavior, some of them can already managed their own
behavior wherein they show a total self-discipline, but there are some who acted like a
small children thats why sometimes they destruct their classmates attention.
Yes, the learners can work independently and they can handle and accomplished
task by their own because some of them belongs to fast learners class but they need
to be guided.
Speaking of students span of attention, all of them have a wide span of
attention but it depends on how the teacher motivates the whole class.
When it comes to their listening skills and ability to concentrate, most of them
tend to listen as soon as the class started, most of them pay attention and they
concentrate for them to be active when it comes to their recitation.

AN OBSERVATION GUIDE FOR THE CLASSROOM

VISIT
Be guided by these questions as you do your observation of the classroom
management. It is also good to ask the teacher for additional information so you can
verify your observation. Write your notes below; and then organize your data in the
table that follows.
1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books,
students belongings, supplies, etc.)?
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room?
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules?
4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (Prayer, attendance, assignment of
monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement?
6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

7. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the teacher do? (behavior
strategies)
8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)

Observation Notes:

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT MATRIX

Aspect of Classroom
Management
1. Specific Areas in the
Classroom

Description
This area is clean,
spacious and conducive
for learning

Effect on the Learners

(to be filled up after you answer the
analysis questions)
The student can learn and acquire
knowledge appropriately.

Classroom policy is posted

in the wall of the
classroom.

The students will be reminded on their

rules and regulations.

The teacher here starts

the class with a simple
quotation as motivation.

The students will not be bored and they

will be motivated or encouraged to
learn.

This done first by an

opening prayer followed
by checking of attendance
and proceed to the lesson
to be discussed.

It is good for the learners because they

could be trained to follow their daily
routines in their future life.

5. Seating Arrangement

Seating arrangement is
arranged alphabetically.

It will be good because they would be

comfortable.

6. Handling
misbehavior/off-task
behavior

The teacher gives

disciplinary action
according to the mistake
done by the student.

The students will behave as a response

to the disciplinary actions.

7. Reinforcement of
Positive Behavior

The teacher gives honor

and recognizes the
learner who shows
positive behavior in class.

The student will strive to study hard and

acted positively to gain such honor.

2. Classroom Rules

3. Classroom Procedures

4. Daily Routines

My Analysis
1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners behavior?
Through classroom organization and routines, pupils/ students are actively
participate in the classroom discussions. The lesson plan is carefully prepared
such that all discussion is directed towards the achievement of its objectives
which students could reach the goals of the teaching-learning process.
2. What should the teacher have in mind when he/she designs the classroom organization
and routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?
I think the teacher should bear in mind that daily organization and routines depend on
the age of the learners, and also to their way of practicing it daily. And the teacher should
always consider that students possessed different actions, characteristics, behavior and
intelligence due to their individual differences. Behaviorist theory should be consider, that
the teachers role is to established rules and procedures and to communicate these rules
clearly to students to implement appropriate reward and punishment for the compliance of
the rules.
3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? in
motivating students? Why were they effective?

In my own opinion, it is very effective when the teacher adapt the collaborative
teaching when the discussion is going on. There should also have reinforcement upon the
students cooperation. These are all effective because if there would be collaborative
teaching, there would also be interaction, and when there is interaction the students can
express their ideas freely.

My Reflections
1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade/year level do you
see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?
As I see myself teaching grade seven students, I will do the same thing as
what I have observed, I will do the same routines which are very applicable. The
routines that I should used is first, I will start my class with an class routine (by
picking up some dirts and arranging their chairs), second, opening prayer,
third, checking of their attendance but I would prefer to use seat plan, forth, I
will let my students act/ role play or game for motivation, fifth, checking of
assignments for recalling the previous lesson then I will proceed to my class
discussion of new lesson.
2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose
these rules?
The following are the rules that I want to implement in my class are:
o Talking while the teacher is discussing is not allowed.
o Both male and female students must observed proper hygiene and
neatness at all times.
o Avoid loitering during class hours.
o Ask permission before leaving the classroom.
o Respect yourself, others and environment.
o Always maintain the cleanliness of the classroom before and after
the class .
I would choose these rules because they are observable and achievable
that would prevent the students from misbehaving. And I want to have a
harmonious classroom that has peace, unity, and order between me and my
future students.
3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?
The students should be involved in making the class rules and regulations
for the reason that they should be aware of the rules and regulation so that
there would be no complaints about the sanctions that they may commit when
they violate the rules and regulations. The students discipline should start from
them in following rules and regulations.

My Portfolio
Include her picture of the classroom/s you observed. Write descriptions/ annotation
about you observed in each photo.

My Map

The learners individual differences and the type of interaction they bring surely affect the
quality of teaching and learning. This episode is about observing and gathering data to find out
how student diversity affects learning.
To reach your target, do the following tasks:
Step 1. Observe a class in different parts of a
school day. (beginning of the day, class time, recess,
etc.)

Step 2. Describe the characteristics of the learners

in terms of age, gender, and social and cultural
diversity.

Step 3. Describe the interaction that transpires

inside and outside the classroom.

Step 4. Interview your Resource Teacher about the

principles and practices that she uses in dealing with
diversity in the classroom.

Step 5. Analyze the impact of individual differences

on learners interaction

My Tools
Use the activity form provided for you to document your observation.

AN OBSERVATION GUIDE FOR THE CLASSROOM

VISIT
Read the following carefully before you begin to observe. Then write your
observation report on the space provided on the next page.
1. Find out the number of students. Gather data as to their ages, gender, racial group,
religious and ethnic backgrounds.
During class:
1. How much interaction is there in the classroom? Describe how the students interact with
one another and with the teacher. Are there groups that interact more with the teacher
than others.
2. Observe the learners seated at the back and the front part of the room. Do they behave
and interact differently?
3. Describe the relationship among the learners. Do the learners cooperate with or complete
against each other?
4. Which students participate actively? Which students ask for most help?
5. When a student is called and cannot answer the teachers question, do the classmates try
to help him? Or do they raise their hands so that the teachers will call them instead?
Outside class:
1. How do the students group themselves outside class? Homogenously, by age? by gender?
by racial or ethnic groups? Or are the students in mixed social groupings? If so, describe
the groupings.
2. Describe how the learners interact with each other. What do they talk about?

beliefs but then they respect each other, just like when they pray for those who
are not catholic they just bow their heads and they do not have to do the sign of
the cross.
Since they is only a few numbers of pupils. All of them participate in the
class. Each of them is called to answer the questions or do the board-work
exercises especially in math subject. Their seating arrangement does not affect
their learning since they are only few in numbers and the teacher could
accommodate and give attention to them. There are really good students who
excel and answer the questions correctly. But there are instances that a certain
pupil could not give the answer correctly due to frequent absences. Other pupils
will raise their hands to help him. In a group activity, each group has their own
leader and reporter, while the members share their ideas to compete with other
group.
Outside the class, the pupils play with each other. They run, walk and move
freely. They like to talk about their favorite artists in the movie, or any soap
operas in television, the places they want to go and favorite sports or anime

My Analysis
1. Identify the persons who play key roles in the relationships and interactions in the
classroom. What the roles do they play? Is there somebody who appears to be the leader,
a mascot /joker ,an attention ,seeker ,a little teacher, a doubter ,a pessimist ?

In a classroom, pupils differ from each other in their skills, innate talents and
abilities. There are pupils that plays as a leader, a little joker that makes all
his classmates laugh, an attention seeker because she likes to sing and she
has a beautiful voice. There is also a little teacher not to do bad things. In
each role they play in the relationship and interactions in the classroom, it
only shows that they have different characteristics and interests.
2. Are students coming from the minority group accepted or rejected by the others? How is
this shown?

The students were of different cultures since each family has a culture of their
own. Some pupils who belonged to minority group were still accepted by their
classmates. At their age, they just want to have fun and play together because
they respect each other despite their differences in attitudes, skills, socioeconomic status and abilities. The teacher also shows that they are accepted
and they belong in the class by making her classroom a perfect place to be.
3. How does the teacher influence the class interaction considering the individual differences
of the students?

The teacher influences the class interaction by encouraging learners to share

their personal experiences through sharing to the class or by groups, students
will be made to realize that they have something in common with the rest
though

they

possess

some

differences.

Another

way

is

using

varied

instructional methods to accommodate student diversity.

What

factors

influence

the

grouping

of

learners

outside

the

classroom?

The factors that bring about the grouping of learners outside the classroom
are; socio-economic status, thinking/learning styles and exceptionalities.

MY REFLECTIONS
1. How did you feel being in that classroom? Did you feel a sense of oneness or unity among
the learners and between the teacher and the learners?

I feel glad and comfortable in observing that classroom since the teacher
acknowledge our presence and the students very polite to us. I could feel that
the teacher is well respected by her pupils because they listen attentively and
participate during discussions. In that way, I can sense the oneness among
the students and the teacher.
2. In the future, how would you want the learners in your classroom to interact? How will you
make this happen?

3. I want my learners in the future to be active learners. I could make this

happen by imposing rules and regulations that would discipline my pupils to

make them behave in the class that provide a positive classroom atmosphere.
Through good classroom management and teaching strategies that would
consider student diversity, I could effectively make my pupils and competitive
learners.

My Portfolio
Post a collection of quotations advocating for celebrating diversity in the classrooms. Using
these quotations, explain how you will encourage all learners, regardless of religious, ethnic or
racial background to interact and participate well.
