Episode 2

LEARNERS CHARACTERISTICS AND NEEDS

Name of FS Student: Kyla Marie P. Pastoral
Course: BSED Mathematics
Resource Teacher: Mr.Arnel L.Poja

Year & Section: 2-1

Signature _____________________

Cooperating School: Caruhatan National High School

Your Target
At the end of this activity, you will gain competence in differentiating the
characteristics and needs of learners from different developmental levels.

Your Map
To reach your target, do the following tasks:

Step 1
Observe 3 groups of learners
from different levels
(preschool, elementary, and
high school)
Step 2
Describe each of the learners
based on your observations

Step 3
Validate your observation
by interviewing the
learners.
Step 4
Compare them in terms of
their interests and needs.

Your
Tools

Use the activity form provided for you to document your observations.

An Observation Guide for the CLASSROOM VISIT

Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report
on the provided space. Your teacher may also recommend another observation
checklist if a more detailed observation is preferred.
Physical
1. Observe their gross motor skills. How they carry themselves? How they move,
walk, run, go up the stairs, etc.?
2. Are gross movements clumsy or deliberate/smooth?
3. How about their fine motor skills? Writing, drawing, etc.
Social
1. Describe how they interact with teachers and other adults.
2. Note how they also interact with peers. What do they talk about? What are their
concerns?
Emotional
1. Describe the emotional disposition or temperament of the learners. (happy, sad,
easily cries, mood-shifts)
2. How do they express their wants/needs? Can they wait?
3. How do they handle frustrations?
4. Describe their level of confidence as shown in their behaviour. Are they selfconscious?
Cognitive
1. Describe their ability to use words to communicate their ideas. Note: their
language proficiency.
2. Describe how they figure out things. Do they comprehend easily? Look for
evidence of their thinking skills.
3. Where there opportunities for problem solving? Describe how did they show
problem solving abilities

Learners Development Matrix

Record the data you gathered about the learners characteristics and needs in this
matrix. This will allow you to compare the characteristics and needs of learners at

different levels. The items under each domain are by no means exhaustive. These are just
sample indicators. You may add other aspects which you may have observed.

Their actions are
matured enough but
sometimes they are
clumsy and when some
students do wrong or
say something wrong
they laugh and create a
noise.
They listen to their
teacher when he/she
discussing a lesson.
They talk to their
classmates in a nice way
but somehow they say
bad words and it is not a
good habit.
They let the teacher on
what he/she say and for
them it is correct.
They sat quietly when a

that is not good.

Your Analysis

Some students are

actively participating in
the class.
They can think of an
answer on what their
teacher is asking but
they have difficulties on
how they deliver their
ideas.

Write the most salient developmental characteristics of the learners you observed.
Based on these child characteristics, think of implications for the teacher.
Example:

Salient Characteristics

Preschool

Preschoolers like to move

around a lot.

Implications to the
Teaching-Learning
Process

Therefore, the teacher

should remember to use
music and movement
activities not just in PE but
in all subject areas.
Therefore, teachers should
not expect pre-schoolers to
stay seated for a long period
of time.

Implications to the TeachingLearning Process

High School
Age Range of Learners
observed 14-15

They are not noisy when it

comes to recitation because
they are afraid to be called by
the teacher to answer some
questions.

Therefore, teachers should not expect that

his/her students will raise their hands to
answer his/her question.

Your Reflections
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your own experiences when
you were their age? What similarities or differences do you have with the learners
you
observed?
Yes, I recall my past experience when I was in high school. I imagine myself
quietly listening to my teacher while he/she discussing our lesson. And when it
comes to recitation most of the time I raise my hands to answer but somehow I
quietly listen to my classmates on what they are saying.
2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did
she/he help or not help you with your needs (physical, emotional, social, and
cognitive)?
How
did
it
affect
you?
My former adviser when I was Grade 5 student, she builds my confidence because
back when I grade 5, Im afraid of doing some things because my instinct my
work is not okay and it will fail. She helps me to improve myself, my language
proficiency, my skills, etc. She didnt leave me when I need a family to lean on,
she support me in every competitions that I join. And here I am taking a BSEDMathematics to prove that I can do more things in life.
3. Which is your favourite theory of development? How can this guide you as a
future
teacher?
Social Influences on Learning because it is more effective to use in your students
to have a interaction with you as a teacher and they have interaction with their
classmates and sharing their thoughts and have a good relationship in your
classroom.
4. Share
your
other
insights
here.
As a teacher, I need to be approachable and available in all times inside or outside
the school campus. Be aware of what your students problems and help them to
resolve it. Available to lean on to cheer up your students.
