Into how many groups can be divide what we see around us?
Based from the table, what is the basis of your classification?
Where would you place yourself in the grouping? Why?
Where would you place air and food in the grouping? Why?
Do you think life is possible if there were those listed in the column without life?
Give the reason for your answer.
Take note:
The living components are also called biotic components; while the living
components are called abiotic components.
What to do:
1. Study the illustration above.
2. Answer the following questions.
a. What are the biotic components in the garden community?
b. What are the abiotic components of this community?
3. What living things do you think can be found under the stones/rocks? In the branches
of the tree? In the soil?
4. Why are they found there?
Concept of Ecosystem
A community is made up of many components that
can be grouped into abiotic components and biotic
components. The interaction between the abiotic and biotic
components in a community gives rise to an ecosystem. For
example in a forest community composed of trees, smaller
plants, animals and other living things like mouse ; fungi;
together with the soil, streams, stones give rise to what we
call forest ecosystem.
There are other ecosystems in the community e.g.
garden ecosystem, river ecosystem, etc.
The network of ecosystems all over the earths
surface constitute the living world or biosphere.
I Learned That:
An ecosystem has both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components.
Biotic components are those with life.
Abiotic components are there without life.
There is interaction between the biotic components and abiotic components in an
ecosystem.
