Calling all
ham radio
enthusiasts
National Amateur
Radio Field Day
exercise June 27-28
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Amateur radios roots can be
traced to the 19th century.
Over time, amateur radio, or
ham, enthusiasts have significantly contributed to a number of
things such as science, engineering, industry and social services.
There are about 3 million operators active worldwide.
The term "ham" as a nickname
for amateur radio operators originated in a derogatory usage by
operators in commercial and professional radio communities.
Members of the Burlington
County Radio Club will be participating in the National Amateur
Radio Field Day exercise June 2728 at the Tabernacle Emergency
Services Building. This is usually
the clubs biggest event of the
year.
Field day will give ham radio
operators a venue to demonstrate
the science and skills of amateur
radio by showcasing their temporary ham radio stations in a public location for folks to come see.
Its organized in a way in
which it is not necessarily a contest, but we record how many
public officials and kids come out
and we document who gets the
most views, said Eugene Holben,
a long-time member of the
Burlington County Radio Club.
These creations have the ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location
and create an independent communications network.
This event has been going on
for 40 to 50 years now and is often
a hit. More than 45,000 people participated in Field Day last year.
Its easy for anyone to pick up
a computer or smartphone, connect it to the Internet and complease see AMATEUR, page 5

connect with each other, said
Sean Kutso, a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League, the national association for Amateur
Radio. But if theres an interruption of service or youre out of
range of a cell phone tower, you
have no way to communicate.
Ham radio functions completely
independently of the Internet or
cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smartphones and can be set up almost
anywhere in minutes. Thats the
beauty of amateur radio during a
communication outage.
For more than 100 years, amateur radio has allowed people
from all walks of life to experi-

ment with electronics and communication techniques, as well as

provide a free public service to
their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cell
phone or the Internet.
Over the years, as communication has changed, public service
has become one of the most popular facets of amateur radio that
attracts practitioners.
Amateur radio operators,
using battery- or generator-powered equipment, often provide essential communications services
when regular channels are unavailable due to natural disaster
or other disruptive events.
We are the first group able to
set up and get going during disasters because our radios support
themselves by using generators
instead of radio towers that typically go down during severe displease see BURLINGTON, page 6

summer is here!
Life changes here in New Jersey for
two-and-a-half months once school
lets out for summer recess. The kiddies are home, which makes us change
our normal routine. Traffic eases up at
the typical before-school and afterschool rushes, and families head out of
town for vacation.
We here at The Sun dont take vacations. Well, thats not true, but our dedication to providing the best coverage
of town doesnt waiver one bit. If anything, summer allows us to focus even
more on the special people, places and
things that make our town so wonderful.

school coverage stories and photos
of students and teachers doing a community service project, of high school
sports teams and of noteworthy accomplishments. But that doesnt mean
our pages will be blank.
True, summer often does signal a
slowdown in official town- and
school district-related business, but
there is plenty of newsworthy happenings around town to keep your interest
piqued.
Summer is a time when we often

asters, Holben said.
The Burlington County group was instrumental during Hurricane Katrina. It
became an adjunct of the Red Cross to assist people who wanted to know how their
loved ones were doing.
Holben got involved with radio many
years ago after he graduated from high
school in 1942. He went on to serve in the
Navy where he would be sent to radio
school because of his unique skill set.

Now a resident of Medford, Holben got

into the Burlington County Radio Club
after he moved to the area from Pennsylvania and was contacted by a few guys in the
club.
Its a hobby for people in the community who like to operate radios, Holben said.
He is one of the original people who set
up the radio station on the Battleship New
Jersey.
The Burlington County Radio Club now
holds many of its activities on the ship, including multiple weekends where the guys
come out for picnics and get introduced to
different techniques by testing antennas.
The main objective of this group and its

field day event is to advance the techniques

of radio communication and to continually try to improve equipment to get further
distances and more clarity.
Its interesting when you stop to think
about it 80 percent of all electronic developments over the years like cell phones
and things of that nature were developed
by amateur radios, Holben said.
Anyone may become a licensed amateur
operator. There are more than 720,000 licensed hams in the United States, as young
as 5 and as old as 100.
With clubs such as the Burlington County Radio Club, its easy for anybody to get
involved. Visit www.k2td-bcrc.org.

Shamong BOE is going green

Board will now run meetings entirely through electronics instead of paper
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
The Shamong Board of Education will be going green and running meetings entirely through
electronics instead of paper.
Board secretary Marie Goodwin, who recently came over from
the Northern Burlington County
Regional School District, has
been using this system for about
five years and had nothing but
good things to say about her experiences with it.
Its so simple, Goodwin said.
The board will be using a system called BoardDocs. In just
more than its 25 years of existence, BoardDocs has lowered
costs, increased transparency and
reduced the time spent producing
board packets by up to 75 percent
for more than 1,000 organizations.
BoardDocs' next-generation paperless services will now allow
the board to significantly improve the way it creates and manages agendas, accesses information and conducts meetings.
There are two different versions, a $3,000 basic BoardDocs
option that Shamong will be
using, and a $12,000 a year program, which is primarily for larger districts.
The plan is to begin using this
new technology in August at the
first board meeting of the 2015-16
school year.
Prior to that, Goodwin will be

around all summer for anyone

who wants to learn how to use it.
Over the summer, I am going
to work with BoardDocs and get
something figured out, Goodwin
said. Im also willing to help
whoever wants to come by and
learn more about how it works.
BoardDocs is a web-based system in which every member of
the board will receive a login or a
user ID.
Its really just the same agenda
that you have in front of you, but
everything is just on the screen,
Goodwin said. Its the same format that we are using right now.
There are attachments that
will be exclusively for board
members and other areas that
will be accessible by the public.
There is a public access tool
so the public is going to be able to
get on here and theyre going to
be able to view the public content, Goodwin said.
There is also a search option

tool Goodwin referred to as her

favorite.
This tool gives you the opportunity to file through every meeting
ever held in the database to find
whatever it is you are looking for
using keywords.
In addition, there is a section
that allows board members to
comment for members who prefer taking notes at the meetings,
and there is a public comment
section for parents who want to
voice their opinions on particular
topics.
BoardDocs still gives you the
opportunity to print as well, for
those who are more comfortable
with having a paper copy of the
documents.

Talbot: The atmosphere. The
decision process for colleges is
difficult because all of the tours
that you go on are different based
on whom you get as a guide. I
wanted an academically rigorous
school but didnt want the Division I commitment as far as my
field hockey career goes. MIT has
a great Division III program and I
love the community, everyone is
so supportive. A lot of things at
MIT are based on collaboration. A
ton of the students said they
couldnt do homework without a

learning together. Its not a cutthroat environment, everyone is

nice and helpful.
The Sun: What major do you
plan to pursue there?
Horner: I plan to focus on biological sciences, anything premed.
Talbot: I want to focus on the
brain in cognitive sciences, premed as well.
The Sun: Any idea what you
plan to do with that degree yet?
Horner: I plan to go to med
school. Im not sure what kind of
doctor I want to be yet.
Talbot: Ive been interested in
the brain since middle school so I
want to do more research on that,
specifically stress and mental illness. Bio has always been my favorite class, more tangible application than psych. Medicine is so
fascinating to me. Ive considered

maybe going into surgery as well.

The Sun: What will the topic of
your speech be when you address
the class at the graduation ceremony?
Horner: Our journey through
Seneca. I really want to focus on
those four years and what sets
our class apart from the rest. Our
class is different in the sense that
it is not the best or the worst, but
it is the one that will make a difference in this world.
Talbot: Instead of looking back
like the class president and everyone else will be doing, I think my
job, as the valedictorian, is to look
forward. I want to share advice
with classmates on different matters like decision making. I always say when Im really old I
want to be able to reflect on what I
did to live a fulfilling life. I know I
cant expect people to accept all of

TALBOT

HORNER

my advice as their own, but I just

encourage people to take a step
back and look at things from a different perspective, be open to trying new things. I will try to inspire my classmates to take their
own path and dream bigger.
The Sun: What does it mean to
you to achieve an accomplishment like this?
Horner: It means a lot to see all

Email us at news@shamongsun.com

of the hard work paying off and

to be the last to address the class
before we all go our separate
ways.
Talbot: Its an honor. Im happy
and really glad to make my family
proud. I think one of the things
that means more to me is the
image in most peoples heads
when they think of the valedictorian, most times as a nerdy student who isnt involved in anything but academics. Im not like
that at all. I value academics, obviously, but Im a pretty relatable,
down to earth person. Im involved in different things like
sports and drama, and Im suffering from senioritis just as much
as the next person. Im glad that I
can show people theres not a specific stereotype that you have to
fall under to receive this honor
and anyone can do it.
