Woofstock set to be a tail-wagging good time

Annual Animal
Orphanage event
set for Oct. 3

Saturday, Oct. 3 has gone to the
dogs, or at least it will when the
Voorhees Animal Orphanage
holds its annual Woofstock at
John Connolly Park from 11 a.m.
to 4 p.m.
The event will mark the 19th
year the VAO has held its pet festival fundraiser that draws area
families, animal lovers and, of
course, pets to the park for a day
of fun.
With music, food, vendors, K9
demonstrations, raffles and an
alumni parade featuring pets previously adopted from the shelter,
VAO Director Dawn Mason said
this years event will be huge.
I think its going to be the
biggest year yet for vendors,
Mason said. We have 96 vendors,
and we still have people calling us
to be a vendor even though our
deadline was Sept. 15.
Also returning to the festival
will be $25 micro-chipping from
County Line Veterinary Hospital
and animal communicator Dr.
Elizabeth Severino. New this year
is live music, with local Grateful
Dead and Nirvana cover bands.

The Tutoring Club of Cherry
Hill/Voorhees will be holding
full-length practice SAT and ACT
exams on Saturday, Sept 26 from
8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The cost of

Tutoring Club of Cherry
Hill/Voorhees opened in 2004 and
since then has worked with more
than 6,000 students ranging in age
from 5-18 in virtually all subject
areas and SAT/ACT prep.
For the past eight years, Tutoring Club of Cherry Hill/Voorhees
has been offering SAT/ACT Practice Days on 15-20 Saturdays or
Sundays throughout the school
year. Each student takes a fulllength SAT or ACT test, however
the score does not go on a transcript.
The students score and a full
analysis of each students test is
provided within 10 days.
The club charges a nominal fee
of $35, with the proceeds going to
a local organization that sponsors the SAT/ACT Practice Day.

Local elections dont have to get out of hand

rears its ugly head about this
time every year. While its an
issue that is associated with biggerbudget elections such as for Congress,
governor and president, its not something that passes by local elections.
And thats a shame a real shame.
Elections at every level should be
about whos right for the job, not who
can raise, and spend, the most money.
Campaign funding reform has been
discussed, and implemented, time and
again, but its not an easy thing to control. There are plenty of loopholes,
and it can be hard to track.
At the local level, though, it should
be easier and it should be regulated.
A few years ago, one local municipality passed a pay-to-play ordinance
that we believe every town in New Jersey should adopt.
Moorestown originally passed an ordinance to align its campaign contribution limits to that of the state

$2,600 for professional business entities and $7,200 for political action committees.
Residents complained, though, and
for good reason. Those numbers were
a substantial increase from the towns
original limits of $300 and $500, respectively.
After signatures were gathered opposing the change, Moorestown reversed the ordinance and returned its
contribution limits to the lower levels.
It was a good move, and one that we
encourage other towns to make, if
they havent already.
Were all for pay-to-play ordinances
that protect local towns from being
run by outside influences such as corporations or other political entities.

Local politics, more so than any other

form of government, should be about
the residents of the town.
Local elections should be about the
candidates involved and what they
will do for the town and its residents.
Period.
It shouldnt be about what businesses want to see or political machines
want to see. Its about the people.
We encourage all local councils,
commissions and committees in New
Jersey to pass regulations on contribution limits, if such regulations arent
already on the books.
Its election season, and as we watch
debates and read about issues from
candidates at the state level and hear
of even more trouble at the federal
level its hard not to lose confidence
in the honesty and integrity of politics
today.
But local elections and local politics
dont have to be that way, as long as we
control it.

Animal Orphanage brings Woofstock to Connolly Park

The Voorhees Animal Orphanage will
hold its 19th Annual Woofstock Festival on
Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at
Connolly Park.
It is the biggest fundraising event of the
year for the orphanage. This year, the Camden County freeholders are partnering in
the event.
Woofstock will feature festivities for animal lovers of all ages and their leashed
pets, including pet contests, vendors,
music and a food court. There will be an
alumni parade, microchipping for $25, and
appearances by the Mummers, master chef
Joseph Poon and animal communicator,
Dr. Liz Severino.

Since 1988, the Animal Orphanage has
been providing shelter, food and medical
care to stray and unwanted animals until
permanent homes can be found. Each year,
the Animal Orphanage takes in nearly
1,500 abandoned, unwanted stray and
owner relinquished animals and rescues
hundreds of adoptable animals from high
kill shelters along the east coast. All of
these animals would have been euthanized.

HIB reports same number of incidents

at Eastern as prior school year

For the 2014-2015 school year,
there were 31 incidents at Eastern
Regional High School involving
violence, vandalism, substance
abuse or confirmed incidents of
harassment, intimidation or bullying the same number of incidents as the 2013-2014 year.
Eastern anti-bullying coordinator William Westerby presented that information to the Eastern Camden County Regional
School District Board of Education at its Sept. 16 meeting.
Westerby said that number
fluctuates from year to year, but
for the six or seven years hes
been collecting data, he believed
the number usually rests somewhere between 25 to 40 incidents
per year.
Giving a further breakdown of
the information, Westerby said in
2014-2015, there were 19 incidents
of violence, compared to 20 the
previous year.
The incidents of violence usually correspond to some sort of altercation or fight within the
building, Westerby said.
For incidents of vandalism,
Westerby said 2014-2015 saw three
incidents at Eastern, compared to
two incidents the year before.
Westerby reported during the
2014-2015 school year, there were
actually no weapon violations at
Eastern, a decrease from the one
that occurred in the 2013-2014
school year.
For incidents of substance
abuse, Westerby said each year
saw the same number of incidents with four.
These are students who either
bring some sort of illegal substance to school or are found to be
under the influence, Westerby
said.
For confirmed incidents in
which a student is harassed, intimidated or bullied another,
Westerby reported that for 20142015, there were five incidents,
compared to the four confirmed
incidents the year prior.
Superintendent Harold Melleby Jr. also spoke about the results,

and although he didnt have exact

numbers, he said there were several categories where the number
of incidents was down from several years ago, specifically substance abuse.
What number I know is down
is the substance abuse, Melleby
said. Im not saying theres not
substance abuse, but we had
years where we had double-digit

numbers. I know because upon a

second incident, the student ends
up for a superintendents hearing.
Overall, Melleby said he was
encouraged by the annual report.

want to have any incidents, but

Freeholders award municipal

recreation grants

When my children
were growing up in Lindenwold they would
constantly utilize the
municipal and county
parks to play baseball,
jump on the gym equipment and just be kids.
Last month the Freeholder Board awarded
our annual recreation
facility grants that provide opportunities
for little leagues, soccer programs and a
variety of other local institutions to expand and maintain their facilities. The
grants, funded through the Camden
County Open Space Preservation Trust
Fund, are presented to local recreation
programs that keep our kids on the field
and youth sports vibrant in our area.
Thanks to this program, key recreation
improvement projects have been identified to enhance the quality of life for residents across Camden County. In many
cases, these projects would not have been
considered to be undertaken with
strained local resources, which I can attest to as former president of a little
league. Every year these grants are funding important projects. This years projects are no different, from playground
and athletic field additions to new multiuse trails and facility improvements at
community centers.
We are now in the process of visiting the
municipal organizations that have been
identified for funding and sharing the
good news. This years applications represented a wide range of projects
throughout the county and we appreciate
the hard work and planning that went
into each request.
This year, Camden County Recreation
Facility Improvement Program grants
will benefit worthwhile projects in
Audubon, Barrington, Bellmawr, Berlin
Township, Brooklawn, Cherry Hill, Gibbsboro, Gloucester City, Gloucester Township, Haddon Heights, Haddon Township,
Haddonfield,
Lawnside,
Oaklyn,

Pennsauken, Pine Hill,

Somerdale, Stratford,
Voorhees, Waterford
Township and Woodlynne.
Camden County is
committed to preserving our parks, natural
areas and farmland not
only for their scenic
value, but for their continued use and enjoyment. To ensure
that our children, and their childrens
kids, will have the benefit of these facilities for years to come, the Camden
County Open Space Preservation Trust
Fund Advisory Committee was appointed by the Freeholder Board. The diverse committee provides the Freeholder
Board with guidance regarding the implementation of the Open Space Preservation Trust Fund. The Camden County
Open Space Preservation Trust Fund was
created by the Freeholder Board in 1999
in response to overwhelming voter support of an open space referendum placed
on the ballot in November 1998.
Each year, municipal organizations are
invited to submit an application detailing
the enhancements planned for their existing recreation facilities for consideration to the Advisory Committee.
Although the requests for funding are
limited to $25,000 per project each year,
municipal organizations may submit additional requests for funding in the following year. The projects must be
completed within a one year period.

dogs go through and how theyre
being trained and how intelligent
they are, Mason said.

pumpkin painting to coloring stations.
It will be a good time for the
whole entire family, Mason said.
