oting is one of the inalienable

rights that our forefathers
fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important inalienable rights that we have as Americans, if not the most important inalienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for independence in the 1700s based on the rallying cry of no taxation without representation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representation.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended or
ensured voting rights:

BOE, commissioners need time
for bond referendum
As the Board of Education moves forward with plans for a bond referendum to
fund repairs to our public schools, and as
the Board of Commissioners grapples with
the prospect of a drug rehab facility on the
Bancroft campus right next door to our
high school Haddonfield residents can expect an avalanche of misinformation, innuendo and false facts from a few members of the community who seem to delight
in fomenting dissent.
In the coming months, I hope the community will give school board members
and the commissioners the space and time
they need to develop and present their proposals. I hope they will give the proposals a
fair hearing. And I hope that those who disagree with the proposals will offer constructive, detailed and realistic alternatives.
Above all, I hope we will remember that
school board members and commissioners
are not evil-doers. I hope we will remember

that they are the neighbors we elected to

develop the proposals and take the actions
they believe are in the best interests of the
community as a whole.
Finally, I hope we will listen and learn,
and take care to distinguish between authoritative, reliable information and unfounded allegations and inflammatory
rhetoric. (Theres more than enough of
that on the presidential campaign trail.)
These are serious matters. We must treat
them seriously, respectfully and responsibly.

Commission approves borough events

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Commissioners unanimously
gave approval last week to a slew
of events, as well as the submission of an application for a grant
from the state Department of
Transportation for the reconstruction of Centre and Ellis
streets.
Commissioners unanimously
gave approval for the borough to
apply for the grant under the
Trust Fund for 2016. The desire is
to use the grant for the reconstruction of Centre and Ellis
streets, around the circle. The
borough didnt receive a grant
last year, so it is reapplying hoping for approval this year.
This would be to redo the
streets from the circle, up Ellis
Street, around the bend at the
court, and back down to Lincoln
Avenue, and this would be a DOT
grant.

Last year, we did not get a

grant; we are reapplying this year
to hopefully get one and be able to
do those two blocks, Commissioner John Moscatelli said.
Commissioners also unanimously approved First Night
Haddonfield 2015 to be held on
Friday, Dec. 31 from 6 p.m. to midnight on Kings Highway and adjacent areas.
Once again, we will have First
Night being held on Dec. 31, New
Years Eve, on Kings Highway
with some closures and building
uses throughout town, Mayor
Jeff Kasko said.
The authorization included the
closing of Kings Highway from
Haddon Avenue to PATCO and
connecting at intersecting streets
from 3 p.m. on Dec. 31 through 1
a.m. Jan. 1 for First Night. Vendors designated by the Haddonfield Cultural Events Commission First Night Steering Committee are allowed to sell food and

goods in designated areas, and

stationary outdoor entertainment
will be provided.
Commissioners also approved
a moratorium for overnight parking enforcement on First Night.
During and after the activities,
vehicles may be parked on borough streets between midnight
and 6 a.m. on Jan. 1.
Other events approved include
Haddonfield Uncorked and Paw It
Forward. Haddonfield Uncorked
will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14
from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and is put on
by the Partnership for Haddonfield. Paw It Forward will be held
by Ivivva Athletica on Saturday,
Oct. 24.
In other news:
The borough received $25,000
from the state for the lights on
Anniversary Fields.
The next commissioners
meeting will be held on Tuesday,
Oct. 27 at 8:15 p.m. at Borough
Hall.

Operation SAL provides

addiction treatment
By Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr.
Camden County
will provide critical
treatment services
to those battling the
grip of opiate and
heroin addiction.
Operation SAL is a
progressive
new
program that will
provide detoxification and treatment
services for anyone that has survived an overdose.
In 2014 the Freeholder Board
moved forward with a proactive
committee made up of law enforcement, community advocates,
service providers and members of
the health department to combat
the heroin epidemic. After more
than a year of advocating, educating and coordinating we are now
introducing a critical program to
our community- treatment. This
initiative is the first step in an organized effort to pull people away
from the deadly grip of opiates
and get them back on their feet.
The goal of the program is to initiate a warm hand off to outpatient detox followed by intensive
outpatient treatment at Delaware
Valley Medical in Pennsauken.
There they will be treated on an
outpatient basis until a bed opens
at a facility or they can be managed at the level of care determined by their case manager.
This innovative program is being
coordinated by the Camden
County Addiction Awareness Task
Force, who has put a number of
educational and preventive initiatives into service after it was commissioned in May 2014. Some of
those programs include Naloxone
training, expanding prescription
drop boxes throughout the county
and a highly recognizable public
service campaign that has been
emblazoned on billboards and
county vehicles- HEROIN. PILLS.
IT ALL KILLSwhat you thought

was miles away is

right in your backyard.
Operation SAL is
named after Sal
Marchese,
who
passed away in 2010,
and is the son of
task force member
Patty DiRenzo. SAL
is also an acronym
for save-a-life. DiRenzo has been a
statewide advocate and an outstanding resource on the issue of
heroin and opiate addiction. In
2013, she worked with Gov. Chris
Christie to pass the Overdose Prevention Act.
We identified the individual entities that would be on point to make
an intervention and provide an alternative to someone who was
treated for an overdose. They were
best situated to make a warm
hand off to offer detox and treatment services. Furthermore, they
are providing transportation in
cases that call for it and are a key
component to Operation SAL.
Kennedy Health, Virtua Health
System, Cooper University Health
Care, and Our Lady of Lourdes
Medical Center all are participating in the program. The Camden
County Health Department is
working with the health care
providers now to train staff and
Operation SAL should be active in
the next month.

Two South Jersey natives are

being honored for their charitable work throughout the region,
including one former Haddonfield resident.
The Community Foundation of
South Jersey will honor the mem-

ory, generosity and impact of two

of South Jerseys generous philanthropists, Lewis Katz and
Marcy Dalsey, at the 2015 Legacy
of Giving Award Event. The
event takes place Monday, Oct. 26
at 6:30 p.m. at Tavistock Country
Club, 100 Tavistock Lane.
Our goal is to showcase people
who are truly legacies, building
legacies of generosity and giving
back. We hope those legacies will
inspire others to do the same,
said Kyle Ruffin, board member
of CFSJ and chair of the Legacy
of Giving event.
Katz was the founder and director of the Katz Foundation, which
throughout his lifetime supported a wide variety of charitable,
educational and medical causes.
A native of Camden, his business
accomplishments and philanthro-

py touched countless men,

women and children in South Jersey and beyond. Two Boys & Girls
Clubs in Camden, the Jewish
Community Center in Cherry
Hill, as well as Temple and Columbia universities were among
the organizations that benefited
from his generosity. In 2011, he
founded the newly-renamed Katz
Dalsey Academy Charter School,
part of Camdens Charter School
Network, which now serves children from Camdens Parkside and
Cramer Hill communities.
During a meeting, he shared
with me a list of people who he
hoped to inspire to be more philanthropic. He wanted them to experience the joy that comes with

and former Haddonfield Mayor
Jack Tarditi said in a press release.
Dalsey, a resident of Haddonfield, was the co-founder of the
Katz Dalsey Academy Charter
School, formerly known as the
Katz Academy Charter School.
She worked with Katz family organizations in various capacities
since 2007, including as executive
director of the Drew A. Katz
Foundation. Early in her career,
she fed her passion for service by
working with organizations such
as the Food Bank of South Jersey,
Volunteers of America Delaware
Valley, Cooper Hospital, Covenant
House, The Michael Bolton Foundation, The Chris Evert Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club of
Camden County.
Marcy was like Katz right

and made it a reality He was

said.

Proceeds from the Legacy of Giving

Award event will benefit CFSJ
PROCEEDS
Continued from page 13
CFSJ maximizes the impact of
generosity by helping charitableminded people make prudent decisions about the money they donate. CFSJ serves the eight-county South Jersey region, managing
donor-advised funds for individuals, families, businesses and communities. Each year, the Community Foundation honors individuals and families who generously
devote time and money to causes
they care about with the Legacy
of Giving Award.
We chose to honor Lewis and
Marcy because they are incredi-

ble examples to follow. Our Legacy of Giving event is designed to

make giving contagious. In that
way, we can increase the resources that our communities
need to thrive, Tarditi said.
Speaking to Temple at graduation, Lewis said, You cannot have
a perfect day until youve given to
someone who cant pay you back.
That was a message that really
resonated with me. It is not a reciprocal act; it is about giving selflessly and not getting anything in
return Dalsey was the perfect
teammate in making Lewis vision happen. People tell me she
was very motivational She lit
up the room and embodied good
spirit and motivation. They were
like the dynamic duo, Ruffin
said.

The Legacy of Giving Awards

event will host a cocktail and dinner reception, a tribute performance by students from KatzDalsey Academy, a slideshow
presentation and presentations of
the Legacy of Giving Awards, and
a free $1,000 raffle to an organization of the individuals choice.
Admission is $200 per person.
Tickets are being sold until Oct.
22 for the Legacy of Giving
Awards and can be purchased at
the CFSJ website communityfoundationsj.org.
Proceeds from the event will
benefit CFSJ, and a portion will
be donated to Camdens Charter
School Network Katz Dalsey to
use as it sees fit.

Autumn Fair this Saturday

.ccom

Don't miss a true Haddonfield

tradition on Saturday, Oct. 24
when Elizabeth Haddon Elementary School, 501 Redman Ave. in
Haddonfield, holds its 65th annual Autumn Fair.
The event, sponsored by the
Lizzie Haddon PTA, will be held
rain or shine from 11 a.m. to 3
p.m. on school grounds.
This is the place to be for families with kids.
There'll be food, pony rides, a
petting zoo, inflatables, face painting, a "beauty salon" plus "tattoo
parlor," art projects and a lot
more.
The day promises lots of fun
for a good cause and at a reasonable price. Great raffles, too, for
themed baskets with high-end donations inside.
Proceeds from the fair support
the PTA's efforts to increase technology in the elementary schools,
as well as to enrichment programs.

Veterans Day Service

to be held at HMHS
The members of Haddonfield
American Legion Post 38 invite
the public to honor our veterans
and attend their Veterans Day
Service in the Haddonfield Memorial High School Auditorium
on Wednesday, Nov. 11. The service will begin promptly at 11:11
a.m. and last approximately 40
minutes.
In addition to the public, local
veterans and soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines on active duty
or serving in the National Guard
or Reserves are invited to attend
this service.
Veterans Day is the day set
aside to thank and honor those
who have served honorably in the
military, during both times of
war and peace.
Thanks to the support of the
Haddonfield school system and

Haddonfield Memorial High

School Principal Chuck Klaus,
Post 38 has moved its Veterans
Day Service to the HMHS Auditorium because of the possibilities
of inclement weather and the opportunity to have students attend
the service.
The program will include an
opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, a POW-MIA Flag Ceremony, the Star-Spangled Banner, short readings by selected
Post officers and remarks by Post
38 Commander Joe McElroy and
Mayor Jeff Kasko.
Haddonfield Memorial High
School is located at 401 Kings
Highway East.
Visitors should proceed to the
main entrance; enter through the
left door to the Main Office where
students will escort them to the
auditorium. Citizens and veterans are urged to take an hour out

who falls in love with her simple,
fun and good-natured personality.
Other than the slightly different stories, HMHS fall production will stand out from others
with special effects, incidental
music, great costuming, choreographed swordplay and the addition of one Haddonfield Middle
School student and one Haddonfield elementary school student.
I hope during Beauty and the
Beast (the audience) gets to relax
and enjoy this tale that is so well
known and see all the cool costumes, actors and talent. In Cinderella, I really hope they can
laugh and I really hope they participate with all of the audience
participation things. And just
enjoy, said sophomore Riley
Crompton, who plays the Story
Teller and Madame Rondeau.
Each play also has a lesson to
teach the audience.
Vaugh believes Beauty and
the Beast can teach the audience
to treat others as you would like
to be treated and love and care for
those in need. For Cinderella
Wore Combat Boots, the message for her is those who dish out
kindness while expecting nothing
in return are often better off in
the end.
Junior JT Tully, who plays the
Prince in Cinderella Wore Combat Boots and Greedo in Beauty
and the Beast, believes forgiveness, and not to be selfish or
greedy, is an important lesson to
learn from Beauty and the
Beast, while junior Joanna
Moles, playing Beauty, believes
the audience can take away that
selfishness gets you nowhere and
in the end true love and caring for
others gets you far.
For Cinderella Wore Combat
Boots, Tully believes audiences
can learn fairness and hard work
will get you a lot more in life than
passing work on to others.
Vaughn would love for Haddonfields youngsters to come to the
play and enjoy live theater.
Beauty and the Beast is a
show for everyone. You have com-

edy; you have drama; there is romance; there is fighting; so I
know for a family there is something for everyone, Tully said.
I just hope they enjoy the different aspects and genres of the
show, and I think Beauty and the
Beast is really moving. For Cinderella Wore Combat Boots, it is
very comical so I hope they get
the comical side of it; but again,
there is a very serious side to Cinderella and finding your true
love.

topic of The Trees of Haddonfield.
Have you ever wondered about
the beautiful trees that line the
streets of Haddonfield: what are
their names, who takes care of
them, and who decides if a tree is
to be pruned or removed?
Come and find out these answers and about the Haddonfield
Shade Commission at our Oct. 23
meeting. The public is welcome

and the program is free.

In addition to this program, the
candidate the Haddon Fortnightly sponsored for the Girls State
Institute this past summer will
