SANITARY LANDFILL
method of disposing solid waste on land
without creating nuisance or hazard to public
health or safety. Utilizing engineering principles
to confine waste to the smallest practical area
and to reduce it to the smallest practical volume
and cover it with a layer of earth at the
conclusion of each days operation or at such
more frequent intervals as necessary

DESIGNING A LANDFILL

Chemical compatibality of geomembrane with waste
leachate is critical usual problem : discoloring,
dissolve, tearing, cracking, swelling.

LANDFILL OPERATION
Weighing

Waste is brought to the so-called working face. The area


should be large enough to accommodate several vehicles
unloading simultaneously

Waste deposited into daily cells, i.e., small units of land


that are filled with MSW and then covered at the end of
the day by a layer of soil

EXAMPLE 1
Determine

the area required for a new sanitary


landfill with a projected lifetime of 25 years. The
landfill will serve a population of 250,000 persons
generating 28kg per household per week.
Average waste density in the landfill is 550kg/m3.
Landfill height is not to exceed 25 meters.
Assume four persons per household.

LANDFILL OPERATIONS: COVER MATERIAL


Active

landfill cells must be covered with at least


6 inch of soil or similar material to control
disease vectors, fires, odour, blowing litter and
scavenging by animals
