Model Answer Key For Grade 11

VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS
AIM:
To find molarity and strength of the given NaOH Solution. You are provided
with M/10 solution of HCl.Also determine the percentage purity of the
given NaOH, 4.5g of which is dissolved per litre.
APPARATUS: measuring flask, glass funnel, burette, pipette, burette
stand.
CHEMICALS: NaOH, HCl, phenolphthalein.
THEORY:
It is possible to find the molarity or volume of the unknown solution using
molarity equation:
M1V1 = M2V2
n1

n2

Where M=Molarity, V=Volume , n=no of moles

The reaction that occurs can be represented as
NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O

Calculations:
1.Molarity of the NaOH Solution
According to the equation, one mole of NaOH reacts with one mole of HCl
VNaOH x MNaOH

VHCl

nNaOH

x MHCl
nHCl

MNaOH
___________M

VHCl

x MHCl

x nNaOH

VNaOH x nHCl
2. Calculation of strength of NaOH in g/L.
Strength / litre = Molarity x Molar mass = ____ x 40 = __(x)___g/L
3.To calculate percentage purity.
4.5g of impure sample of NaOH contain = x g of NaOH
1g of impure sanmple of NaOH contain = x g of NaOH
4.5
Percentage Purity = x x 100 = _____%
4.5
RESULT:
(a)
Molarity of the given NaOH solution = ___________M
(b)
The strength of the given NaOH solution =
______g/L
(c) Percentage Purity = _____ %
PRECAUTIONS:

1. Since the lower meniscus of HCl is visible, read the

lower meniscus.
2. Rinse the burette and pipette before use.
