Electricity generation from See Saw

Synopsis

Abstract
Electricity crisis is the major problem faced by Indian economy today. It not only affects the
commercial scenario but also affects the domestic use of electricity due to its shortage. To
overcome this problem, this project deals with the concept of electricity generation from See
Saw. A See Saw is fabricated which is incorporated with a mechanism to generate the electricity
and store it in the battery for further use.

Keywords: See Saw, electricity, battery, mechanism etc.

Introduction
Energy is the primary need for survival of all organisms in the universe. Everything what
happens in the surrounding is the expression of flow of energy in one of the forms. But in this
fast moving world, population is increasing day by day and the conventional energy sources are
lessening. The extensive usage of energy has resulted in an energy crisis over the few years.
Therefore to overcome this problem we need to implement the techniques of optimal utilization
of conventional sources for conservation of energy.
Electricity has become the lifeline of the country, with per capita consumption touching 1000
KW, but we are still lagging behind China and other developing countries. The total installed
capacity for electricity generation was 2,66,387 MW in March 2013, but distributing electricity
at the retail level at affordable and reasonable prices is still a nightmare. Secondly, the regulatory
framework for the electricity business needs strengthening. Loss in distribution is a worrisome
factor and sadly efforts being taken to bring down losses are not encouraging. The new
government must invest in this field, which may involve rationalizing tariff and incentivizing
reduction of losses.
Thus the problem of energy crisis still prevails in India, affecting the growth of the nation. The
total supply of electrical energy generated from the hydel and other conventional resources is far
less than the total demand of electrical energy.
This results in load shedding and interrupted supply of electrical energy, which indirectly hinders
the growth of the nation. To overcome these disadvantages this project deals with the unique
concept of electricity generation from See Saw.

Objective

The main objective of this project is to design an alternative innovative way to generate
electricity from garden See Saw. The electricity generated this way can be used for
lighting the garden and surrounding areas.

The another objective of the project is to design the See Saw in such a way that it is
economical as compared to normal See Saw which would rule out the additional
installation cost.

Working Principle
The working principle of this project is very simple. This project involves a mechanical
fabrication of See Saw, which is incorporated with the electricity generating mechanism. The
detailed figure of the entire setup is given below which will help in understanding the working
principle of the entire project.

The kid in the garden playing on the See Saw, indirectly triggers the chain and sprocket drive
attached to the See Saw. When the kid moves the See Saw up and down as referred form the
figure, the to and fro motion of the See Saw is converted into the rotary motion of Using the
chain and sprocket drive as shown in the figure. Further the drive ratio is altered using multi
stage chain and sprocket drive as shown in the figure above, which increases the speed of the DC
Generator.
When the kid in the park plays over the See Saw, the rotary motion of the shaft is transferred to
the DC micro generator using the chain and sprocket drive. Thus for every to and fro motion of
the kid over the See Saw, the dc generator connected to the See Saw rotates, thus generating
electricity.
The generated electricity is further stored in a Battery using a bridge rectifier and the stored
electrical energy is used for lighting and other purposes.

Research Methodology
The mode of conduct of the project is divided into following phases.
1) Fabrication of See Saw:
In this phase the mechanical fabrication of See Saw is done. This involves the designing
of the see saw and fabricating it according to our needs.
2) The Electricity generation Unit:
In this phase the sprocket chain reduction drive is added to the See Saw. This involves
assembling the See Saw fabricated in step one with the sprocket chain drive and
generator.
3) The electricity storage unit:
In this phase the electricity generated in with the see saw is stored in the battery for
further utilization. This phase involves making the electrical connections and giving it to
the load.

Future Scope
This project involves generating electricity from the see saw which is stored in battery and later
used for lighting and other purposes. This project can be in future combined with Kids slide and
garden gates to generate electricity on larger quantities and which can be stored in a common
storage system and utilizes when required.
