Physics Practical

1) The experiment aims to determine the specific heat of a material by measuring the heat required to increase its temperature. 2) The specific heat is the amount of heat per unit mass required to raise the temperature by one degree Celsius. 3) The experiment involves measuring the mass and temperature of a calorimeter, water, and a copper block before and after the block is immersed in the water to determine the specific heat of copper using the formula provided.

I. Aim
To determine the specific heat of material.

II. Basic Theory

Specific heat capacity, also known simply as specific heat, is the measure
of the heat energy required to increase the temperature of a unit quantity of a
substance by a certain temperature interval.
The specific heat is the amount of heat per unit mass required to raise the
temperature by one degree Celsius. The relationship between heat and
temperature change is usually expressed in the form shown below where c is
the specific heat. The relationship does not apply if a phase change is
encountered, because the heat added or removed during a phase change does
not change the temperature.

Heat added = specific heat x mass x (tfinal - tinitial)

III. Apparatus
− Calorimeter
− Heater
− Tread
− Thermometer
− Cooper block / another materials

IV. Procedure
1. Measure mass of empty calorimeter (mk) and record it.
2. Measure mass of block cooper (mc).
3. Pour water into the calorimeter about 3 cm of its dept.
4. Measure mass of the calorimeter plus water (mk + mw).
5. Calculate the mass of water (mw) and record it.
6. Measure the temperature of the water in the calorimeter (t1) and record it.
7. Heated a block of cooper in the becker glass.
8. At temperature of 80oC (record its temperature as t2) take the block and
immerse in the calorimeter soon.
9. Stir the water in calorimeter and watch the increasing of the temperature.
10. Record the highest temperature of the water (tf).
11. Repeat steps 1 to 10 three times, start from initial condition.
Use formula below, determine the specific heat of cooper:

mc c(t2-tf) = mk ck(tf-t1) + mw cw(tf-t1)

mc : mass of cooper
mk : mass of calorimeter
mw : mass of water
c : specific heat of cooper
ck : specific heat of calorimeter (its depend of the materials of the calorimeter)
cw : specific heat of water (4180 J Kg-1K-1)
t1 : lowest temperature
t2 : highest temperature
tf : final temperature

V. Result
Ck
No mc (g) mk (g) mw (g) t1 (oC) T2 (oC) tf (oC)
(kal/goc)
1 91,2 59,25 123,85 29o 90o 31o
2 91,2 59,25 104,29 29o 85o 31o
3 91,2 59,25 109,20 29o 92o 31,5o

Cw : kal/goc
Ck : kal/goc

VI. Conclusion
The specific heat of cooper is kal/goC
