INTRODUCTION

This Service Bulletin applies to cylinder liners in which the Lubricating Quills for the upper
level of lubricating holes are fitted in the collar, rather than in the body of the liner. The
lubricating oil is fed down to the oil hole in the running surface via a bore and a Non Return
Valve (NRV), see fig.1. Service experience has shown some cases of cooling water leakage
through the NRV into the cylinder liner. In order to prevent possible leakage of the NRV and
consequential damage, the design of the existing NRV has been improved for retrofitting on
liners in service. A newly designed NRV has been introduced for new liners.
The engines concerned are: RTA48T and T-B
RTA58T and T-B
RT-flex58T-B
RTA / RT-flex68-B

2 IMPROVED EXISTING NRV

The original NRV and the improved version, see fig.2, are interchangeable and adaptation of
the connection in the liner is not necessary. The improved NRV can be ordered with the part
numbers listed in section 5
2.1

Features:

- Fitting in the liner unchanged, no

machining of bore required.
- Cooling bore in the centre of the NRV body
providing for reduced temperature.
- Soft-iron sealing ring omitted. Metal/metal
sealing.
- Optimised NRV mechanism.
- Steam resistant O-ring type Viton 70Sh

2.2

Fitting instructions

- Remove the old NRV and thoroughly clean and degrease the bore and thread
- The new NRV has no soft-iron sealing ring. It is therefore of the utmost importance that
the sealing surface at the bottom of the bore is clean, smooth and square. If necessary use a
suitable grinding rod and grinding paste to ensure the sealing surface is smooth and square.
- Fit the new NRV with Loctite 620 on the thread and tighten with 50 Nm.

3 NEW DESIGN NRV

New liners will be fitted with a newly designed NRV, see fig.3. As the bore and thread size
are different, the new NRV is not interchangeable with the original one.
3.1

Features:

- Changed o-ring position, closer to cooling

water space resulting in lower temperature.
- Cooling bore in the centre of the NRV body
providing for reduced temperature.
- Soft-iron sealing ring omitted. Metal/metal
sealing.
- Optimised NRV mechanism.
- Steam resistant O-ring type Viton 70Sh

4 ADDITIONAL CHECK
The bore that connects the lubricating oil quill with the NRV is
sealed at the bottom end with an M12 plug screw, see fig.4.
Check that the plug screw is correctly tightened and properly
sealing.
In case of doubt, remove the plug screw, thoroughly clean and
degrease the thread in the bore and fit a new plug screw with
soft-iron washer and Loctite 620. Tighten with a torque of 70
Nm.
