Filipino Family Then and Now

Family, a word that so many people know, but only few understand. Here
in the Philippines, family shows the culture, beliefs, and traditions that only
we, Filipinos, possess. We are now in the modern era whereas changes are
inevitable. In virtue of that, Filipino families need to cope up with these
changes. Looking on how globalization changes the culture, beliefs and
traditions of our country, these are some of the apparent changes in what so
called a Filipino family has today.
In the prevailing years, Filipino family followed old tradition. There was
more respect in elderly. The size of a family is smaller than that of previous
years because the government promotes different kinds of family planning
unlike before. Today, both father and the mother considered the head and the
provider of the family unlike before only the father is considered the head and
the provider. In addition to that, a lot of Filipino families have to put up with
separation. Both the mother and father tend to go abroad because they think
that Philippines is not good anymore to live in. In consequence to that, the
family becomes like Americans who are broken by distance. Also, Filipino
teenagers and their parents are now more open minded to each other. Unlike
before that talking back against your parents are considered disrespectful. Notso-usual family configurations are already present. Man-to-man, woman-towoman, etc. are being tolerated in our society today unlike before. It is already
normal seeing a couple having two same-sex people who want to have children
through adoption or surrogation. Lastly, delayed marriages are getting to be the
practice. There are many who decide to get married after some time of living
together.
Even though, modernization changes the way how a normal Filipino
family lives, still the eminent definition of Filipino is present. Filipino family is
known for their love that is different among any family in the world.
