ASSIGNMENT 2
QUESTION 1 (CO3;PO1&PO3)
An overhanging beam ABC of span 8 m as shown in Figure 1 carries a uniformly distributed
load is subjected to a uniformly distributed load as shown below. Determine the equations for
deflection for sections AB, BC and CD using the Integration Method. EI is constant.
Determine the deflection and slope at x = 6.5 m from point A.

QUESTION 2 (CO4;PO1)
a)

A circular indeterminate shaft ABC is subjected to the torque as shown in Figure Q2(a).
Section AB is hollow, with an inner diameter of 60 mm and an outer diameter of 120 mm.
Solid section BC of the shaft is 70 mm in diameter. Taking modulus of rigidity, G = 80
GN/m2,
i)

draw the torque diagram of the shaft.


(2 marks)

ii) calculate the reaction torques at both supports.


(6 marks)
iii) determine the maximum torsional stress in the sections AB and BC.
(4 marks)
iv) solve the rotation of the shaft at B.

b) Shaft AB has a 60 mm diameter and is made of aluminum with an allowable shearing
stress of 80 MPa, while shaft BC has a 30 mm diameter and is made of steel with an
allowable shearing stress of 100 MPa as shown in Figure Q2(b). Determine the largest
torque, T that can be applied at C.
