Theory of Elasticity Question Paper

1) The document contains 8 questions regarding the theory of elasticity and plasticity. Questions involve determining stress and strain fields, displacements, moments of inertia, and stress distributions for various beams, plates, discs and tubes under different loading conditions. 2) Question 1 involves determining displacements, Green's strains, and a point strain for a loaded square plate. 3) Question 2 involves calculating the fully plastic moment and residual stresses for a loaded T-beam undergoing elastic unloading. 4) Question 3 involves determining maximum tangential stress, zero contact pressure rotational speed, and maximum tangential stress for a shrunk disc on a shaft.

ME G641: THEORY OF ELASTICITY & PLASTICITY

FIRST SEMESTER 2018-2019
Comprehensive Examination (OPEN BOOK)
Max Marks: 40 Duration: 3 Hours 3rd December, 2018 (2PM - 5PM)
Q1. A square plate (refer FigQ1), 1 m long on a side, is loaded in a state of plane strain and is
deformed as shown. (a) Write expressions for the u and v displacements for any point on the
plate. (b) Determine the components of Green strain in the plate. (c) Determine the Green
strain at point B for a line element in the direction of line OB. [4M]

Q2. The structural steel in a T beam has a yield strength Y = 260 MPa (FigQ2). The critical section
of beam is subjected to a moment that cause compression in top fibers of the beam. Determine
the fully plastic moment Mp. Now assume that the beam is unloaded elastically from the fully
plastic state. Determine the residual stresses at the top and bottom of the beam. Sketch the
residual stress distribution. [4M]
Q3. A disc of 76 cm diameter is shrunk on a shaft of 7.4 cm diameter. The interference on the
diameter is 0.0048 cm. (a) Find the maximum tangential stress in the disc when it is at a
standstill. (b) Find the rotational speed at which the contact pressure is zero. (c) What is the
maximum tangential stress at the above speed? Both the disc and shaft are made of steel.
E = 214 GPa, υ = 0.3 and ρ = 8100 kg/m3. [4M]
Q4. For a cantilever beam (see Fig) under uniformly distributed loading, stress distribution is
given by following equations
w 2
x  x y
2I z
w
y  (2c 3  3 c 2 y  y 3 )
6I z
w
 xy  x (c 2  y )
2I z

(a) Obtain the corresponding displacement field. (b) Determine whether the obtained
displacement field is compatible or not? (c) If not then determine the simplest correction
which will cancel the unwanted term in stress functions. [5M]

Q5. Consider a thick tube a  r  b , fixed at r = a and free at r = b. Along the free outer surface,
the tube is subjected to uniform shear which forms a couple M as shown in Fig Q5.
Determine the stress and strain field inside the cylinder as a function of M. Use the stress
function φ= Aθ. [5M]

FigQ5 FigQ6

Q6. FigQ6 shows metal cubes A, B and C of side 100 mm in direct contact resting on rigid base
and confined in x-direction between two rigid plates. Young’s modulus of elasticity and
Poisson’s ratio for cubes A and C are 150 GPa and 0.25 respectively and for cube B are
200 GPa and 0.3 respectively. If the upper face of the centre cube B is subjected to uniform
compressive stress of 0.5 kN/mm2, compute for cube B, the following:
a) the direct stress σx in x-direction
b) the direct strain in x, y and z direction
c) the volumetric strain [5M]
Q7. A steel tube 1.5 m long has the cross-section shown in FigQ7. The tube is transmitting a
torque of 200 N-m. Determine the average shear stress in each wall and the angle of twist of
the tube. Take t1 = 3 mm, t2 = 2 mm, t3 = 5 mm, a = 20 mm, b = 40 mm, c = 50 mm,
E = 210 GPa and υ = 0.3 [6M]

Q8. A curved cantilever beam of inner radius a and outer radius 2a is subjected to end loadings as
shown in FigQ8. State the assumed Airy’s stress functions, write down the key strong and
weak boundary conditions separately for the problem and compute the stress components σr,
σθ, & τrθ.
If P = 200 kN and a = 500 mm, determine the hoop stress (σθθ) along line A-A at the inside
radii i.e. at r = a. [7M]
