Seneca girls soccer wins

first South Jersey Group
III title in eight years
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Earlier this year, the Seneca
High School girls soccer team
made a goal to win the sectional
finals, after a heartbreaking loss
last season against Toms River
South, 3-2.
The team achieved that goal,
winning its second-ever South
Jersey Group 3 title when the
girls came out on top over Highland Regional High School, 4-2.
Seneca girls soccer hasnt won a
sectional title since 2008, with a 10 victory over Lacey Township
High School.
I am so proud of them. They
practiced and played each day
with the playoffs in mind, and to
achieve and have that goal realized is something very special,
Coach Ron Jensen said.
The Golden Eagles were confident going into the game, according to Jensen. He said the team
felt like it could beat Highland
with good possession of the ball
and relentless pressure on defense.

Donations needed for Project Giving Tree

YMCA seeks gifts for area children whose families face financial hardship
Through Project Giving Tree,
the YMCA of Burlington and
Camden Counties strives to bring
joy and wonder to children by
providing gifts to deserving children whose families are facing financial hardship.
Through Dec. 8, stars will be
available from the Ys Giving
Trees in the Welcome Centers at
the Mt. Laurel and BurlingtonRiverfront YMCAs. The trees are

decorated with stars identifying a

child's name, age, clothing size
and what they would like from
Santa.
All are welcome to stop by the
YMCA and select one or more of
the stars to help make a child feel
like a star this holiday season. All
Project Giving Tree participants
are asked to return their stars
with the wrapped gifts to the Ys
Welcome Center by Friday, Dec. 9.

Giving Trees are displayed at

the Mt. Laurel YMCA, located at
59 Centerton Road in Mt. Laurel,
and the Burlington-Riverfront

BCAS partners with UPenn veterinary school

Burlington County Freeholder
Director Bruce Garganio has announced the Burlington County
Animal Shelter will be entering
into a partnership with the University Of Pennsylvania School
Of Veterinary Medicine to provide medical care to shelter animals.
Through this partnership, the
Penn Vet Surgical and Anesthesia
Training Program will provide
our shelter animals with a complete
physical
examination,
heartworm testing, baseline
blood work and free spay/neuter
surgeries, Garganio said.
As part of the agreement,
transportation of animals to
Penn Veterinary Hospital will be
provided by the Friends of
Burlington County Animal Shelter.
The great part of this agreement is that not only will our

shelter have access to free veterinarian care and professional

guidance, but it will also help to
increase the number of animals
finding their forever homes,

Garganio said. I am confident

that many of the students, staff
and faculty at Penn Vet will go on
to adopt some of our amazing animals once they meet them.

DONT LEAVE A TANGLED MESS

for your loved ones to deal

students doing such great work in
our community said Paul Drayton RCBCs president. In 2015,
we had 680 students engage in
community service activities,
with an outstanding 24,263 total
hours of service. Our students
come from all walks of life, yet we
all move forward together in support of our community.
Rowan College at Burlington
County transforms lives through
education and transforms our
communities through community service, Burlington County
Freeholder Mary Ann OBrien
said. Its gratifying to see national organizations recognize the
great community spirit and service that we all know exists within
Burlington County and Rowan
College at Burlington County.

More than 43,000 free books

were distributed to schools and
organizations throughout New
Jersey during First Book. Along
with distributing the books, English and service-learning students followed up with recipient
organizations to evaluate efficiency
and
effectiveness in a yearlong project.
Give Kids a Smile Day is part of
the American Dental Associations annual push to bring attention to tooth decay. Ninety-nine
children received 843 dental procedures totaling $47,681 for free.
Dental hygiene students and
alumni volunteer at this event.
Bridging the Digital Divide is a
program to help senior citizens
improve their digital literacy.

in our opinion

Give thanks ... and give help

There are people throughout New Jersey who could use your help
omorrow officially kicks off
the holiday season. Thanksgiving is here, and with it come
family, friends, food and football.
In elementary schools across the
country this week, children will be
taught the history of Thanksgiving.
Some will celebrate it by making pilgrim and Indian hats out of paper and
by having a feast of their own. Theyll
be asked what they are thankful for
and share it with the class.
At most of our homes on Thursday,
well be sitting around a TV or at a
dinner table or keeping a close eye on
the oven so we dont burn the turkey.
Well be welcoming relatives, near and
far, to gather for a day where we can
also give thanks for all we have.
Quickly, as if in a blink of an eye,
that theme will shift to the two most

famous winter holidays Christmas

and Hanukkah and, with it, holiday
shopping.
But before you turn the page in your
mind to buying presents and decorating your house with lights, take an
extra minute this year to remember
what youre thankful for, and help
those who might not be as lucky as
you. You might not see it in your community, but there are a lot of people in
New Jersey who need help. Legal Services of New Jersey, a group based in
Edison, recently released a report that

suggests 2.8 million people in the Garden State are living in poverty. A family of four living in this state would
have to earn $60,000 per year to be considered above the groups poverty line.
Thats because, according to its President Melville Miller, the group defines
poverty as being significantly deprived of any one particular need
after considering costs for everything
from food, clothing, health care, housing and transportation.
Its expensive to live in our state
we know that. And people are in need
throughout our state, not just in its
urban centers.
So be thankful for what you have,
and help those who arent in the same
position as you are. Do more for others
this holiday season. Itll be the best gift
you can give.

Lenape BOE keeps policy barring homeschool

students from extracurricular activities
Recent public comment at LRHSD meetings urged board to revise policy
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Homeschool students, as well as those
not educated in one of the Lenape Regional
High School Districts four schools, will
continue to be barred from participating in
curricular, extra-curricular or athletic activities in the LRHSD.
The Board of Education unanimously
upheld the policy at its meeting last week,
despite public comment urging the board
to revise the policy.
Tabernacle resident Marni Cunard requested her son Adam, a homeschool stu-

dent, be allowed to play on the Seneca High

School football team. She said she could
provide references of character and equivalent education, and how other surrounding school districts allow homeschool students to play.
The Pearson family of Mt. Holly came to
the meeting and said their home-schooled
children are allowed to participate in extracurricular activities at Rancocas Valley
Regional High School. Husband and wife
Ed and Robin felt allowing a homeschool
student to play at the local high school is
more about community, building an open
relationship and community of inclusion.

I think sometimes we can get caught up

in discussing homeschooling versus academics It is more about community because a school is a part of a community,
Ed said. I ask that you look at your mission statement (talking about community)
and what students can learn from this experience and the reports going out Was
(LRHSD) an open community that drove
home inclusion of all types of educational
opportunities?
Other members of the public who spoke
at the meeting all supported revising the

Tabernacle School District achieves

Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification
Tabernacle Elementary School
and Kenneth R. Olson Middle
School, both schools in the Tabernacle Township School District,
have met the rigorous requirements to achieve Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification.
These schools join a group of
83 schools that achieved the Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification in 2016. A total of 538
schools and 218 school districts
are participating in the program
overall.
The
administration
and
Board of Education are extremely proud of the efforts of our staff
and students that resulted in this
prestigious award, said Superintendent Glenn Robbins.
Sustainable Jersey for Schools
is voluntary, but achieving certification is not easy. Schools collaborate with their school district to
complete actions, upload documentation and achieve certification.
Becoming certified with Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a
significant
achievement
for
schools and their school district,
said Donna Drewes, co-director of

Special to The Sun

Members of the Tabernacle School District and the Tabernacle

schools Board of Education accept their award on Oct. 25 for receiving Sustainable New Jersey for Schools certification.
Sustainable Jersey. They are
leaders in implementing sustainability measures that save money,
improve the learning environment and prepare todays students to address the challenges of
tomorrow.
Each school that is certified at
the bronze-level must submit documentation to show it has com-

pleted a balanced portfolio of the

programs sustainability actions,
achieving a minimum of 150
points. Silver-level certification
requires that a school attain 350
points or more.
Certified schools excelled in
areas such as improving energy
efficiency and health and wellness, integrating sustainability

into student learning and reducing waste. Randall Solomon, codirector of the Sustainable Jersey
program, congratulated the certified schools.
I commend the schools that
have achieved certification for
their demonstrated commitment
toward the long-term goal of a
sustainable
New
Jersey,
Solomon said.
We are proud of the leadership provided by the boards of education and their superintendents, as well as the contributions
of principals, teachers, education
support professionals and parents, that made this important
milestone a reality, said Dr.
Lawrence S. Feinsod, New Jersey
School Boards Association executive director. We congratulate
the schools on achieving Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification.
Tabernacle Township School
District and the certified schools
were honored at a reception during the New Jersey School Boards
Association Workshop 2016 Conference on Oct. 25 in Atlantic
City.

shooters and goalkeeper. We practiced penalty kicks, and the shooters seemed relaxed and not
phased by the circumstances,
Jensen said.
The lineup was Hoffman, Anna
Yannessa, Emily Meale and
Brown taking the penalty kicks
against Highland, with goalkeep-

er Samantha Andrews defending

Senecas goal. Jensen said the
girls had a combination of steady
nerves and a consistent shot.
Andrews made the first save,
taking a bit of pressure off the
penalty kickers to follow. When
she made the second save, victory
was ensured. Brown made the
final goal, with a 4-2 outcome and
a win for the Golden Eagles.
The girls celebrated their accomplishment with screams,
hugs and cupcakes.
Jensen expressed he was so
proud of not only how the girls
played that game, but how they
conducted themselves throughout the season.
They were accountable to
each other, they played with passion and intensity, they were mature and confident. With those ingredients, they can accomplish
any goal they set for themselves,
Jensen said.
The girls advanced to the state
semifinals, competing in the New
Jersey Group 3 semifinals on Nov.
15 against Wall High School, the
No. 6 ranked team in New Jersey.

The girls got a huge confidence

boost in the beginning when they
scored not even a minute into the
game, but Wall came back with a
score of their own. The game
went into overtime where Seneca
lost to Wall, 2-1.
This was really a special

group of players. They had such

determination and focus throughout the season and played some
really excellent soccer. We had
great leadership from the seniors,
and this team was so much fun to
be around, Jensen said.

Borucki: Our job

BORUCKI
Continued from page 6

policy.
After public comment, board
member Joseph Borucki of Evesham motioned to not change the
districts policy. He said this is not
an educational issue, but an extracurricular one, as extracurricular participation is not a right,
but a privilege for LRHSD students. He said the policy is designed specifically for students to

ensure a level playing field. He

also mentioned a lot of schools in
Burlington County have similar
policies.
Borucki said a similar discussion about a homeschool student
from Marlton who wanted to play
for Cherokee High School was
brought up in 2007. The board discussed it and decided to stand by
the policy then, and Borucki felt
the board should stand by it now.
Our job as a school board is to
properly enforce policies. We
have to do it consistently, legally,
and we have to do it unbiasedly,
Borucki said.
