1. In the continuous-time framework the complex exponential has the form x (t) = est .
Its discrete-time counterpart x [n] can be thought of as the sampled version of x (t),
obtained by replacing t by nT, where T is the sampling period. Thus, an alternate form
for the discrete-time exponential is x [n] = esTn . It is easy to go from one form to the
other. Let x [n] = en . Express it as z0n and find z0 . Next, let x [n] = 2n . Express it in the
form ecn and find c.
2. The discrete-time sinusoids given below are either in the form cos(n + ) or sin(n +
), where can be any finite value. Express each signal in its corresponding alternate
form, i.e., either cos(1 n + 1 ) or sin(1 n + 1 ), where 1 [0, ]. (a) sin(1.6n + ),
(b) cos(2.3n + ), (c) cos(34.6991n + ), and (d) sin(2.3n + ).
3. A real-valued sinusoid has frequency = 2, 3, 5, 3.2, 22.1327, + 2. To
produce an identical signal in each case, what should the corresponding frequency be
if it is restricted to the range [0, ] ? In which cases does the phase change sign?
4. What values of cause the DT sinusoid cos(0 n + ) to be a simple shifted version of
cos(0 n) ?
5. Find the simplified expression for x [n] where x [n] = cos(0.6n + 6 ) + 3 cos(1.4n +
3 ) 2 cos(0.6n 6 ).
6. Express the following exponentials in the form e j0 n+ where 0 [, ): (a) e j8.2n+ ,
(b) e j4n , (c) e j1.95n , and (d) e j10.7n . Repeat the problem if we require 0 [0, 2 ).
7. Consider x [
n] = cos(0 n) for various values of 0 in the set {0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.8, 0.9, ,
1.1, 1.2, 2}. What is the period of x [] in each case?
8. Determine the period of x [n] = sin(0.08n). List two other distinct sinusoids that have
the same period as x [n].
9. Consider the harmonically related periodic signals xk [n] = cos(2kn/N ), where 0
k N 1. Since xk [n] is real-valued, the highest value of k can be limited to the integer
that is less than or equal to N/2. What is the period of xk [n] for each k when N = 11 and
N = 12? Is there any difference in behaviour when compared with its continuous-time
counterpart?
