Game of Thrones filming locations

The Causeway Coast and Glens is the location for several sets in the HBO hit series,
Game of Thrones. For cast members Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) and Conleth Hill
(Lord Varys), it was something of a homecoming, as they originally hail from Coleraine
and Ballycastle.
1. Dragonstone, Downhill Beach,
Co. Londonderry
One of the most iconic locations, Downhill
Beach is an 11km stretch of sand and surf
located on the Causeway Coast. This
magnificent location is home to Mussenden
a tiny temple perched dramatically on
a 120ft cliff top, high above the Atlantic
Ocean.
Featured Scene
Downhill was illuminated and transformed
into Dragonstone in Season 2. This is the
spot where the old gods burn on the beach,
where Stannis pulls the flaming sword and
Melisandre chants: For the night is dark
and full of terrors.
2. The Stormlands, Larrybane, Carrick-aRede, Co. Antrim
Located along the stunning North Coast
close to Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge lies
10

Causeway Coast and Glens Visitor Guide

Larrybane headland, which used to stretch

out towards Sheep Island. Its large caves
once served as a home to boat builders and
a safe haven from winter storms.
Featured Scene
Larrybane was the dramatic spot chosen
for Renly Baratheons camp in Season 2.
This is where Catelyn Stark agrees a treaty
with Renley on behalf of her son Robb.
You might remember Renly swearing he
will avenge Neds death and bring Catelyn
Joffreys head. And then the drama really
starts to unfold...
3. Pyke, The Iron Islands, Ballintoy
Harbour, Co. Antrim
Ballintoy is situated in one of the most
picturesque parts of the North Antrim
Coast between the Giants Causeway and
Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. This stunning
harbour location has been used for exterior
Pyke shots and as the Iron Islands.

Featured Scene
This picturesque coastal nook is where
Theon Greyjoy arrives back in the Iron
Islands and where he later admires his ship,
the Sea Bitch. This is also where he first
meets his sister Yara.
4. Storms End, Murlough Bay, Co. Antrim
Located in North East County Antrim,
Murlough Bay is an awe-inspiring location.
Murlough is best known for its outstanding
beauty, remoteness and views across the
sea to Rathlin Island and the Mull of Kintyre.
Plus the cows that sometimes graze along
the sandy dunes.
Featured Scene
Murlough Bay becomes the Iron Islands
in Season 3. This is the spot where Theon
Greyjoy rides on the horse with his sister
Yara. Its also the spot where Davos
Seaworth is shipwrecked after the battle of
Blackwater Bay.
5. The Stormlands, Cushendun Caves,
Co. Antrim
The caves at Cushendun were formed over
a period of 400 million of years and are a
product of extreme weather conditions.
They can be found just beyond this beautiful
coastal village next to the Cave House.
Featured Scene
In Season 2, Cushendun is where Melisandre
gives birth to the shadow baby after being
brought ashore by Davos Seaworthy.
6. The Kings Road, Dark Hedges,
Co. Antrim
The Dark Hedges is a beautiful avenue of
beech trees, planted by the Stuart family in
the eighteenth century. Two hundred years
later, the Dark Hedges remain a magnificent
sight and have become one of the most
photographed natural phenomena in
Northern Ireland.
Featured Scene
The Dark Hedges live up to their haunting
name in Season 2. These spectacular trees
line the Kings Road as Ayra Stark makes her
escape from Kings Landing. Disguised as a
boy, Ayra travels with Yoren, Gendry, Hot

Pie and all the others off to join the

Night Watch...
7. Runestone, Glenariff, Co Antrim
Sometimes called Queen of the Glens,
Glenariff is the biggest and most popular of
the Glens of Antrim. Glenariff Forest Park
is a popular tourist destination with trails
through the trees and alongside picturesque
waterfalls.
Featured Scene.
In Season 5 Robyn Arran has been sent to
Runestone, where Royces men are training
him to use a sword as Littlefinger, Sansa
Stark and Yohn Royce watch.
8. The Kingdom of Dorne, Portstewart
Strand, Co. Londonderry.
Portstewart Strand is 2 miles of golden
beach backed by a unique sand dune
system.
Featured Scene.
Portstewart Strand was transformed in
Season 5 as Jaime and Bronn come ashore
on Dorne to fight and kill some Dornish
men. Ellaria and the Sandsnakes arrive too.
9. The Dothraki Sea - grasslands far
above the city of Meereen, Binevenagh,
Co. Londonderry.
Binevenagh Mountain, with panoramic
views that stretch for miles straddles the
Derry/Antrim county borders and marks the
edge of the Antrim plateau.
Featured Scene
In Season 5 Danerys finds a wounded
Dragon in his lair. She goes to look for food
and is surrounded by Dothraki bloodriders.

Agherton Old Church

Armoy Round Tower

Coleraine Road, Portstewart, BT55 7HT

181 Glenshesk Road, Armoy, BT53 8RJ

Opposite Flowerfield Arts Centre, the original

Church of Agherton (Ballyaghran) dates from
at least the 1300s. In a field to the east, there
are the remains of a Stone Age Court Tomb
and to the south; a mound marks the spot of
the citadel of Congal Clairingneach, King of
all Ireland in 161 B.C. There is also a Bronze
Age standing stone at the entrance to the
graveyard beside Flowerfield.

In the grounds of St Patricks Church stands

Armoy Round Tower, roughly 1,000 years
old. The upper storey and cone-shaped roof
are missing, but the remains of the lower
part of the tower are in good condition.
A church was founded here by St Olcan,
who was Bishop of Armoy in 460AD and
saved from dying at birth by Saint Patrick.
Excavations at this church in 1997 revealed
the 400-500 year old remains of a leper, an
unusual discovery because normally one so
afflicted was not buried in Church grounds.

Dooeys Cairn
Neolithic Tomb
Close to the village of Dunloy is Dooeys
Cairn (Grid Reference D0216 1830),
a Neolithic tomb dating from around
2000-4000BC. It is named after Mr Andy
Dooey on whose land it stood and who
was instrumental in having it excavated in
1935. At that time various artefacts were
discovered such as polished axe heads and
flint arrows. When further excavations took
place in 1975, traces of cereal seeds were
discovered implying that early agriculture
had been introduced to the region. That
year, the Dooey family handed the site over
to State Care and it is maintained by the
Environment and Heritage Service.

Dunseverick Castle
(Part of the North Antrim Cliff Path)
W: www.walkni.com
All that remains of the Castle is a small
wall on a high crag that faces the ocean.
You would never guess that a distinguished
castle once stood on that spot and that
the area was popular enough to attract a
number of visits from Saint Patrick himself.
The remains of the castle are close to the
little fishing harbour. Picnic area, parking
and access to the coastal path.

15th Century tomb of Cooey-na-gall, a local
OCahan Chieftain, who died in 1385.

Errigal Old Church

Ballyrogan Road, Ballintemple,
Garvagh, BT51 5BQ
It is believed that a small church was built
at Errigal around 560 A.D. The Church was
attacked and rebuilt many times, until it
was completely destroyed after the 1641
rebellion and a new Church was then built
in the village of Garvagh in 1670. In the
early days, the Church was called Errigal
Adamnan after St. Adamnan - its patron.
Another feature bearing the patrons name
is Onans Rock, an inauguration stone
within Gortnamoyagh Forest, found near
the old Church and unusual because of the
footprints (said to be Adamnans) impressed
on the rock.

Mountsandel Fort

Mountsandel Road, Coleraine,

BT52 1JN
T: 028 2955 6000
E: customer.forestservice@dardni.gov.uk
W: www.forestserviceni.gov.uk
Mountsandel Fort is located just south
of the town of Coleraine overlooking the
famous Salmon Leap on the River Bann
at Castleroe. Dating back to the Iron Age,
Mountsandel Fort is beside the Mesolithic
site of the first hunter-gatherers in Ireland,
where excavations have revealed evidence
of a Middle Stone Age settlement from
as long ago as 7700-7400BC. Visitors to
Mountsandel Wood today can enjoy a
circular walk within the woodland, which
is interspersed with interpretative panels,
highlighting the history and biodiversity of
the site. There is a commanding view of the
town from the summit of the fort , which
is thought to date to the Anglo-Norman
period. Admission is free.

The Phoenix Peace

Fountain
Anderson Park, Circular Road,
Coleraine, BT52 1PS
Inspired by the Northern Ireland peace
process of May 1998, the fountain is a gift
from the communities of the United States
to the communities of Northern Ireland. It is
constructed using thousands of surrendered
firearms from across the United States. The
design incorporates different aspects from
each of the six counties and former 26 local
government areas of Northern Ireland, and
is symbolic of the peace that has now been
achieved.

Red Bay Castle

Off the A2 Road, BT44 0SH
The ruins of Red Bay Castle are located on
the main Coast Road between Waterfoot
and Cushendall (on the high ground above
the Red Arch). The history of the site dates
back 750 years when John and Walter
Bisset, banished from Scotland in 1224 for
the murder of their uncle, purchased the
Glens of Antrim from Richard De Burgo and
are said to have built the castle on the site.
The existing castle is believed to have been
built by Sir James MacDonnell around 1561.
It was the scene for various struggles and
battles in the late 16th Century and was
abandoned about 1600.

The church is located in the centre of

Coleraine on the original site of the Early
Christian Church founded by St Patrick in
the 5th Century A.D. Part of the present
church dates from 1613 and it contains
many fine and poignant memorials.
Outside, to the rear of the church at
Anderson Park, are the remains of the
earthen wall or rampart that surrounded
Coleraine in the early 1600s. Visitors are
very welcome but are advised to check
opening times by telephoning the Parish
Office. Free summer recitals take place
every Thursday during July and August.

The Roe Valley Country Park acts as a

living history of Limavady. Take a step into
the past and imagine local genius
J.E. Ritter supplying the first direct current
of electricity in Ulster to Limavady. Close
your eyes and hear the hustle and bustle
of linen production in days gone by, many
relics of which are still visible today.
Imagine the heroic leap of the dog across
the river to the original OCahans Castle,
giving Limavady its name. Here in idyllic
surroundings, the visitor can picnic or simply
enjoy the beauty of their environment.
The Visitor and Heritage Centre hosts a
permanent educational exhibition. Ritters
Tearoom is adjacent to the centre. See

Rathlin Island

Rathlin Island lies just over six miles from Ballycastle and fourteen
miles from the Mull of Kintyre, Scotland. Rathlin Island is situated
within the Antrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. It is popular with bird watchers, geologists, botanists, divers
and sea anglers anyone with a love for rugged wild scenery. It
includes several important natural heritage sites and is particularly
internationally important for its flora, seabird colonies and in some
cases its unique underwater marine life. In addition to this it has
many interesting listed buildings and a strong cultural heritage, with
storytelling, songs and music. Legend has it that Rathlin Island was
the stopping place for Robert the Bruce and the famed spider.
To reach the Island, take the ferry from
Ballycastle across to Rathlin to the
harbour at Church Bay, the trip takes
about 25 minutes on the Rathlin Express.
As you sail along, you can identify the
main features of the North Antrim Coast
with Fair Head towering above the sea,
marking the topmost corner of Ulster.
Slough na Morra, swallow of the sea, is
a whirlpool in the sea south of Rue Point,
the southern tip of Rathlin.

You dont have to do the round trip in one

day: there are places to stay and a pub
and caf at the harbour. Visitors cars are
restricted, so the roads are quiet and ideal
for walking and cycling. On the island you
can follow the Sustrans National Cycle
Network Route 93 to the west lighthouse,
east lighthouse and Rue lighthouse.

Dark Hedges
Bregagh Road, Stranocum, Ballymoney,
BT53 8PX
T: 028 2766 0230
This beautiful avenue of beech trees
was planted by the Stuart family in the
eighteenth century. It was intended as a
compelling landscape feature to impress
visitors as they approached the entrance to
their home, Gracehill House. Two centuries
later, the trees remain a magnificent sight
and have become known as the Dark
Hedges. The Dark Hedges is one of the
most photographed natural phenomena in
Northern Ireland and a popular attraction
for tourists from across the world. The road
is reputedly haunted by a spectral Grey
Lady who appears at dusk among the trees.
She silently glides along the roadside and
disappears as she passes the last beech tree.
It has been a filming location for the very
popular Game of Thrones.

at their leisure.
The Lower Bann Cycleway is a 45 mile
linear cycle route between Toome and
Castlerock. The scenic route follows the
Lower Bann River corridor from Lough

Neagh to where the river enters the Atlantic

Ocean at the Barmouth near Castlerock.
The low-lying landscape of this river
corridor provides a gentle cycle, leaving
cyclists to enjoy the route at their leisure
and take in the scenery of the Lower Bann.
Other cycling opportunities include two
signed cycle routes centred on Garvagh;
The Eagles Glen Cycle Route (approx.
15 miles) explores the historic Errigal
landscape centred on the picturesque
Glenullin Valley, providing cyclists with
superb views of the northern Sperrins
foothills. The Bann Valley Cycle Route
(approx. 15 miles), linking Garvagh
and Kilrea, enables cyclists to enjoy the
quiet country roads traversing the fertile
landscape of the Bann Valley, with views of
the Bann corridor and beyond towards the
Antrim Hills.

The Meadows & Moorlands Cycle Route

(25 miles) links Ballymoney to the meadows
and moorlands of North County Antrim.
The area has a variety of raths, mottes and
standing stones, testimony to an earlier
age. The route is best travelled in an anticlockwise direction as this gives the best
views of the villages and Antrim plateau.
The route mainly uses country lanes but
care should be taken whilst crossing main
roads and on the short sections of B roads
near Ballymoney.
The River Cycle Route (approx. 15 miles)
along the quiet roads on the East bank
of the River Bann provides a great family
cycle. The route takes you from Ballymoney,
through Balnamore village towards
Drumaheglis Marina and Caravan Park set
on the banks of the River Bann. The quiet
roads heading south towards Kilrea offer
good views of the river and on the return

Loughareema
Vanishing Lake

Portbraddan

Loughareema Rd, Cushendall, BT44 0TA

Picturesque fishing village, under the cliff

at the end of White Park Bay. The name
means port of the salmon, it still has an
operational slipway for salmon fishermen.

A lonely and mysterious Moorland Lake,

sometimes called the Vanishing Lake. One
day a sparkling lake, a few days later a bed
of cracked mud and not a drop of water in
sight, this is indeed a mysterious place.

Portbraddan Rd, Bushmills, BT57 8TA

Portbraddan is noted as the location

for the smallest Church in Ireland, St
Gobbans. Limited parking and access to
the coastal path.

Towns and Villages

Ballycastle

Bushmills

There is a wealth of activities from golf,

tennis, sailing and watersports or less
challenging pursuits such as shopping or
a leisurely stroll along the beach. Enjoy
delicious homemade ice-cream or end
the day with a meal or drink in one of the
many relaxing restaurants and lively pubs.
Tradition and culture run parallel with
modern living in this unique town making
Ballycastle a must to visit, any time of
the year.

Bushmills, home to the worlds oldest

licensed distillery, is steeped in history. At
least 7 mills were sited on the river Bush
processing corn, flax, spades and ironwork,
timber, paper and eventually in the 1880s
a generating station to power the new tram
linking Portrush to the Giants Causeway
the worlds first hydroelectric railway
system.

Ballymoney
Ballymoney town boasts Riverside Park - 40
acres of parkland complete with trim trails
and green gym. The newly re-developed
Megaw Park offers soccer pitches, tennis
courts and interactive play equipment
and tone zone. Visit the Memorial
Gardens where people from all over the
world have come to pay their respects to
racing brothers Joey and Robert Dunlop.
Balllmoneys retail centre offers more than
the typical high street experience with a
charming mix of family-run shops and a
vibrant caf culture.

Vacant buildings are even attracting visitor
attention and world-wide publicity as the
windows and doors have been imaginatively
used to re-create old grocer/pubs and shops
while replicas of the panels can be found in
Silver Springs, Maryland, 10 miles north of
Washington DC.

Castlerock

Cushendall

Castlerock is a small, quiet resort situated

just a kilometre from where the River Bann
meets the sea at The Barmouth with a fine
beach and championship golf course. It is
an attractive, peaceful village in which to
enjoy forest and coastal walks, birdwatching,
angling or tennis. The beautiful beach and
attractions at nearby Downhill offer some of
the most scenic views in Northern Ireland.

and Cushendun)

Coleraine
Coleraine is the principal town on the
Causeway Coast. Situated on the banks
of the River Bann, it boasts an attractive
pedestrian area with award winning floral
displays. Soaked in history, with charm and
character, the town offers a unique mix of
old and new.

Cushendall is a conservation town and

is known locally as The Capital of
the Glens at the foot of Lurigethan
Mountain. Francis Turnley, who built the
prominent Curfew Tower in its centre in
1817, owned Cushendall, once known as
Newtownglens. Troublesome citizens
were confined in this tower. There is a
minor road from the shore near Cushendall
Golf Club that winds uphill to the remains
of the ancient church and graveyard of
Layde, a quiet place from which to enjoy
views of Red Bay and the lush countryside
surrounding Cushendall.

Cushendun
(Off the A2 coast road between Cushendall and Ballycastle)
This attractive village, owned by the National Trust, is best known for its unusual Cornishstyle cottages, (the work of Clough William Ellis between 1912 and 1925). The ruins
of Castle Carra stand in a field above Rockport House at the north end of Cushendun
Bay. This was a 15th Century MacDonnell stronghold. There are delightful walks along
Glendun River to Glendun viaduct, a most impressive structure built in 1839 by the world
renowned English Architect Sir Charles Lanyon of the 19th Century.
Cushendun Caves in the village were used as one of the film locations for the popular
Game of Thrones TV series. Contact Visitor Information Centres for a full Game of
