What Is A Theodolite?
Theodolites are electronic devices that are widely used for the measurement of
vertical and horizontal angles for mapping applications, and in the construction
industry. Accurate measurement of angles is essential for huge construction
projects. These are important surveying instruments used in the engineering
and surveying disciplines, especially in remote locations. Theodolites have been
modified for numerous other specific functions in the rocket technology and
meteorology. Furthermore, the accuracy of these instruments has improved
significantly over the years. Though the theodolites have been used for a long
period, their basic function has not changed much. The leveling systems have
been improved to be more accurate and reliable, and the newer models employ
infrared based technology.
Theodolite Components
A basic theodolite normally consists of a small sized telescope that is linked with
mechanisms to measure horizontal and vertical angles. The theodolite telescope is fixed
within perpendicular axes, namely the vertical axis and the horizontal, or trunion, axis. The
theodolite is fixed on a base that can be rotated on a tripod by a leveling system. The angle
to the desired point is measured by pointing the telescope to that point. The angle can be
read on the telescope scale.
A dumpy level,is an optical instrument used to establish or verify points in the same
horizontal plane. It is used in surveying and building with a vertical staff to measure
height differences and to transfer, measure and set heights.
PREF
Tap the "PREF" button in the upper left corner of the screen to see
settings for the compass (true or magnetic), units (ft or m), camera
mode and options, angle display (degrees or percent grade), datums,
and position format. This section of the app also provides a link to
this help page.
MAP
ZERO
Tapping this button will zero all angles at a given orientation of the
device, thereby showing angles relative to that reference until you
tap the button again. Zero mode cannot be activated when the A-B
calculator is in use.
A-B
CAL
Tapping this button will bring up a calibration screen, where you can
aim/position your device camera to align with a known level
horizon/elevation reference. The calibration procedure will then
measure offsets in the acclerometer, gyro, and camera hardware and
use them to correct measurements to match the level reference.
LENS
This button toggles colored lens filters over the screen, which may be
helpful to preserve night vision or improve usability in low light
situations. Available colors are red, green, gold, and gray. The same
button toggles the display back to normal.
