PETE 664 Winter 2017/ EK

Assignment No:1
(Due on Monday, January 30 @ 3.00 pm)

a-) Using the off-set well data given below determine the coefficients of Bourgoyne and
Young drilling model (i.e., a1, a2, ,a8) which would be applicable in this field.

b-) Determine the optimum weight on bit and rotating speed which would give you
minimum drilling cost for drilling at 14,000 ft depth. Present a table showing the
cost/ft at different weight on bit and rotary speed combination (see for Example Table 8
in Bourgoyne and Young, JPT August 1974).

Additional data for part b:

Depth : 14,000 ft.

Bit Diameter : 7 7/8 in.
Bit Dull Condition: New Bit
ECD : 16.7 ppg
Pore pressure gradient @ 14,000 ft : 16.2 ppg
Reynolds Number Function:1.2
Bit Cost: $9500
Rig Operational Cost: $ 2,000/hr
Trip Time: 0.0015*Dout , hrs
Connection Time: 3 min/single
