B Arch Structure 3

The document provides 5 questions related to structural design for a B.Arch examination. Question 1 deals with welded connections and designing a double cover butt joint and lap joint. Question 2 covers failure modes in tension and designing a double angle tension member. Question 3 defines column buckling and slenderness ratio, and designs a column. Question 4 describes elements of a plate girder and designs a steel joist. Question 5 shows roof truss types and discusses loads and combinations for truss design.

B.ARCH.

EXAMINATION NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2016

AR-304: STRUCTURE-III

TIME-THREE HOURS
MAXIMUM MARKS-50

NOTE- Attempt five questions. All questions carry equal marks. Use of IS: 800 and
IS: 875 and steel table is permitted. Missing data (if any) may be suitably assumed.
Draw neat sketches wherever required.

1. (a) Discuss advantages and disadvantages of welded connections.

3

1. (b) Two plates 10mm and 18mm thick are to be joined by double cover butt joint.
Design the joint for the given data. Factored design load 750KN, bolt diameter
20mm. Grade of steel Fe410, grade of bolts is 4.6. Use 2 cover plates (one on each
side) of 8mm thick. 7

OR

Design a lap joint between the two plates each of width 120mm, if the thickness of
one plate is 16mm and the other is 12mm. The joint has to transfer a design load of
160KN. The plates are of Fe410 grade. Use bearing type bolts.
7

2. (a) Explain different modes of failure for members in tension.

3 2. (b) Design a double angle tension member connected on each side of a 10mm
thick gusset plate, to carry an axial factored load of 375 KN. Use 20mm black bolts.
Assume shop connection. 7

OR

A tension member of 0.95 m long to resist a service dead load of 20KN and a
service live load of 60KN. Design a rectangular bar of standard structural steel of
grade Fe410. Assume that the member is connected by one line of 16mm diameter
bolts of grade 4.6. 7

3.(a) Define i) buckling of column ii) slenderness ratio of column

3

3. (b)Design a stanchion 3.5 m long in a building, subjected to a factored load of

550KN. Both the end

of the stanchion are effectively restrained in direction and position. Use steel of
grade Fe410. 7

OR
Determine the design axial load capacity of the column ISHB 300@577N/m if the
length of column is 3m and its both ends pinned.
7

4.(a) What are the various elements of plate girder. Explain with neat sketches.
3

4.(b) A simply supported steel joist of 4.0 m effective span is laterally supported
throughout. It carries a total uniformly distributed load of 40KN (inclusive of self
weight). Design an appropriate section using steel of grade Fe410.
7

OR

Design a laterally unsupported beam for the following data.

7

Effective span: 4 m

Maximum bending moment: 550KNm

Maximum shear force: 200KN

Steel of grade: Fe410

5.(a)Draw neat sketches of various types of roof trusses.

3

5.(b)Discuss various loads and load combinations for design of roof trusses.
7

OR

Determine the design loads on the purlins of an industrial building near

Visakhapatnam, given: 7

Class of building: General with life of 50 years.

Terrain: Category 2 Pitch: 1/5

Maximum dimension: 40 m Sheeting: A.C. sheets

Width of building: 15 m Spacing of purlins: 1.35 m

Height at eye level: 8 m Spacing of trusses: 4 m

Topography: less than 3 Span of truss: 15 m

Permeability: Medium
