You are on page 1/ 2

Part A

1. different steel structure forms type of steel

2. advantages of welded connection over bolted connection .failures
3. Compression member more critical than tension member. Buckling classes in column how
do they affect compression
4. Difference Gusset base and slab diagram
5. Lateral torsional buckling

Part B

1. Steel structure forms and their applicability and types of steel and their applicability
2. Plastic analysis continuous beam questions.
3. In a roof truss a tie member consists of an angle section 80 X 80 X 8 mm. Design
its welded connection to a gusset plate 10mm thick using side weld only. Assume Fe410
grade of steel and shop welding. The force in member being 100KN.
4. A diagonal member of the truss is an ISA 65x65x6 mm welded in field to a gusset plate 8mm
thick. The grade of steel used for angle is Fe410. Design the joint to full strength of angle. a)If
fillet weld is provided along the length of member
5. Consider a plate bracket 10 mm thick connected to the flange of a columnISHB200 @37.3
kg/m by 6 bolts of grade 4.6 as shown in fig what should be the minimum size of bolts so
that connection is safe.

6. Design a stanchion 3.5 m long, in a building, subjected to a factored load of 550 KN. Both the
ends of the stanchion are effectively restrained in direction and position. Use steel of grade
Fe 410.
7. Calculate the design compressive load for a stanchion 350@ 710.2N/m, 3.5m high. The
column is restrained in direction and position at both the ends. It is to be noted as an
uncased column in a single storey building. Use Fe410.
8. An ISHB250 @51kg/m is strengthened by welding a plate 300mm x 10 mm to each flange
symmetrically. Find the design factored maximum axial compressive load which the section
can take safely, if it is 3 m long. Its both ends are restrained against position but not against
direction.
9. Design a slab base for a column consisting of a single ISHB300 @0.577 KN/m and carrying an
axial load of 1600KN (factored). The column is to be supported on a concrete footing with
permissible bearing pressure 4KN/m.
10. Design a slab base for a column of section ISHB 300@58.78 kg/m, carrying a factored load of
1000kN. Bearing capacity of soil may be taken as 300kN/m2. Assume Fe 410 grade for steel
and M15 for concrete.
11. List out various elements of the roof truss and give their design requirement.
12. Explain “buckling of web” and “crippling of web” with diagrams.

Part C

1. Classification of sections
2. Portal frame and continuous beam questions (Notes)
3. Two plates each of 10mm thickness are butt jointed with double cover each
6mm thick, if the joint is single bolted and bolts are of 20mm diameter provided
at 60mm pitch, calculate the efficiency of the joint. The bolts are of grade 4.6 and steel of Fe
410.
4. Design a laced column with two channel sections placed back to back of length 4m to carry
axial loaf of 1500 KN. The column is free in position and in direction at both the ends.
5. Design a built column 10m long to carry factored axial load of 1080kN. The column is
restrained in position but not in direction at both the ends with two channels placed back to
back. Provide single lacing system with bolted connections. Assume Fe 410 and bolts of
grade4.6
6. Design a laterally restrained simply supported beam to carry a uniformly distributed load of
44 KN/m. The effective span of the beam is 8 m. A bearing length of 75 mm is provided at
the supports.
7. Design a laterally unsupported beam of effective span 4m for the following data.
Maximum bending moment: M=550kN-m
Maximum shear force: V = 200kN
Grade of steel: Fe410. (Notes)
8. A column has section ISHB 250@54.72 kg/m and is subjected to an axial factored load of
1200kN. Design the gusseted base for column.
