CE 490: Capacity Assignment

1) Determine level of service and free flow speed for an older

freeway with the following characteristics:
traffic volume = 4200 vehicles per hour in one
direction
three lanes in each direction
grade = 2%, 2 miles in length
proportions of traffic:
passenger cars = 80%
trucks = 15%
buses = 3%
recreational vehicles = 2%
lane width = 11 feet
experienced drivers (adj=1.0)
a retaining wall, just 2 feet outside the right lane
base free flow speed = 70 mph
peak hour factor = 1.0
interchange density of 0.50 interchanges per mile
Compute by hand and verify using HCS-2000 software (operations analysis).

2) A rural two lane, class 1 highway, ten miles long in rolling terrain
is 20 ft. wide with 6 ft. shoulders and occasional obstructions 2 ft.
from either edge has a projected ADT of 3500 veh./day (peak hour
traffic is 15% of ADT). The highway has a base free flow speed of
55 mph, a peak hour factor of 1.0 and eight access points per mile.
The highway carries 15% trucks, 3% recreational vehicles and no
buses. The directional split is 60-40 during peak periods, and there are 30% no passing zones. What
is v/c and the corresponding level of service during the peak hour with the given conditions? (Use the
two way segment approach.)

3) Compute the number of lanes required (design analysis) and the expected passenger car speed for a
highway designed to operate at a level of service "D" for a freeway, given:
base free flow speed = 70 mph
lane width = 10 ft.
shoulders are more than 6 feet wide on both sides
10% trucks, no RV's, no buses
peak hour factor = 0.9
design hourly volume = 2000 in each direction
interchange density = 0.50
drivers are experienced (adj =1.0) for a:

a) 5 mile level segment

b) 5 mile segment at 4% grade (uphill)
Compute parts a and b by hand and verify using HCS-2000 software (design analysis).
c) Using the HCS-2000 software, find the design volume (to the nearest 100 vehicles per
hour) for the 5 mile, 4% grade where the number of lanes required goes from 2 to 3 at
LOS D. (this will be a trial and error process)
