on Stage-Discharge relationship(Rating curve)

1. Stage discharge data at site are given below. Find the stage (Ho)
corresponding to zero discharge.
i. Develop Rating Curve Equation for this river at the given site and
check the adequacy of the equation by calculating R2.
ii. Using the rating curve equation that you developed , find the
discharge in the river when the stage is at: H= 29m and H=37m

35.38 456
36.42 533
38.01 590
39.05 680
39.55 690
Solution

Step1. Draw Stage (H) Versus Discharge (Q) relationship on the Arithmetic paper.

Assume the initial stage (Ho) at discharge equal to zero (Q=0m3/s).

This can be done by extend the graph to y-axis at Q =0m3/s, take reading
for initial stage (Ho) approximation.

Thus, Ho = 24.6m at Q =0m3/s from rating curve below, Then proceed the
work until R2 is nearest to 1.0(best global minima estimation).

R2 should be found between0.6 to 1.0.

Step2. Determine rating curve constant (n & C)

The discharge through stream can be determined by

stage-discharge relationship which given by rating curve
equation, Q = C(H Ho)n
So, that Rating constant (C and n) should be determined using linear
regression methods. The result would be analyzed in tabular form
below.
S.No stage(H) Discharge(Q) (H-HO) X=log(H-Ho) Y=log(Q) X^2 Y^2 XY

12 39.55 690 14.95 1.175 2.839 1.380 8.059 3.335

pg. 2
Recap the result: Number of sample data: N=12

X = 10.046 (X)2 = 100.917 X2 = 9.758

Y = 26.485 (y)2 = 701.433 y2 = 63.257 X Y = 24.692

Computation of (n)
...
n= = = .
( )^ ..

Computation of (C)
...
b= = = .

Now, from relation of linear regression, b = logC

b = 0.642 = logC , C = antilog(0.642) = 4.385

Therefore, rating constant to develop Rating curve equation are:

n =1.87 and C = 4.385.

Check for adequacy of the rating equation by computing correlation

coefficient (R2)
...
= =
[ ( )^][ ( )^] [..[..]

.
R2 = =0.99049 >0.6 or 99.049% which is more nearest to 1 or 100%.
.
Therefore, good correlation and the linear relationship is appropriate for the
above data. So, the rating curve equation developed so preferable.

Step3. Summary:

i. Stage corresponding to zero discharge. Ho = 24.6m

Rating constant: n = 1.87 and C = 4.385, check for R2 = 0.99045
Rating curve equation: Q = 4.385(H-24.6)1.87
ii. Discharge at H= 29m, Q = 4.385*(29 -24.6)1.87 = 70.021m3/s
Discharge at H=37m, Q= 4.385*(37-24.6)1.87 = 486.036m3/s

Example2.(velocity-area method)
The rating curve of a current meter used for measuring velocity in a small
river is given as V=0.62N+0.032 m/s, where N is the rev/sec. The depth of
flow is measured above the river bed and the velocity is measured at the mid
of the sections.Use mid section method

A) Draw the water surface profile of the river at this x-section

B) Calculate the discharge of the river.
