A Semi Detailed Lesson Plan in

Mathematics I

I. Objectives:
At the end of the period, the students will be able to:
a. define x- and y- intercepts correctly.
b. find the x- and y intercepts of the given linear equation.
c. graph at least 2 linear equation accurately using the x- and y-
intercepts.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: The Intercepts
Reference: Algebra I by SJ-Pilao
Multiple Intelligence: Logical and Mathematical
Values Integrated: Hope

III. Procedure:
A. Motivation
Let the students plot the points given by the teacher in the Cartesian plane
and connect these points according to its alphabetical order.

B. Presentation
Guide questions:
1. Do you know how to graph an equation?
2. How to graph an equation using intercepts?
Consider the equation 5x + 3y = 15. Find the x- and y-intercepts of this equation
and sketch the graph.
To find x intercept, To find y intercept,
Let y = 0: Let x = 0:
5x + 3y =15 5x + 3y =15
5x + 3(0) = 15 5(0) +3y =15
5x = 15 3y =15
x=3 y=5
Therefore, the x intercept is 3 Therefore, the y intercept is
and the graph crosses the x-axis 5and the graph crosses they-axis
at (3, 0). at (0, 5).
Graph of 5x + 3y = 15.
Guide question:
3. Based on the given example, how do you define x- and y- intercepts?
The x intercept is the abscissa of the point (x, o) where a graph
intersects the x axis.
The y- intercept is the ordinate of the point (0, y) where a graph
intersects the y axis.

C. Application
Find the x- and y- intercepts of the equation 2x + 3y = 6, and sketch
the graph.
Solution:
x intercept y intercept,
Let y = 0: Let x = 0:
2x + 3y =6 2x + 3y =6
2x + 3(0) = 6 2(0) +3y =6
2x = 6 3y =6
x=3 y=2
Therefore, the x Therefore, the y
intercept is 3 and the intercept is 2 and the
graph crosses the x- graph crosses they-
axis at (3, 0). axis at (0, 2).

Graph of 2x + 3y = 6.
IV. Evaluation:

Find the x and y intercepts of the following equations below and sketch
each graph in the Cartesian plane.

1. 2x + y = 6
2. y = 6x + 5
3. 8x + y = 4

V. Assignment:

Find the x and y intercepts of the following equations below and sketch
each graph in the Cartesian plane.

1. y = x + 5
2. 3x 6y = 12
