Lesson Plan in Mathematics

This lesson plan teaches students how to factor polynomials using the greatest common monomial factor (GCMF) method in 3 steps: 1) Find the GCMF of all terms, 2) Divide each term by the GCMF, 3) Group the factors to write the factored form. Examples factor 2x^2 + 4x and 6x + 2. Students will practice this through an activity identifying common items and factoring practice problems. The lesson evaluates students by having them complete a factoring table and assigns a take-home study of factoring the difference of two squares.

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to;
1. factor completely using Common Monomial Factor
2. find factors of polynomials using Common Monomial Factor
3. solve problems involving polynomials and their factors.

II – Subject Matter
Topics: Algebra: Factoring- Common Monomial Factor
Reference: Math Learner Module
Materials: Laptop, Projector, index card
Time frame: 1hr
Values Integration: Patience, Honest

III- Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities
A.1 Prayer
A.2 Greetings
A.3 Checking of Attendance
A.4 Collecting/Checking of Assignments
A.5 Review
-Multiplication of Polynomials
1. 2 x ( x +2 )=2 x 2+ 4 x
2. 2 ( 3 x +1 )=6 x +2

B. Activity 1: Finding Common: The learners will write their favorite breakfast in
the index card. They will group of 3 members.
Description: The task in this activity is to identify common things that are present in
your index card.

1. What are the things common?

2. Are there things that make you different?
3. Can you spot things that are found on one but not on the
other two?
4. What are the things common to two but are not found on the
other?

Example: 1 cup of rice, 2 boiled egg

Activity 2: Finding Common

Description: Your task in this activity is to identify common things that are present in the
three pictures.

1. What are the things common to these pictures?

2. Are there things that make them different?
3. Can you spot things that are found on one picture but not on the
other two?
4. What are the things common to two pictures but are not found on the
other?

Activity 3: Finding Common

Description: Your task in this activity is to identify common things that are present in the
three pictures.

1. What are the things common to these pictures?

2. Are there things that make them different?
3. Can you spot things that are found on one picture but not on the
other two?
4. What are the things common to two pictures but are not found on the
other?

C. Discussion
• Recall: Factors of a number are the numbers that divide the original number evenly.
• Writing a number as a product of factors is called a factorization of the number.
• The prime factorization of a number is the factorization of that number written as a
product of prime numbers.
• Common factors are factors that two or more numbers have in common.
• The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is the largest common factor.

The process of finding the factors of an expression is called factoring, which is

the reverse process of multiplication. A prime number is a number greater than 1 which
has only two positive factors: 1 and itself.

Ex: 1. 2 x ( x +2 )=2 x 2+ 4 x
2. 2 ( 3 x +1 )=6 x +2

Complete the table to practice this type of factoring.

Polynomial Greatest Common Quotient of Factored

Monomial Factor Polynomial and Form
(CMF) CMF
2 x2 + 4 x 2x ( x +2 ) 2 x ( x +2 )
6 x +2 2 ( 3 x+ 1 ) 2 ( 3 x +1 )

The previous activity gave us the idea about the Greatest Common Monomial Factor
that appears in every term of the polynomial. Study the illustrative examples on how
factoring the Greatest Common Monomial Factor is being done.

Factor 1. 2 x2 + 4 x

Find the greatest common factor

2 x2 =2. x . x
4 x=2.2 . x
2. x=2 x GCMF

Divide each term by 2 x

2 x2 2. x . x¿ ¿x
2 x2.x

4 x 2.2 . x ¿ ¿2
2 x2.x

Factor 2. 6 x +2

Find the greatest common factor

6 x=3.2 . x
2=2
2=2 GCMF

Divide each term by 2

6 x 3.2 . x
¿ ¿3 x
22

22 ¿ ¿1
22

D. Analysisp
1. What is Factoring?
2. How did you factor the polynomials in using GCMF?
3. Why we study this topic? Is this important to our country?

E. Abstraction
To Factor the polynomials using Greatest Common Monomial Factor.
(1) Find the Greatest Common Monomial Factor using Greatest Common
Factor each term.
(2) Find Quotient of Polynomial, divide each term by GCMF.

F. Application/Seatwork
Direction: Factor the following polynomials to decode the word. Choose the
letters below.

S U N
5 y 2+ 10 15 b3 −3 b 6 a b 2−3 a2 b

A. 5(5 y +2)

B. 3 b−1

I. 3(5 b 3−1)

N. 3 ab(2b−a)

O. 5 b3 (3 b 3−1)
S. 5( y 2 +2)

R. 3 b(5 b 2+ 1)

T. 3 ab( 2b+ a)

U. 3 b(5 b 2−1)
IV- Evaluation

Direction: Complete the table to this type of factoring.

Polynomial Greatest Common Quotient of Factored

Monomial Factor Polynomial and Form
(CMF) CMF
2 y 2−4 x 2 ( y 2−2 x ) 2 ( y 2+ 2 x )
6 x−2 2 ( 3 x−1 ) 2 ( 3 x +1 )
6 xy−10 y 2y 3 x−5 2 y (3 x−5)
