REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

FOREIGN LITERATURE

The Lovely Professional University (2011) promotes a culture of paperless

University. The day to day administration and most of the University procedures are

carried out line. The University Management System (UMS), an online portal University,

is one such innovative step of the University to provide vital information regarding

academics and other University logistics for assisting the University students, their

parents and the staff.

According to Wikipedia (2014), in the past, universities and large school districts

in particular have created their own bespoke student record systems. One such example is

the Repository of Student Information (ROSI) system at University of Toronto. With

growing complexity in the business of educational establishments, most organizations

now choose to buy customizable software and increasing numbers are buying software a

service (SAAS). Most student information systems in use today are server-based, with the

application residing on a central computer server, and being accessed by client

application at various places within and even outside the school. But student information

systems have been moving to the web since the late 1990s and that trend is accelerating

as institutions replace older systems.

According to Rob Allan (2004), Put simply a portal is a presentation layer which

aggregates, integrates, personalizes and presents information, transactions and

applications to the user according to their role and preferences.

According to Ramona Winkler (2005), Traditionally a portal denotes a gate, a

door, or entrance. In the context of the World Wide Web, it is the next logical step in the

evolution to a digital culture. Formerly, portals are defined as search engines where it

offers a full text index of document content. Todays Internet portals offer a more

structured, navigable interface compare to Internet search engines. Internet portal is more

focused on better delivery of specific information among a group with the same interest.

According to Connolly (2002), it is important to understand the differences

between internet web sites, intranet, and portals before developing and integrating portal

technology and enabling Web-based solutions. An Internet is the most basic

manifestation of web technology, providing information through hypertext markup

language (HTML) that allows for cross referencing with hyperlinks. An Intranet website

is one that is containing within an organization. Its purpose is to provide more relevant,

useful web-based solutions to an internal community. A portal, on the other hand, is a

gateway to the web that allows plethora of information available an internet and intranet

websites to be organized and customized to a single entry point.

Morrison (2002) defined as supported the idea of Murray (1999): A portal is an

application that provides a personal and adaptive interface enabling people to discover,

track, and interact with other people, applications, and information relevant to their

interests. Its distinguishing features are:

Personalization for end users.

Organization of the desktop.

Resource division. Tracking of activities.

Access and display of data stores.

Location of important people and things.

According to Heng (2009), he discussed the essential step-by-step guide in

making a website. First, get a domain name. Second, choose a web host and sign up for

an account. Third, design the web pages. Fourth, test your website. Fifth, collect credit

card information in making money. And sixth, get the website noticed.

According to Wikipedia.org that was last updated on February 15, 2010, 3:42 pm,

a web portal, also known as a link page, presents information from diverse sources in a

unified way. Apart from the standard search engine feature, web portals offer other

services such as e-mail, news, stock prices, information, databases and entertainment.

Portals provide a way for enterprises to provide a consistent look and feel with access

control and procedures for multiple applications and databases, which otherwise would

have been different entities altogether.

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to the Online-Student Information System of Benguet State University

(2013) it would be a new way of record management and transaction processing that

would achieve efficiency on processing student information. It would be a great help to

the administrative personnel, academic personnel, grantors or stakeholders, and students

in updating, retrieving and generating student data. The main objective of the study was

to design as a standalone student information system of Benguet State University (2012).

In order to achieve the general objective, the following specific objectives of the study

were identified:

1. To identify the information requirements in the existing student information

system of BSU.

2. To identify the problems encountered in the existing system.

3. To identify the information requirements needed.

4. To determine appropriate security and control measures are needed for student

information system.

5. To determine the benefits of a student information system as perceived by:

a. Administration offices; d. Parents; and

b. Academic offices; e. Students

c. grantors/stakeholders;

According to Swartz(2013), SIS process is typically completed into students

school career and encapsulates each of the facets of knowledge built up and literacy

value, including learning what type of SIS is available, finding and accessing system

sequence, evaluating tools for the information and then synthesizing the student

information system into certain and product for a better career patterns as it seemed like

the ideal project to focus SIS and relate it to ample literacy instruction around. While the

students had all performed database searches before, they were less likely to have taken

advantage of the search management tools available to them through educational

database, how to set up automatic searches to help streamline the research process.

Pacio (2013) on her thesis entitled Online Student Information System of

Benguet State University gave emphasis that as main goal of the school to generate and

disseminate new knowledge and technologies that will promote sustainable resource

development and enrich the competent and effective services geared towards efficiency

and economy which is inconsistent with the existing student information system of the

Kalinga State University Rizal campus.

Cambridge Student Information System

Richard (2012) emphasized that information about students is vital, but

timeconsuming to manage and it is essential that the most effective tools be used to aid

both staff and students go about their work and studies. The Cambridge Student

Information System (CAMSIS) replaced various student records system used by the

colleges, departments and universities. CAMSIS provides comprehensive and accurate

information about student body and also improves data quality, reduce the administrative

burden dramatically and provides better services to both academic staff and students.

Student Information System for the University of the Cordilleras

According to Marrero (2011) in his study entitled Student Information System

for the University of the Cordilleras stressed that the concept of Information Systems

(IS) emerged in the early 1960s. More often, when information system is defined, the

field Information Science is always associated, IS is an academic field that deals with the

generation, collection, organization, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of recorded

knowledge. Furthermore, it is a collection of related components designed to support

operations, management, and decision making in an organization. Generally, IS is

supposed to inform people. Information System supports people or users in making

intelligent decisions based upon the information derived from reliable data.

According to Desousa (2008), Web based application have four core benefits.

These are the following: 1) Compatibility. Web based applications are far more

compatible across platforms than traditional installed software like web browsers. 2)

Efficiency. Everyone hates to deal with files of papers unless they do not have any other

alternatives. The benefit of web based solution makes services and information available

from any web-facilitated Personal Computer (PC) 3) security of live data. Normally in

more complex systems data is moved about separate systems and data sources. In web-

based systems, these systems and processes can often be merged by reducing the need to

move the data around. Web-based application also provide an additional security by

removing the need for the user to have access to the data and back end servers. 4) Cost

Effective. Web-based application can considerably lower the costs because of reduce
