NOTE: THE TIME FOR FORMING A COLD JOINT IN CONCRETE DEPENDS ON THE CONCRETE

TEMPERATURE, THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE, WIND SPEED, CEMENT TYPE, MIX PROPORTIONS, THE
USE OF ADMIXTURES WITH SET RETARDING PROPERTIES, THE TIME IT TAKES TO BE COMPACTED AND
CONSISTENCE OF THE CONCRETE. GENERALLY SPEAKING, THIS TIME SHALL BE TAKEN AS 2 Hr IN COLD
WEATHER AND 1 TO 1.5 Hr IN HOT WEATHER. TO AVOID COLD JOINTS, PLACING SHOULD BE RESUMED
BEFORE THE SURFACE HARDENS. FOR UNUSUALLY LONG DELAYS DURING CONCRETING, THE CONCRETE
SHOULD BE KEPT LIVE BY PERIODICALLY RE-VIBRATING IT. CONCRETE SHOULD BE VIBRATED AT
APPROXIMATELY 15-MINUTE INTERVALS OR LESS DEPENDING UPON JOB CONDITIONS. HOWEVER,
CONCRETE SHOULD NOT BE OVERVIBRATED TO THE POINT OF CAUSING SEGREGATION. FURTHERMORE,
SHOULD THE CONCRETE APPROACH TIME OF INITIAL SETTING, VIBRATION SHOULD BE DISCONTINUED
AND THE CONCRETE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO HARDEN WHERE A COLD JOINT WILL RESULT. COLD JOINT
SHALL BE AVOIDED TO THE POSSIBLE EXTENTE. IF, HOWEVER, A COLD JOINT IS FORMED DUE TO
UNAVOIDABLE REASONS, THE BELOW PROCEDURE SHALL BE ADOPTED IN TREATING COLD JOINTS

1. IF CONCRETE IS SO FRES THAT CAN BE REMOVED MANUALLY AND IF VIBRATORS CAN

PENETRATE THE SURFACE WITHOUT MUCH EFFORT, FRESH CONCRETE CAN BE PLACED
DIRECTLY AGAINST THE OLD SURFACE. THE OLD CONCRETE SHOULD BE COVERED BY FRESH
CONCRETE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE AND THE JOINT THOROUGHLY AND SYSTEMATICALLY
VIBRATED.
2. IF CONCRETE HAS HARDENED A BIT MORE THAN (1) BUT CAN STILL BE EASILY REMOVED BY A
LIGHT HAND PICK, THE SURFACE WILL BE RAKED AND WASHED THOROUGHLY SO THEAT THE
LOOSE CONCRETE, MORTAR COATINGS, OR OTHER CONTAMINANTS, IS REOVED
COMPLETELY WITHOUT DISTURBING THE REST OF THE CONCRETE IN DEPTH. A RICH MORTAR
LAYER 15 MM IN THICKNESS, IS PLACED ON THE DUMP SURFACE OF COLD JOINT, FRESH
CONCRETE IS THEN PLACED ON THE MORTAR LAYER AND THE JOINT IS THOROUGHLY AND
VIBRATED PENETRATING THE VIBRATOR DEEP INTO THE OLD LAYER OF CONCRETE.
3. IN CASE THE CONCRETE AT THE JOINT HAS BECOME SO STIFF THAT IT CANNOT BE REMOULDED
AND MORTAR OR SLURRY DOES NOT RISE INSPITE OF EXTENSIVE VIBRATION, THE JOINT SHALL
BE LEFT TO HARDEN FOR AT LEAST 12 24 HRS. IT IS THEN TREATED AS A REGULAR
CONSTRUCTION JOINT, AFTER CUTTING THE CONCRETE TO REQUIRED SHAPE AND PREPARING
THE SURFACE.
