Let b ∈ Z, then f (2b) = b. Therefore f is onto and hence has a right inverse.
Let’s find a right inverse. Since in the above argument we only need the first rule, namely x2 ,
to show onto, we probably only need to look there for the inverse. The inverse of the function
x
2 is 2x. So let g(x) = 2x. Let’s check that this is a right inverse of f . Let x ∈ Z.
2x
f ◦ g(x) = f (g(x)) = f (2x) = =x

8. (a) Prove that the set of onto mappings from A to A is closed under composition of mappings.
(b) Prove that the set of one-to-one mappings from A to A is closed under composition of
mappings.
10. Let f and g be mappings from A to A. Prove that if f ◦ g is invertible, then f is onto and g
is one-to-one.
g(a1) = g(a2)
h(f (g(a1))) = h(f (g(a2)))
h ◦ (f ◦ g)(a1) = h ◦ (f ◦ g)(a2)
a 1 = a2
Thus g is one-to-one.
