Introduction
 Terzaghi’s theory of one dimensional consolidation

u
 Rate of change of excess of pore pressure with time
t
C v  Coefficient of consolidation
 2u
 Rate of expulsion of pore water pressure with depth 'z'
z 2

Cv =
mv γw
k =Coefficient of permeability
mv =Coefficient of volumechange(or)Coefficient of volumecompressibility
Coefficient of Consolidation (contd.)

 It is the Factor governing the rate by which compression can

occur in a particular soil.
 When it is required to predict the time rate of settlement of soil
in the field, it is necessary to know the coefficient of
consolidation and the appropriate boundary conditions.
 Coefficient of consolidation can be determined by laboratory test
results. There are four methods to find the coefficient of
consolidation
Laboratory test methods
 Logarithm of time method

 Square root of time method

 Su’s maximum slope method

 Sivaram and Swamee’s computational method
