2001129903 15January 2018 Assigned: 11

END OF CHAPTER QUESTIONS:

1. What are the key elements of a research proposal?
The key elements of a research proposal are the conceptual framework (generating ideas for a research
project, limiting the scope, developing aims and objectives), theoretical framework (literature review) and
methodological framework (research methodology, population of the research and data collection methods).
2. What constitutes a viable research project?
For a research project to be viable, it must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and can be
accomplished within the study period set by the researcher.
3. Outline three research statements/questions for three viable research projects.
 Investigation and development of Mixed Oxide Solutions for the control of microbiological
fouling in seawater cooled condensers
 Utilization and characterization of Azolla fern (Azolla pinnata) as a carbon dioxide sequestrant
and biodiesel feedstock
 Evaluation of the antimicrobial properties of Mayana (Coleus blumei) extract.
4. Explain why these research projects are ‘viable’.
These studies have ample literature that are related to the research topics. They are also specific,
measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound.
5. Develop an aim and a series of objectives for each of the research projects.
a. To investigation and develop a suitable Mixed Oxide Solutions for the control of microbiological
fouling in seawater cooled condensers
b. To utilize and characterize of Azolla fern (Azolla pinnata) as a carbon dioxide sequestrant and
biodiesel feedstock
c. To evaluate the antimicrobial properties of Mayana (Coleus blumei) extract.

6. Propose a research methodology for each of the three research projects.

For these three research projects, the research methodology to be use is experimental design.

7. Explain why the proposed methodologies are appropriate.

Because these studies will involve experimentation wherein there are control group and
experimental group.

8. Explain what is meant by literature in the context of a research project.

Literature are researches that have already been carried out and published. Reviewing literature in
the context of a research project involves reading the literature relevant to the research project, and
critically evaluating it.

9. What is a theoretical framework in the context of a research project?

A theoretical framework, or literature review, contains a discussion, or review, of the literature in the area
of the research project. It provides theoretical scaffolding for the research project.

10. Which framework of the four frameworks approach to the research project provides direction for the
theoretical framework?
The conceptual framework

11. Develop and detail a search strategy for literature for the literature review for your research project.
From the working title, the researcher will source all of the literature, published research papers that are
related to the keywords and concepts of the research statement/question. Then the researcher identifies all
the relevant literature and save it in the folder.
