NGT SR components

The channel screen


Scanning

• If the radio is set up to listen (scan) a number of


channels automatically and there is no receive signal
detected, the screen will show that it is “Scanning”

• Note:
When the radio is not scanning, it is not
listening to other channels

Power key

• Press and hold the power key to turn on or off the


transceiver
– You may be prompted to enter a password at power on

Scroll and Volume keys

• Use the Scroll keys change channels and navigate up


and down menus
• Use the Volume keys to increase and decrease the
speaker audio volume

Tick and Cross keys

• Press to confirm a selection


• Press to exit selection or to delete a character in a
text field.
• Press and hold to exit to the channel screen

Search key

• Press once in the channel screen to search for a


channel name, twice to search for a frequency

MUTE key

• Press the MUTE key to toggle mute on or off


– When the mute is off ( V ), receive audio is heard on the
speaker continuously
– When the mute is on ( V ), receive audio is only heard
when a voice signal is detected by the receiver

CALL key

• Press the CALL key to start a call

SCAN key

• Press the SCAN key to either toggle scan on or off,


or to close a link (hangup) if you are in a call

Emergency key

• Hold the Emergency key to start an automatic


emergency call transmission, if programmed

Multi-function keys

• The numeric keypad of the NGT has secondary


functions called Hot keys

Tune and Mode


Advanced operators

• Press TUNE and then PTT to manually tune the


antenna

• Press MODE to toggle the mode (ie LSB or USB)

Clarifier
Advanced operators

• Press CLAR to set the clarifier


– The clarifier enables you to compensate for any
frequency offset between your transceiver and a remote
transceiver

Mute type
Advanced operators

• Press V/S to toggle the mute type between Selective


call mute (S), Voice mute (V) and ‘Voice’
– With mute on and Selective mute enabled, the
transceiver will only unmute if a call is made to your
station

Note:
- In new versions of firmware, V &S
toggles automatically
- Setting the mute to ‘Voice’ is
suited for voice only networks

Easitalk

• Press EASITALK to toggle audio noise reduction on


or off
• The Easitalk feature improves the quality of the
received audio signal in a noisy environment

View screen

• Press VIEW to toggle between the channel screen


and the address list
• The address list is not used in voice only networks
and will display as ‘empty’

Calls log

• Press CALL LOGS repeatedly to see details of


outgoing and incoming calls
• Not used in voice only networks and will display as
‘empty’

PTT functions

• Push-to-talk (PTT)

• More than just a transmit button


– Stop scanning
– Open mute PTT
– Cancel editing
– Erase popups
– Return to ‘Home’ screen

Main Menu and List Manager

• Press and hold to access the Main Menu


– The Main Menu contains lists of settings of the
transceiver
– You may need to login as an administrator to gain access

• Press and hold to access the List Manager


– The List Manager enables you to modify entries in a list
– You may need to login as an administrator to change
settings

Making Calls
Basic

• Press SCAN to stop scanning (if required)


• Use ∆ & ∇ to select a channel
• Listen to the receive audio and check no-one is talking. If
someone is, wait for them to finish or break in.
• Hold the microphone side-on and close to your mouth
• Hold down PTT
• Speak clearly at your normal volume and rate

Standard procedures
Why are they needed?

• Discipline is crucial to network efficiency

• Regulations require competent operators

• HF suffers from interference


– misunderstand messages

• Communication is half duplex


– communication in one direction at a time

• HF is a multiuser broadcast facility


– consideration of other user is not only polite but essential

Voice procedures

• When speaking, be conscious of your:


– Rhythm
– Speed
– Volume
– Pitch

• Use of pro-words ensures your message is


understood in poor communication conditions

• Use the phonetic alphabet when spelling out a word

Status LED

• The RF Unit and Junction Box have a Status LED


which indicates the unit’s state of health
• Green indicates it is powered and working correctly
