CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Project Context
Effective segregation of wastes means that less waste goes to landfill which
makes it cheaper and better for people and the environment. It is also important to
segregate for public health. In particular, hazardous wastes can cause long term health
problems, so it is very important that they are disposed of correctly and safely and not
mixed in with the normal waste coming out of your home or office. Besides the
environmental benefits of waste management, it is also beneficial to health as well. In the
past, burning waste in the landfill or in the backyard was a common practice. Removing
waste from public areas helps reduce risks to overall health, decreases exposure to
biohazards and reduces infestation of pest. There are causes why some individuals don’t
segregate their waste properly which is they are not aware of the hazards of mixing and
different waste cycles, thinking that this is not their responsibility to segregate the waste
and most of all, they don’t like to put their hands on wastes. Through this, it will give a
greater impact not just to health but also to the environment as well. Nowadays, the
school itself has an improper waste management in which some wastes are being mixed
in a particular trash can and it is one of the major problems encountered by garbage
collectors and maintenance workers.

About 35,580 tons of garbage is generated every day in the Philippines. On the
average, each person in the country produces about 0.5 kg and 0.3 kg of garbage every
day in the urban and rural areas, respectively. For Metro Manila, it is estimated that 8,636
tons of garbage is generated per day, i.e., 0.7 kg per person per day due to its more
modernized lifestyle. The household is the major source of waste in the Philippines at
74%. Moreover, of the total solid waste generated from households, 95% can still be
reused or recycled (43%), or turned into compost (52%). Only 5% is made up of residuals
(4%) and special/hazardous waste (1%) that are no longer usable or biodegradable. Only
40-85% of the waste generated is collected nationwide, implying that 15-60% is
improperly disposed of or littered. The maximum collection rate of 85% is recorded in
2
Metro Manila. The uncollected garbage is, unfortunately, burned or dumped anywhere
onto open areas, called open dumps, adding to the now polluted air shed and water body,
and global warming in the country(Castillo, Alicia L.).

Figure 1.2 Figure 1.3

With the above-mentioned, the proponents decided to create a project that will
help garbage collectors and maintenance workers when it comes to segregation in which
through that, they would be protected from various illnesses came from the waste
materials in whom they collected. This project can detect waste materials whether it is
metal or non-metal elements using Arduino Platform. This project is very useful in
making the environment free from mixed wastes and also to each individual in earning
discipline when it comes to throwing their garbage.

Purpose and Description

The aim of this project is to segregate garbage specifically metals and non-metals.
Furthermore, this is aimed to reduce improper waste disposal and to create an automatic
waste sorting system that will detect waste materials and will drop directly to the trash
can.

Objectives of the Project

General Objectives
This project mainly focuses on creating a system that will differentiate waste
objects according to their metallic properties.
Specific Objectives
Specifically, the project will develop a sorting system that will:
a) be able to differentiate waste materials in two specifications; metals and non-
metals
b) segregate wastes in designated containers
c) to prevent garbage from mixing together in a particular trash can.
d) keep the environment clean and pollution-free; and
e) eliminates the possibility of having greenhouse gases.

Scope and Limitations of the Project

Scope
 It has an ultrasonic sensor that can detect an object depending on its distance and
measurement and it has a servo motors that serves as a supporter for conveyor belt
so that an object can pass directly into its containers.
 Also, the servo motor serves as a directional door for some metal waste materials
in order to drop the object to its container.
Limitations
 Those sensors used in detecting objects are only for metals. Other than that (such
as non-metals), will pass thoroughly to its designated container through the
conveyor belt.
Significance of the Study
The waste (metal and non-metal) sorting system will be very helpful not only to
the garbage collectors but also to each individual including students/teachers, school,
government and also it gives much value to the environment.
The application will be beneficial to the following:

Garbage Collectors/Maintenance Staff- with the help of this project, they will no
longer separate wastes manually in which they will get various illnesses in using bare
hands.

Students/Teachers- with this project, they will earn discipline and they will be educated
through the proper ways of garbage disposal. They can also give a greater contribution to
the environment.

School- they will guarantee improvement when it comes to their waste management and
also when it comes to the health risk that they get from holding garbage container lids.

Government- through this project, instead of spending people’s taxes from large garbage
containers outside that may affects the health of majority through touching the lids, the
container will be modernized in which it will be using sensors and conveyers in detecting
and putting garbage in designated containers.

Environment- it is very useful and efficient especially in making the surroundings clean
and free from greenhouse gases in which it will affects the ozone layer.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

Theoretical Background

Waste mismanagement has serious environmental effects making the passage of

the Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 a
landmark environmental legislation in the Philippines. The law was crafted in response to
the looming garbage problems in the country. RA 9003 declares the policy of the state in
adopting a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste management program
that ensures the protection of public health and the environment and the proper
segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste through
the formulation and adoption of best environmental practices. Moreover, it illustrates the
potentials and benefits of recycling not only in addressing waste management problems
but also in alleviating poverty.

RA 9003 was passed by the Philippine Congress on December 20, 2000 and was
subsequently approved by the Office of the President on January 26, 2001. It contains
seven (7) chapters sub-divided into 66 sections setting out policy direction for an
effective solid waste management program in the country.

Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000

RA 9003 describes solid waste management as a discipline associated with the

control of generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing, and disposal
of solid wastes. The manner by which these activities are conducted shall be in accord
with the best principles of public health, economics, engineering, conservation,
aesthetics, other environmental considerations, and public attitudes. The Act provides for
a comprehensive ecological solid waste management program by creating the necessary
institutional mechanisms and incentives, appropriating funds, declaring certain acts
prohibited, and providing penalties.

3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)

The Environmental Protection Agency has determined a three-tiered approach for

managing solid waste. Each of these should be practiced to reduce the amount material
headed for final disposal. They are in order of importance: REDUCE, the best way to
manage solid waste. Don't create waste in the first place! Buy only what you need. Use
all that you buy. Avoid heavily packaged products. Avoid disposable items like paper
plates and plastic silverware. Buy the largest size package for those items that you use are
often. REUSE, the better way to manage solid waste. Reuse items use them over and
over until they are completely worn out. RECYCLE, the good way to manage solid
waste. Recycle means taking something old and making it into something new. In
Seminole County, all residents who live in a single-family home can recycle right in front
of their house. Those residents who live in apartments or condominiums can drop off
their recyclables at several different locations. Old newspapers, #1 and #2 plastic bottles,
green, clear and brown glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans can all be recycled
at the curb. Simply rinse out containers and remove lids. That's it; it's very simple and
very worthwhile. Not only does it keep items out of the landfill, recycling conserves
natural resources (Seminole County Government, 2012). 3R Recycler’s Environmental
Quality, Health and Safety Policy has steps in place for conducting operations, quality of
services & products, health & safety of its employees, clients, visitors & vendors and to
protect environment. This is always being communicated to all our employees, clients,
visitors & vendors at all our establishments and every location must provide evidence of
the implementation of the Policy.

Automated Waste Segregator using Arduino

Figure 2.0 Automated Waste Segregator

The automated waste segregator exactly fits at the source itself. The authorities in each
city such as BBMP in Bangalore will collect the segregated wastes in separate containers
and disposes the waste accordingly. Dry waste is recycled and reused. Wet waste is
turned into compost and can be used to generate biogas. Connect the Arduino board to
PC by using cable. Open the Arduino IDE software, take a new file and type a program
then verify/compile the code. After code compilation, go to Tools select Port:
“Arduino/Genuino Uno” in that selects “Arduino Genuino Uno”. After that again go to
tools select “Port: “COM4 (Arduino/Genuino Uno)”. In the next step we are going to
upload the program to our Arduino board. Once code is uploaded, we get done uploading
command.

If the garbage bin is filled or not that should be also check easily in PC even also in
android mobile phone with the help of Bluetooth SPP pro app for that reason HC-05
module is connected to Arduino Uno board.

Automatic Waste Segregator has been successfully implemented for the segregation of
waste into metallic, dry and wet waste at a domestic level. The system can segregate only
one type of waste at a time with an assigned priority for metal, wet, dry and glass waste.
The experiment has been conducted for wet, dry, glass and metallic wastes. It is found

6
that the change of capacitive count value is greater for wet waste and very less for dry
waste. Other objects like glass and wood have intermediate relative dielectric constant
and thus are detected as dry waste. Experimental result shows that the waste has been
successfully segregated into glass, metallic, wet and dry using the Automatic Waste
Segregator.

Smart Garbage Monitoring System using Arduino 101

Figure 2.1 Smart Garbage Monitoring System

The idea struck us when we observed that the garbage truck use to go around the
town to collect solid waste twice a day. Although this system was thorough it was very
inefficient. For example, let's say street A is a busy street and we see that the garbage fills
up really fast whereas maybe street B even after two days the bin isn't even half full. This
example is something that actually happens thus it leads us to the ''Eureka'' moment!

What our system does is it gives a real time indicator of the garbage level in a
trashcan at any given time. Using that data, we can then optimize waste collection routes
and ultimately reduce fuel consumption. It allows trash collectors to plan their
daily/weekly pick up schedule.

The basic Model works like this:

To start with you will first have to enter the height of the dustbin. This will help us
generate the percentage of trash in the trashcan. We then have two criteria which needs to
be satisfied to show that the particular bin needs to be emptied:
 The amounts of trash, in other words, let’s say if your bin is half full you don't really
need to empty it. Our thresh, or maximum amount that we permit of trash is 75% of the
bin. (You could alter the thresh according to your preference.).
 If supposing a particular trashcan fills up 20% and then for a week doesn't change, it
comes into our second criteria, time. With time even the little amount will start rotting
leading to a smelly surrounding. To avoid that our tolerance level is 2 days, so if a
trashcan is less than 75% but it is two days old it then will also need to be emptied.

Smart Dustbin using Arduino, Ultrasonic Sensor & Servo Motor

Figure 2.2 Smart Dustbin

The main concept behind the Smart Dustbin using Arduino project is Object
Detection. I have already used Ultrasonic Sensor in Object Avoiding Robot, where upon
detecting an object, the Robot will change its course of direction.

A similar methodology is implemented here, where the Ultrasonic Sensor is

placed on top of the dustbin’s lid and when the sensor detects any object like a human
hand, it will trigger Arduino to open the lid.

After setting up the Smart Dustbin and making all the necessary connections,
upload the code to Arduino and provide 5V power supply to the circuit. Once the system
is powered on, Arduino keeps monitoring for any object near the Ultrasonic Sensor.
If the Ultrasonic Sensor detects any object like a hand for example, Arduino
calculates its distance and if it less than a certain predefined value, Arduino will activate
the Servo Motor and with the support of the extended arm, it will list the lid open, After
certain time, the lid is automatically closed.

CHAPTER III

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Technicality of the Project

Waste management is one of the toughest processes in the current trend. Waste
management can be done based on particular products. The waste disposal consists of
metals, non- metal. Metal is one of the most important components in all fields of
industries. The metal must be first segregated in order to recycle the waste metals. The
segregated metal is further getting sorted and the scrapped metal must then process in
order to be reused. The exact reusing of metal is how it was previously used, and what it
will be used for the next purpose. In this paper, waste metal is segregated using a hopper
system. The waste metal will be coming from the hopper into the sensing area in which
the metal gets sensed with the help of the metal sensor. The waste disposal like dry
metals, wet metals from the rural as well as urban area is get collected in a separate area
by which the waste gets managed. This is done with the help of simple collectors which
is used to segregate the dry metals as well as wet metals using Programmable Logic
Controllers (PLC).

HARDWARE USES
Inductive Proximity Sensor Are used for non-contact detection of
metallic objects. Their operating principle
is based on a coil and oscillator that creates
an electromagnetic field in the close
surroundings of the sensing surface.
Servo Motor Is a small and effective motor and it can be
used in some serious applications like
precise position control. The controlling of
this motor can be done with a PWM (pulse
width modulator) signal.
Breadboard An electronics breadboard (as opposed to
the type on which sandwiches are made) is
actually referring to a solderless
breadboard. These are great units for
making temporary circuits and prototyping,
and they require absolutely no soldering.
Pin Headers Are often associated with ribbon cable
connectors, pin headers often also function
as recipients for jumpers. The most
common jumper spacing is 2.54 millimetres
(0.1 in), though 2.0 millimetres (0.079 in)
is sometimes used in smaller products.
Ultrasonic Sensor Are used around the world, indoors and
outdoors in the harshest conditions, for a
variety of applications. Our ultrasonic
sensors, made with piezoelectric
crystals, use high frequency sound waves
to resonate a desired frequency and convert
electric energy into acoustic energy, and
vice versa.
Infrared Lights A light-emitting diode is a two-lead
semiconductor light source. It is a p–n
junction diode that emits light when
activated. When a suitable current is
applied to the leads, electrons are able to
recombine with electron holes within the
device, releasing energy in the form of
photons.

METHODOLOGY

Operational Feasibility

To check the operational feasibility of the system, a fishbone diagram employing

the 5M is presented in the Figure 4.1. The sorting system is expected to be operational as
the methods, machinery, management, manpower and materials require only the basic
requirements.

• Whether the required technology is available or not

• Whether the required resources are available: programmers, testers, documenter,

software, and hardware.

Availability of resources deals not only with the manpower but also includes the
software and hardware to be used for the system to work.
